Season 4 of Frasier is in the books! That was a really good season.

although I'm not one of those people who can remember what happened in which season so I can't really rank what I've seen so far

it's always been bizarre to me when people can rank the seasons of TV shows because I guess I don't compartmentalize that way

Oh, FFXV definitely has problems. They just weren't enough to offset all the things I really enjoyed about it. Like, none of those things you mentioned are more than minor annoyances to me.

I don't think FFXV skimped on the gameplay though (and you seem to be conflating good gameplay with difficulty here)! If you want challenges, the game has them in some of the optional dungeons and hunts. I don't necessarily think the main story in an RPG needs them to be good though.

Well, I'll probably go for a lot of the optional conversations and whatnot with mass evidence/profile presenting since that's just how I like to play, but I'll just cut back on going for all the wrong answer dialogue. It's having to spam saves and restart so much because you get game overs that's the pain (although that wouldn't be a problem for DD and SoJ since you can instantly reset to where it went wrong).

of course that means E1-4 will have an unfair advantage...!

Edgeworth/Franziska had almost 63% of the total dialogue, and Franziska had twice as much as the three below her. So yeah, playable characters and assistants are going to slaughter this thing. I'm curious to see how the distribution changes for the mainline games. We're going to have three trial-only cases before we hit the first full-length case though.

I've been trying to count the dialogue if it's unique (and it often is outside of the OT and AJ), but sometimes there are multiple penalty dialogues and you get them at random, so I can't tell if I've gotten them all or not. It also means I have to restart a ton because the gauge either runs out or gets really low.

also I forgot that the AAI games have unique dialogue for game overs depending on when you lose so that's even more stuff I have to figure out if I want to do or not

There's more than one way to build intensity in a boss fight. You can make even a relatively easy fight intense with the appropriate atmosphere, such as the aforementioned Leviathan fight in FFXV. A boss fight doesn't have to be hard to be satisfying.

61. Mega Man 2 (LOLIAmAnAlt)
qAdJvw5

This is my favorite Mega Man Classic game. It introduced some series staples, like Robot Master rematches, Wily Castles, and energy tanks. It probably has the best soundtrack of the Classic games, too. As I've said in the other Mega Man writeups, my barometer for measuring good Mega Man games is based on Robot Masters and their powers. Other than Mega Man 1 and the original Mega Man X (who have the advantage because they came first), Mega Man 2 probably has the most memorable lineup in the series. Wood Man is probably the weak link both as a boss and for the power he gives (I've never been a big fan of the "shield" powers), but even he's pretty decent because he has a funny design. Of course, in terms of powers, the Metal Blade is legendary. Multiple bosses are weak to it, including Metal Man himself, and you can shoot four of them for every bar on the gauge, which is ridiculous. Since ammo pickups are fairly frequent, you can essentially use it with reckless abandon as a substitute Mega Buster. Other personal favorites for me include the Time Stopper, the Quick Boomerang, and the Crash Bomber. I've said I don't remember the stages very often, but I do recall one particular segment of Quick Man's stage with the horizontal bars of instant death, which is the main reason I love the Time Stopper.

I also have a weird anecdote relating to Mega Man 2. When I was in 4th grade, our teacher kept a collection of books in her room that we could borrow, and among them was a Mega Man 2 novelization. I decided to borrow it, but I forgot to return it before summer break. When we came back the next year, I found out she had retired, so I just kept it. I don't think I still have it though, unless it's packed away in my mom's attic or something. I think it actually stayed true to the game in terms of Robot Master weaknesses and stuff like that, although it had this weird twist where Dr. Light tried to clone Mega Man as a failsafe but accidentally turned him human instead, which is used to explain Bad Boxart Mega Man who looks like a human instead of a robot (since the MM2 boxart is used as the cover for the book). Not long ago, I decided to try to look it up to see if I could find the book or find any info about the book, and I discovered that the Angry Video Game Nerd actually did a video on it where he reads the whole book (which only takes an hour and 15 minutes since it's a kid's book). I doubt anyone actually wants to see/hear it, but here's the link anyway!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Mega Man Classic game?

Read the latest ReLIFE chapter. I have a good idea where this is going. I'm just curious about how much longer it's going to take to get there, especially since that 4-episode finale is supposed to come out next month, and I assume they're going to have the same ending, so you wouldn't want the anime to spoil the ending of the manga.

oh wow that's next month now

and after looking it up, it seems the manga is going to end literally right before those OVAs come out, which makes sense

62. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Raka_Putra)
miTcwyI

About a year ago, I watched the original trailer they released when this game was first announced, and it's kinda crazy how different it was from the finished product. It was a lot darker and presented Phoenix and Layton as actual rivals who don't see eye to eye (which the "versus" implies) instead of being friendly partners like they were in the actual game. Part of me wonders if that would've been better than what we got, although the ending probably still would've gone off the deep end. This is half a Professor Layton game, after all, so it probably wouldn't have fixed one of the game's bigger problems. I hadn't played a Layton game before this though, so I didn't totally understand what I was getting into the first time around! Regardless, I had a good time getting introduced to the world of Professor Layton through the lens of Ace Attorney.

I really enjoyed the premise and the setting of this game. Team Layton and Team Ace Attorney are both transported into a medieval world where witches are feared above all else and a man known as the Storyteller has the power to turn anything he writes into reality, or so it seems. As I said in the Unwound Future writeup, nothing is ever as it seems in a Layton game! However, like I said, this was my introduction to the series, and Ace Attorney does have some supernatural elements to it, so I didn't know what to expect from the story. The court segments are pretty wild though, as you might expect from a literal witch trial. You have multiple witnesses testifying at once and changing their testimony on the fly, a gallery that's more like an angry mob than anything else, and convicted witches being sent to the flames as soon as the trial ends. The game does a great job on selling the fact that this is a totally different world than the characters are used to, and that the deck is completely stacked against them, which makes their repeated victories all the more impressive.

Most of the cases are decent but not great, but the environment and atmosphere are strong enough to keep you invested, as I said. However, the game's best case is excellent, and I'd argue that it's a borderline top ten contender for the entire Ace Attorney series. It has a really solid cast of characters, a few unexpected and well done twists, and an ending that tugs at your heartstrings in more ways than one. Speaking of the cast, one of the biggest appeals of the game (at least for me) was the fact that we got Phoenix and Maya back together for the first time since the original trilogy, and they certainly don't disappoint. As per usual for a Layton game, a lot of the characters you interact with are mostly there to give you puzzles, but it does have a few really good ones. My personal favorite unique characters here are Darklaw, Barnham (the two prosecutors/"inquisitors" for the game), and Emeer, who is essentially medieval Larry Butz if he were a raging alcoholic.

The game is very good at having fun at its own expense. There are several "bonus episodes" you can download (for free) once you beat the game, and they just mercilessly destroy the fourth wall the whole time, as well as poke fun at some of the more ridiculous elements of the story. Also, I mentioned before that Ace Attorney Investigations is probably my favorite soundtrack in the series, but this game isn't far behind. It's all orchestrated, and hearing some classic tunes redone in that style is fantastic. Overall, Layton vs. Ace Attorney is a clearly flawed game, but it's also very self-aware of its own shortcomings, so you're still able to have a really good time with it in spite of them.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite crossover?

63. Tetris Plus (LeonhartFour)
cnUPkjC

This is Tetris as it was always meant to be played! Okay, maybe not, but it's definitely the version I've had the most fun with over the years! Tetris Plus is basically Tetris combined with Lemmings, which sounds like a bizarre concept (and it kinda is), but it's a blast. Normally, the goal in Tetris is just to keep clearing lines and avoid letting the blocks stack up to the top, but there's an added wrinkle in Tetris Plus. There's a professor/archaeologist on the screen here, and the objective is to get him to the indicated exit. Now for a professor, this dude's pretty stupid. He'll walk straight ahead until he runs into something, and then he'll turn the other way and do the same thing. If there's a gap big enough for him to fit, he'll just fall through, even if it means plunging headlong to his death. Well, he does have infinite lives, so I guess he has a rather detached view of life and death! Anyway, you have to use the Tetris blocks to clear lines or block gaps so he can make it to the goal. Also, if you drop a block directly on top of him, he'll climb it. Oh right, to make things even more frenetic, there's a spiked ceiling that slowly drops the longer it takes you to reach the exit.

It's been a long time since I've played this, so maybe it's not as good as I remember, but my best friend and I played Tetris Plus a ton since there's a 2-player mode where the goal is to see who can get the professor to the exit the fastest. I don't know why, but we were utterly enchanted by this professor's abject stupidity. We would just yell and laugh in sheer delight at the screen as he died over and over again. Tetris Plus was just a source of dumb fun for the both of us, and I guess we were at the right age for it because middle school is the height of "dumb fun." I'd like to play it again one of these days to see if I still like it as much as I did then.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite puzzle game?
