The hell?

If people are chanting it in a segment he isn't in it's by definition a "CM Punk" thing, the whole point is that people chant for other random stuff when they're bored. You can write off literally any example of it by just saying "oh the audience just chanted it because they were bored/trolling/confused/whatever"

Not to mention it's kind of weird to not count segments with English in it when your point is that people don't really like him or respond to him. People chanting Rusev Day when he's around would seem to suggest they associate him with it positively!

A big part I'm not sure but I don't think he's helping. Like I think the time spent on his intros doing literally anything else Rusev related would be more effective.

Uh, no. This reads like someone who started liking wrestling like 8 years ago on that Raw after Wrestlemania where it became a fad to chant random stuff. People can chant for stuff because they really like that stuff and want to see it. Rusev was getting those for a while. People were chanting Rusev Day in segments that weren't bad, just because they wanted to see the guy. WCW used to get "Goldberg" chants in segments he wasn't in and it wasn't because they were shitting on the segment. The Rusev Day chants at ROH shows weren't during segments that people were crapping on-- they generally don't do that over there like WWE does, honestly.

I am a stupid, ignorant newbie to this pro wrestling thing and was not aware that back in the day when it was good, people did not ever cheer for things they liked when they saw them, preferring to chant for their favourite breakfast cereal instead. I am glad you have educated me on this issue.

Segments that people are really keen on don't get ignored in favour of other stuff. People might not necessarily hate what they're watching, but they definitely don't like it as much as whatever it is they're chanting for. But the difference between "hate this, let's cheer for someone else" and "this is okay but someone else is better" is completely non-existent to anyone not actually thinking it to themselves while chanting that night, so to an outside observer you can write off literally any example of people cheering for other stuff as a "CM Punk thing" if you want

You can tell by the feel of the segment. The big signal is how dead the crowd is before the chants kick up. You typically get a CM Punk styled burial chant when it's a segment people actively don't want to see. A Goldberg chant is more out of passion for Goldberg while a CM Punk chant is more to bury the segment. I mean JBL gets chants in that same context, are we going to argue now that JBL is mega over too? Maybe if you'd watched wrestling before 2010 you would know he is in fact not that over.

But then you turn around and argue that you can't count "Rusev Day" chants in favor of Rusev being over if Aiden is on the screen, since he causes them

Hell, Eddv was a big one in the corner of saying neither Rollins nor Ziggler should be anywhere near a main event! Most people just said the latter.

I still do think that.

Rollins is basically Ziggler, just 3-4 years back on the timeline.

A solid hand but lets be real the man is a coat rack re hashing his only successful gimmick for a third time.

People are associating him with it. English makes them think of Rusev Day which makes them chant Rusev Day.

Positively is a leap, though. I mean if we had Virgil Wrestling SUPERSTAR accompany Rusev to the ring a bunch of times I think he would start getting them when he appeared on screen too, similarly to how Lana gets them.

Like you're actually arguing two different things here. There is no doubt being associated with Rusev Day is helping Aiden English. Getting Rusev Day chants is better than the literally nothing he would have without it, and I do think many people do legit like him, don't get me wrong. The question is how much is he helping Rusev. And I would argue he's actually hurting Rusev slightly overall.

I suppose if you look at things from a utilitarian perspective it's still good to include him in the act because he's being elevated so much from being there and the amount of damage he's doing to Rusev is debatable at best, but yeah. If he was a selling point he'd get more reaction in his singles matches-- hell I think the teased break-up would've got more reaction too, something more violent ala the Becky Lynch backlash, instead of everyone sorta just being just disappointed about it.

To be completely fair, I think people were disappointed by it because it was done in the most uninteresting way possible

Lana lost matches like she always does, Rusev lost matches like he always does, except this time Aiden was somewhat but not really at fault and you'd occasionally have Rusev go "Stay backstage" but then never even actually get mad or anything and it was just a mess. Like, there wasn't even any tension other than one segment of Lana and Aiden arguing.

WWE seemed to be ending Rusev Day with as much of a whimper as they possibly could

Also, it's neither here nor there, but I'm watching Aiden vs. Almas and the crowd definitely is cheering for him during the singing/pre-match stuff. ..The match itself is hard to tell because literally 3/4ths of it happened during a commercial break and then he loses in like thirty seconds when it comes back but yeah
