I think I got good mileage out of arguing Yu Narukami (and Rikku to a lesser extent) as a devoted healing/buff bot in mercs draft edition even in small matches. I think it's doable people just try to force the argument on poor terrains for it out of desperation

As someone who scoffed at it when I got it two ROPs ago and now uses Lulu as a core in his Ice teams it's very good. That instant cast 2 helps more than you expect for damage output. It's not as good as the Tidus style IC1 + chase but it helps a lot.

I'm not denying your opponent would need to suck (item drops can also make this one happen on every stage with the bob ombs and such). That it's theoretically possible at all is a problem to me though. It's a symptom there's not enough focus on player vs player for my tastes to be a true fighter and that it's something a bit different that happens to involve players attacking each other.

It's mostly how the match gameplay and victory conditions are structured

For me to be a true fighting game, the focus needs to be 100% on the battle with no gameplay or momentum shifts influenced entirely by factors outside of control of the players under standard conditions.

Smash stops being a fighting game with the platforming elements for me. There are many stages where a player can win by taking no offensive action against the opponent. Like if tourneycrab Smash (no items final destination) was the only way to play it I'd actually agree it's a fighter.

On the other hand, wrestling games stop being a fighter because of all the weird ass gimmick matches available, strange things you can do during matches like call in interference, smack the ref and get disqualified, etc etc.

I can't decisively say anyone would be reliable. I couldn't even say Dante or Newbie would be had they been expected to do more. In that sense Tiro/numbers may have got a bit of a raw deal as while they flaked hard they started off doing more. It's easy to be reliable when you have to do relatively less. That being said rulings can be fairly exhausting, so I don't mean to downplay that contribution either. To actually put thought into how things interact, it's more effort than you'd think. Hopefully cleaning up the game a bit will help with that.

Really Drak should be #3 now that I think about it. He helped with income pretty often with no real prodding from me. Probably just took pity on my poor soul. Think he technically helped less with rulings as IIRC I wasn't desperate enough to solicit him as an official voter till late but yeah.

Reliability rankings probably go:

1. Me
2. Luis (pretty much okay for everything other than game balance and rulings. Only guy I would consider a decent total package admin out of the group.)
3. Dante/meisnewbie/Drakeryn (they were pretty responsive and helpful, but had small workloads in general and were basically just ruling assistant monkeys. But they were good at that, and 2/3 of them weren't actually technically admins, so I mean, no complaints here)
4. HGR (completely reliable until he lost interest, but at least there was no ambiguity there when he lost interest. knowing you can't depend on someone to do anything whatsoever is useful in a way. Also was upfront before the game started that this would likely happen so yeah, no real hostility here)
5. numbers (like HGR with a bit of a longer attention span. beat around the bush more about whether he would help with anything. also randomly "helped" with things in a destructive way)
6. Tirofog (total flake after week 10 or so and an object of hatred eternal for a reason. Overall contributed more than over half this list but we're talking reliability here not contributions)

So I mean, yeah, Dante was more than good at delivering what he committed to.
