As part of our journey to beat all 128 games from the 2015 Best Game Ever GameFAQs Contest, we had to conquer World of Warcraft. As none of us had played the game before, we asked for your advice on a win objective, and eventually settled to beating all non Legion dungeons/raids (Justification: Legion was not released at the time of the GameFAQs contest). I am happy to report that last night this win objective was met and the game has officially been beaten, bringing us to 63/128 games completed. The second tab on our spreadsheet has the list of dungeons and raids that were beaten (the first tab is the list of games we've beaten and some other stats):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_SKvnMZTbqzkwbA1fEUfJ3ITIVLm3sZY_Gb62Tizamk/edit#gid=0

Notable highlights of our journey:

- getting invited to a guild and becoming professional role players in a non-rp guild, to the point where they created discord channels for us
- role playing with the community while trying to find the outlands (I made a youtube video of some of the highlights:
)
- doing our first dungeon was a really fun experience
- doing some of the dungeons/raids that are references to wc3 levels.
- during a dungeon, having our tank stop and tell the group "brambleblast doesn't do enough dps, i'm not tanking for him" and go afk. (we had to kick him and wait for another tank to join to proceed)

As a kid I could never get past that final hallway. For whatever reason I never used special weapons and thought I had to kill everything. It wasn't until I was a college student that I went back and beat it (with lots of scrolls and abusing NES screen mechanics). The difficulty spike at that part is unreal.

To clarify some win objectives for other games:

We are playing games in one of three ways.

A "blind" playthrough means the person (or people) playing has never played the game before and is playing without any help from guides or advice from other players. Usually we attach a minimum win condition to this.

A "semi blind" playthrough means the person knows a little about the game, either from having played some (but not all) of the game or watched someone else play parts of the game. They can't look up any additional info while playing though. We adjust the win condition based on how much the player knows about the game.

A "not blind" playthrough means the person has played and beaten the game before. In this case we try to have the person do a harder objective (e.g. unlock all cheats in goldeneye) or 100% the game. Usually we try to shuffle who plays the games around to minimize these but for a lot of games all three of us have played them before, so it can't be helped.

As some of you may know, a couple of my friends and I have been working on (slowly) beating all 128 games from the 2015 GameFAQS contest. If you're curious, you can view our progress here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_SKvnMZTbqzkwbA1fEUfJ3ITIVLm3sZY_Gb62Tizamk

Soon we will be starting World of Warcraft. We were thinking we can just beat all these dungeons to beat the game: http://vanilla-wow.wikia.com/wiki/Instances_by_level

Can any wow experts chime in on this? Does this seem ok for a win condition for a game that you can't truly "beat"?

Well if you assume there's going to be 20000 total votes and that the people voting now are representative of the entire day, you need

*calculates*

about ~1550 votes to be 90% confident that the current results are within 2% of their final total. Since they are further than that apart you can call the match now with about 90% confidence.

95% confidence will come around ~2100 votes and 99% confidence will come around 3500.

There appears to be enough evidence gathered over the years that they often work well; the more interesting question is why they work well.

Presumably they rely on some sort of independence assumption somewhere in the derivation. It would not surprise me if they work well when voters' ranking hierarchy is "reasonably independent" with respect to each other and work poorly otherwise (as would be the case in an overlapping fanbase). That they would be mostly independent is a curiosity in of itself.

TopicSome potential "quality of life" match picture additions
LordOfDabu
05/02/17 4:50:04 PM

Hey @SBAllen

I think the rotating pictures are a cool addition and a nice way to modernize the contest. I was wondering if it would be difficult to make any of the following "quality of life" additions

-Having the "mouse over" text be the list of notable games/systems from the bracket submission page (the ones from the question marks in https://www.gamefaqs.com/features/byg_vote ), so that voters can see other games (and console releases!) than just the few from the pictures

-Keeping the year somewhere on the pictures besides the first one

-Perhaps having the time between picture rotations shortened, so that visitors will know it's an animated picture

I think these would not be difficult to implement but would increase the quality of the pictures! I know you can't ever please everyone but I think these are pretty noncontroversial. Thanks for what looks like an exciting contest and for securing so much potential prize money.

Two bugs that are planned to be patched are goons getting stuck and the valkyrie sprite bug where if enough valkyries were present on the screen, they would stop shooting because of the sprite limitation bug.

So how does this work if SCR can play with BW? Wouldn't they still be broken in BW, unless they're somehow fixing them in BW too?

Other than that question, the fact that this can literally connect with the original game is crazy and amazing.

They are fixing them in patch 1.18 which comes out next week.

Brood War and the original will be free starting from then, too. :3
