I love the fact that the Thunder Plains is so discordant with the setting, like you're having a leisurely stroll through a relaxing area while you're actually running for your life to avoid getting struck by lightning.

(also FFX's Besaid Island sucks)

that being said if you want an alarm guaranteed to get you out of bed as quickly as possible

54. Portal 2 (banananor)
TrCZu72

While I enjoyed the original Portal, it feels a bit basic. Some people enjoy its simplicity, but I liked the fact that the sequel expanded on the original in many ways. The primary new gameplay element was the addition of various gels you can apply to surfaces, which you can either bounce off of or move across at high speeds, depending on which one you use. There's also one that makes a surface that you normally couldn't place a portal on now be able to take one. It allows for more complexity in the puzzle rooms, but at the same time, they're never so frustratingly difficult that you can't figure it out. Portal 2 manages to find the right balance between being challenging while also never making the average player feel like it's something they can't solve. You can usually figure out what the next step is fairly quickly, so the trick is executing it properly. I've heard the co-op is pretty fun, too, but I never tried that out, so I can't speak to that.

I also thought Portal 2's setting and story were way better. In the original, the Aperture Labs felt so sterile. I guess that's what they were going for, but I liked the rundown ruins vibe of the labs in the second game, as well as the underground area. The plot was much more enjoyable for me since it wasn't just GlaDOS monologuing the entire time. Now all the Weighted Companion Cube stuff was stupid, but Wheatley, PotaDOS, and especially Cave Johnson (voiced by the incomparable J.K. Simmons) were all great. GlaDOS was better now that she had other characters to play off of, too. I thought the last boss here was great. The solution to winning was really cool, and they pulled it off really well. I honestly didn't have high expectations for Portal 2 since I thought the original was just decent and not much more, so it definitely surprised me by how good it was.

Bonus Question: Which Portal game is your favorite?

Unsurprisingly, nearly all of Fawles's stuff comes in the second half. He only has 12 lines in the first part.

(with the exception of maybe Big Boss but he's AWOL for 99% of the Solid series anyway)

hey now Big Boss probably has as much screen time as Solid Snake by this point...!

KamikazePotato posted...
(because Solid Snake being a clone of BB made for a really easy excuse even despite Liquid looking/sounding nothing like him)

I like the probably unintentional irony that despite Big Boss supposedly having all these "soldier genes," he looks the most like the son that supposedly had the recessive genes.

also one of my favorite things ever is the fact that Kojima made Liquid Snake the scapegoat after everyone mocked his genetics plotline in MGS1 by just saying Liquid is stupid when it comes to science

KamikazePotato posted...
If you don't believe me, believe Big Boss, who spends most of the ending cutscene of MGS4 acknowledging that Snake fixed all of their f***ups.

Yeah, I quote that dialogue whenever someone tries to claim Big Boss is the real hero of MGS instead of Solid Snake. Big Boss himself acknowledges that Snake was a better man than he is and probably would've handled everything better if he had been in his shoes.

So yeah, while I like Big Boss better because of his fall from grace, both of them are top 5 characters for me, and Snake is the true hero of the series.

Man, even without the aftermath, the final testimony in 3-4 might be a top ten cross-examination for the series.

also I guess it should've been obvious but I'm also wondering if the reason why Valerie and Dahlia set up Fawles to take the fall was because Iris backed out of the plan last minute and they had to improvise? maybe the plan wasn't originally to have him be the scapegoat?

not sure why I'm suddenly considering so many things on 3-4 I hadn't considered until now

either way I'm nearly done so numbers will be forthcoming soonish

"Ms. Fey must be truly desperate if she's trying to bring back the dead."

the multiple layers of irony in that line just dawned on me for the first time

I'm also realizing the irony of Mia suggesting that Dahlia would've died by landing on the bedrock if she was pushed off the bridge as she claimed

55. GoldenEye 007 (Pirateking2000)
10PzJmD

I've never been a big fan of first-person shooters. I could probably count the ones I've put any significant time into with one hand, and it's almost exclusively been playing multiplayer with friends. GoldenEye is one of those select few. I've heard the single player campaign is pretty good, but I have no idea because I didn't play it. Plus, I didn't own this game. My best friend did, so I only played it when I went over to his house, but we'd play for hours at a time. We usually just played the normal mode, but we'd occasionally mix it up by playing License to Kill (one-hit kills with any weapon) or The Man with the Golden Gun (the Golden Gun can kill in one hit, but there's only one on the map, so it's a race to get to it first). I initially made the mistake of playing as Jaws a lot because I thought he looked cool, but it took me a while to realize that the fact that he was so big made him easier to kill than all the other players. Oddjob was the one you wanted to be.

Now I've seen others say over the years that people only loved GoldenEye back in the day because they didn't play real FPS games and didn't realize how bad the controls were, relatively speaking, or that it hasn't aged well at all as the genre has rapidly advanced past it. Both things may be true. I am definitely one of those people who doesn't have much experience with the genre, as I already said, so it's possible that I just didn't know any better. I probably haven't played the game in close to 20 years now. Maybe it doesn't hold up anymore, but I'll probably never find out. I'm content just to cling to my nostalgic memories of GoldenEye and let it maintain the place in my heart that it currently occupies.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite FPS?
