Personally, I just can't do fighting games, the combos, the moves, the timing, everything, i've just never been very good at it, i usually learn one move and then do it over and over and die most of the time. The one exception to the rule being Street Fighter 2 on SNES. I rocked that.

Now i've always been interested in Smash Brothers just because <3 Nintendo. But its still the same thing, with button smashing and combos and timing.

In the case of Smash Brothers, is it's popularity because of Nintendo Characters or because its a great fighting game and there is a massive love for the genre?

Its a party game that draws a lot from fighting games, but its nature as a competitive platformer hybrid makes it distinct in the eyes of most the FGC.

I don't really like fighting games much, either. And I tired of Smash as well.

Smash is a hybrid fighting game no matter how you look at it. The primary goal is to beat the other guy up. It's just done in a very different way, drawing inspiration from several other genres, hence it's a "hybrid" that's a fighter first, a platformer second, and a whatever-genre-those-items-make-it third. But that's why it had more appeal to me than Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken, or Soul Calibur.

in my humble opinion, fighting games are fun if you can find someone of equal skill to play against

i've had a lot of fun with recent mortal kombat, injustice and street fighter games with one friend in particular. we'll both be terrible and gradually get better at similar rates

i think a great fighting game should be fun even when both players are at a pretty low skill level, which is where some otherwise good titles kind of trip up

and to answer the poll more directly, the reason it's fun to play against one person in particular is the mind games, rock paper scissors situations, and trying out new random techniques to see how they fit in

they have so many 'aha!' moments, so many instants where you shout in joy or frustration, and then you can immediately get back up and make up for it

Smash is definitely not a fighting game. If you want to label it a fighting game thats fine, but then Im distinguishing between traditional fighters and party platform fighters. At that point its just semantics of wording, but it definitely isnt in the same category as street fighter, etc.

Well controllers have gotten more complicated thus combos can be more complicated.

I was watching my daughter play Super Mario World on SNES and she was having a hell of a time and i realized that i was starting her on too many buttons. I ran out and got the NES Classic, she is doing so much better on SMB3, 2 buttons. Sure she dies, frequently, but she's enjoy it more.

And i'm willing to bet that no matter how good i thought i was 25 years ago at SF2, i was probably never good.

Well most modern fighters the number of attack buttons has remained largely the same. SNES has 6 buttons. Most fighting games don't really use more than 6.

I mean don't get me wrong they are a little more complex I just think a more of that feeling boils down to perception. Watching something like Marvel 3 is super intimidating because you've got 100 hit combos and crap. But if you play it yourself you know there's a lot of fluff there and a standard 4 button sequence followed by a jump and mashing can easily get you to like 20 hits.

I haven't played it but I've heard the single player on SFV was very poorly handled much like many parts of the game so I might be inclined to put that on the AI being bungled to be newbie unfriendly than the game fundamentally having a particularly harsh learning curve

Mandatory "Smash Bros. is a fighting game" post. Yeah, it's definitely not in the same category as more traditional fighters, but you literally have to beat your opponent up just as every other fighter out there.

Even though fighting games aren't in my favorite genre, I like it when they have a great balance of skill + randomness factor. I may not like Mortal Kombat for its gory thematic, but I think it's pretty neat that you have a specific set of inputs you can make to land a successful combo, so that way you can land some random kick or punch and then BAM, land a 5 hit combo; it requires simple memorization which you can master easily; it's not as stiff as Street Fighter where you can barely do 3 hit combos, but not as exaggerated as Marvel vs. Capcom where you can do 20+ hit combos but at the cost of needing to think fast to keep it going. My favorite thing about traditional 2D fighters is probably Super Arts/Special Moves, though. I normally attack just to fill my power bar in order to do nice, flashy, super damage-dealing attacks.

But nothing beats Smash in my book, because of how versatile that game is, and how downright hilariously chaotic a match can be. The possibilities are nearly endless with that game, so you are constantly experiencing something new, and you can make it as reliable on skill as you want, given the variety of play modes, items and stage gimmicks.

I guess traditional wrestling games could be considered a variant of 3D fighter, yeah. But Smash Bros specifically has a lot of 2D fighter elements. Each character has their own moveset of normals, specials, and throws (which bypass guard). It's all about positioning and selecting the right moves to use in each situation, in fast real-time, so that you hit and don't get hit.

Ange hit most of what I would say. Fighting games are great for strategy and mind games, but in real-time. There are consequences to the actions you take, good and bad. It's never been about doing more moves faster, but doing the correct moves at the correct times.
