Who will win the 2021 World Luigi Championships?

It's been ten years since the critically claimed 2011 World Mario Championships. This topic is to inform you of your opportunity to witness one of the greatest video competitions of the 21st century. On Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 9 PM EST, the world's four greatest Mario players of all time will be returning in a head-to-head duel--winner takes all. Since all four competitors have perfected their Mario skills, this year there's a new twist: All four will now be playing as Luigi. The four champions will be streaming their play live via Twitch, and expert commentary will be provided by our resident Mario & Luigi analysts.

The competition itself is straightforward enough: the four champions will each play Luigi's Stardust Adventure, a modified version of Super Mario World, for three hours beginning at 9 PM EST. Having just been released, none of the competitors have played this modified version before. Whichever player has advanced farthest in the game at the end of three hours will be declared the champion. Should a player at any time actually finish the entire game, they will be immediately declared the winner and the competition will end.

This year, the stakes have been raised all the way to the moon: an anonymous donor has donated a $1,500,000 purse for the event, with the lion's share ($1,000,000) being awarded for 1st place. The event is not without risk however, as the last place competitor has agreed to pay $50,000 to each of the other players. There are whispers that one of the players may be over leveraged and could be playing for more than fame and glory.

Here's a little information about each of the champions:

LordOfDabu: Dabu is a legend in the GameFAQs community, having contributed much to the site both as a moderator and a content contributor. As the only senior citizen participating in this competition, now deep in the twilight of his life, he has enormous experience in the world of Mario, though it's not clear how well this will translate to playing as Luigi. He will surely draw on his extensive knowledge of all video games as he attempts to prove that he's still got it. Having recently won a Fields Medal for his work in symbolic manipulation, Dabu is looking to prove that his 6 pound brain has even more to offer to humanity than just mathematics. It's worth noting that while Dabu took first place in the 2010 and 2011 World Mario Championships, they were not without controversy, and the referees will no doubt be taking a very close look at his gameplay this time around for irregularities.

Main strengths: Fast level clearing, game sense
Main weaknesses: Old age, overreliance on powerups, arrogance
Notable wins: 2x Gold Medal in both the 2010 and 2011 World Mario Championship

SSJ4Sonic: Sonic has proven himself time again in various Starcraft competitions, most notably in the 2003 Olympus OGN Starleague where he narrowly finished out of the top four. He's widely renowned for his Renaissance Man approach to gaming - whether it's an RTS, and FPS, a PTQ, or even a PYS, you can bet that Sonic will know all the angles within minutes (and have the stones to play one). It should also be noted that while he's an accomplished gamer, his talents don't end there - he was once a semifinalist on Jeopardy, and several of his nieces and nephews have gone on record saying of Sonic, "He's not my favorite uncle, but he's definitely top 7." However, with fame comes downsides, as he can't even go to his favorite Korean BBQ place without being swarmed by adoring fans. Though he hasn't received the same hype as Dabu, one would have to be a fool to count Sonic out. Tens of thousands of fans are expecting Sonic to avenge his defeat in the 2010 World Mario Championships, where he was (allegedly) swindled by LordOfDabu after leading for most of the match.

Main strengths: Platformers without gimmicks, averages 500 Mario-APM
Main weaknesses: Ghosts houses, sometimes tilts, Roy Koopa
Notable wins: Silver Medal in the 2010 World Mario Championship

GoShox1998: Shox has proven time and again that age is only a number. The only adolescent/millenial of our four champions, Shox's deeds have been well documented on teamliquid ever since his debut in 2005 as a 7 year old Starcraft prodigy. After a rough bout with adderall addiction after attempting to go pro and flaring, Shox has graduated from multiple 12-step programs and is determined to show us that his past is the past, and the future contains nothing but two heaping scoops of Shox. His recent accomplishments include setting multiple world records speedrunning games you've never heard of, winning the 2018 character battle, beating the world's best 128 games in 256 days, and being kicked from team ash for being a person of upstanding moral character. Rumor even has that he finally moved away from his parent's house and is living on his own for the first time. A recent poll even showed that the average Mario fan believes Shox is the most underrated Mario player of all time. When asked for his comment on his chances on the upcoming competition, Shox replied, his spiky golden hair crackling with power, "I am the storm after the calm." Will 2021 be the year of Shox?

Main strengths: S-tier Coin Macro, world's best jumping mechanics and timing
Main weaknesses: Dealing with lag, ice levels, has a tendency to YOLO on his last man
Notable wins: Bronze Medal in the 2011 World Mario Championship

Goose: Our final champion is a goose. Lacking opposable thumbs, higher-order thinking, and mammalian heritage, our resident experts had all but ruled him out as a serious competitor. He surprised everyone with a second plac
