One of the nice things about Skies of Arcadia is that, although it does have some perma-missables, none of the major things (Discoveries, Crew, Moonfish, Chams) are. That's actually pretty smart level design.

45. Final Fantasy XIII (Robazoid)
bsllMtF

I'm sure I'll get my fair share of disagreements over having Final Fantasy XIII this high (and above VI, to boot!), but I really like this game. It's got one of my favorite playable casts in the series. Yeah, virtually no other character in the game matters other than maybe Serah and Barthandelus, but it honestly didn't bother me that much because I loved the interaction between the main six. This was the first Final Fantasy game to have random banter as you traveled through the field together, and I love me some banter. I liked how their stories diverged and intertwined until they all finally came together because it was pretty interesting to watch how it all played out. Yes, I even really like Hope! I thought he was super annoying at first like everyone else, but I thought the payoff in Chapter 7 was totally worth it all. For all his bluster about wanting to be a hero up to that point in the game, Snow actually earned it there. That was definitely the high point in the game for me.

I love Final Fantasy XIII's battle system, too. Yeah, it's kind of lame that you can only control one character at a time, and that one character getting KO'd resulting in a game over is dumb as well, but it's just so much fun. I love switching back and forth between the different classes. Makes the battles feel frenetic, and it encourages you to experiment with different setups and figure out how to get past difficult fights. My party of choice was Fang as a Commando, Lightning as a Ravager, and Hope as a Synergist. Final Fantasy XIII even kept the best part of Xenosaga II's battle system by giving you the ability to launch enemies in the air. That one's a real game-changer, and it makes fights even more fun. It helps that this game might have the best random battle music in the series!

I thought the premise of Final Fantasy XIII's plot was really intriguing. You've got these six characters who've literally been branded as enemies of the state, and they're put into what seems to be as close of a no-win situation as you can get: Help destroy the world and become a crystallized statue for your efforts or become a mindless zombie forever. I feel like Square might have backed themselves into too hard of a corner to get out of with it though, and the game doesn't have a very satisfying conclusion as a result. Part of the problem is that the game doesn't do a very good job of explaining itself, even the stuff it hides away in the Codex. I don't know that Final Fantasy XIII really needed a sequel, much less two, because I thought it ended definitively enough as is, even if it wasn't that great of an ending, as I just said. I still need to play Lightning Returns at some point to see how it all concludes because it might change my mind. We'll see!

Bonus Question: Which Final Fantasy XIII game was your favorite?

I think that's all for tonight. We should finish up the next tier tomorrow!

Went bowling tonight. Don't bowl that often, maybe once or twice per year. Had a decent game (by my standards) but it was also kind of annoying because I was so close to being a lot better. I got at least 8 pins on every frame, but only had one strike and one spare the whole night, so I didn't even break 100.

It's highly unlikely those will ever get remade. They weren't exactly best-sellers.

Shadow Hearts 1 made the mistake of releasing in the same window of time as Final Fantasy X.

46. Shadow Hearts (tazzyboyishere)
aQJCB9O

This game is still sitting in my PS3, waiting for Quinton to come back and beat it. Anyway, Shadow Hearts is often a dark game with a twisted sense of humor, best embodied by the main character, the Rude Hero himself, Yuri Hyuga. He never backs down from a fight and always has a snarky insult or two for just about everybody he meets (friend or foe), but he also has the ability to transform into various monstrous forms. In the game's terminology, he's called a Harmonixer, someone who can fuse his own soul with another being's, albeit with the inherent risk of losing your sense of self if you bite off more than you can chew. Yuri acts tough and unflappable on the outside, but on the inside, the fear of eventually being consumed by his ability nearly overwhelms him at times (You can travel inside his mind, which resembles a graveyard). Part of his character development is learning how to conquer his fears. In terms of gameplay, Yuri's Fusion abilities make him super powerful because he can transform into whatever the situation requires. The game puts some limitations on this by making it impractical to switch between forms multiple times in a single battle, but one form is usually enough as long as you know what you need.

As far as the overall battle system goes, it's kind of weird. You have this thing called the Judgment Ring, and each character's is different. There are a varying slots on each ring depending on what action you take (Physical attacks usually have three), and there's a hand that rotates around it like a clock when you choose your action. You have to hit X when it's on the slot in order to successfully attack, so you could potentially do absolutely nothing on your turn if you mess up the timing. You can also get critical hits every time, too, if you can get precise enough with your button presses. Covenant really builds and expands on it (and From The New World does, too, I imagine), so it feels really primitive going back to this one after you've played the sequel(s).

I haven't mentioned any characters other than Yuri yet because he's by far the best character in the game. That's not to say there are no other good characters. There are a couple others. The female lead, Alice, and the main antagonist are both pretty good, too, but most of the playable characters are rather flat and one-dimensional. I like using Keith and Margarete in my party because they have cool moves and good designs, but they're nothing special as characters. It's a pretty solid story with some really good twists though, and watching Yuri's character development along the way is a real treat. Shadow Hearts is worth playing for him alone. It's a pretty short game, too. I think my final playtime was like 25ish hours, so it's worth a shot if you've wanted to give the series a try. I know it's still relatively obscure, so I'd like to see more people get into it.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Shadow Hearts game?

47. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Shonen_Bat)
Ta8HaLe

You may be surprised to see a Zelda game so high on my list, but I really liked Twilight Princess. It was the first Zelda game I beat, and the first I finished without dropping it at some point and coming back to it later. I played the Wii version, so I got to be right-handed Link, which may be blasphemy to some people, but I am obviously not a Zelda purist! In fact, I don't really mind many of the problems I've heard others mention. I don't have a problem with Hyrule Field being mostly empty because it's just a way to get from dungeon to dungeon for me, and I've not found any other Zelda's version of it to be anything special either. I actually kind of liked the Wolf Link mechanic, especially since it doesn't get overused. Doing it once in a while was fine to me. It's not as colorful as other games in the series, which is a bummer, but not any sort of deal breaker. On the other hand, some people tend to hype up Midna as a great partner, but I didn't think she was all that great. She was decent, but nothing special.

As far as the stuff that I actually care about in Zelda is concerned (Dungeons, bosses, and gadgets), Twilight Princess excels in them all. The only really bad dungeon was the water one. It took me forever to finish that one. On the other hand, Arbiter's Grounds, Snowpeak Ruins, and City in the Sky are all excellent. Snowpeak in particular really surprised me with how good it was. I liked the Temple of Time and the Palace of Twilight, too. Arbiter's Grounds, City in the Sky, and the Twilight Realm all cap off with some outstanding boss fights, too. I guess the Zant fight was hit or miss for some people, but I thought it was fun. I liked all the background transitions to different areas in the game, and Zant himself acts wild and erratic, which was cool. The final fights with Ganondorf aren't very hard, but at this point, the games are mostly going for a cinematically satisfying experience, so it succeeds on that front. Then Twilight Princess has some really neat gadgets you collect along the way, like the Spinner, the Gale Boomerang, and the Dominion Rod. I had a lot of fun with the Double Clawshot in City in the Sky because it kinda felt like Spider-Man swinging from place to place. I don't think Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game (I'd probably give that to Breath of the Wild now), but it's the first one I can honestly say I really enjoyed, so it will always hold a special place in my heart for that alone.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Zelda game?

Just got back from seeing Black Panther. I thought it was fairly standard Marvel fare, which is to say still pretty good, but nothing special. I will say that I thought the main villain is probably one of the better ones in the MCU thus far. He has a pretty sympathetic background and isn't just a one-dimensional evil dude like many MCU villains. Also, it felt like they cut back on the humor. It's still there, but it's not like they're dropping a joke every minute, which is how it feels in some of them. It's got more of a Winter Soldier vibe to it, although I don't think Black Panther is as good as that one.

48. Trails in the Sky: First Chapter (Robazoid)
6xANdv3

I just finished replaying this game the other day, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. I think this is my first time doing any sort of in-depth analysis on Trails in the Sky, so we'll see how it goes! The vast majority of First Chapter is rather formulaic. You go to a town, perform a bunch of tasks, thwart the evil scheme that coincidentally came to a head while you were there, get commended for your efforts, move on to the next town, and repeat. There's an underlying plot that slowly builds up over the course of the game, and it finally starts coming together at the very end. First Chapter does a solid job of shifting the tone and direction of the story near the conclusion in order to transition seamlessly into Second Chapter. The last chapter in general is just spectacular, and then they nail you with an ending I totally wasn't expecting, so it definitely finishes strong.

Perhaps the greatest appeal of Trails in the Sky in general is its fully realized world (and the fact that they paid homage to Final Fantasy Tactics by having characters just walk in place). Nearly all of the NPCs in this game have names, regularly updating dialogue, and even little side stories of their own that make you want to check back in on them often to see if they have something new to say. Most of the sidequests in the game require you to interact with other characters, and it's one of those games where it feels worthwhile to want to try to do nearly everything. There are some sidequests that are just "go kill this monster," but those are the minority. The playable cast is also really good for the most part. It's hard not to be charmed by Estelle, and Joshua has an air of coolness and mystery about him. They're your two mainstays, and the others rotate in and out as the plot demands, much like Final Fantasy IV. You don't get to choose your own party until the very last dungeon, which is kind of a bummer. There is an underlying romance that pops its head up from time to time in the game, but it's never really the focus, which is a good thing because I think it's kind of a weak point here. It gets handled a lot better in the sequel.

Now I've heard people compare the battle system of Trails in the Sky to Final Fantasy X, but I don't totally buy that. I get why they say that, because they're both conditionally turn-based and have a little sidebar that tells you the turn order, but that's where the similarities end. You can't change characters in and out on the fly (one of the main appeals of FFX, in my opinion), and you don't have characters who specialize in certain areas more than others. They're mostly interchangeable except for their S-Crafts, which give them enough distinction to where it doesn't feel too much like Final Fantasy VII's battle system (although orbments do seem an awful lot like Materia). S-Crafts are the best part of the battle system here, in my opinion. Each character has their own set of them that do a variety of things, and then they have one super move they can do that feels like a Limit Break once you've accrued at least 100 CP (Craft Points). The best thing about those moves is that you can activate them at any time and move right up to the front of the line, so they can really turn things around if you're in a pinch. So yeah, the battle system is fun, but Final Fantasy X it ain't.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite RPG battle system?

Anyway, the final stretch of Skies of Arcadia is so good. You've got Gregorio's sacrifice, the final fight with De Loco in Deep Sky, Ramirez invading the base, and there's still a lot left to go. Made it to the Great Silver Shrine, which might be the best dungeon in the game solely for the fact that it has no random encounters, but it's got lots of other good stuff, too!

49. Final Fantasy VI (Eerieka)
XjQcsuE

It's difficult for me to talk about Final Fantasy, although not for a lack of things to say. It's the opposite problem. I struggle being concise and figuring out what to omit. Anyway, my first experience with Final Fantasy VI was with the PS1 version, not the original SNES game. People talk about the load times with the Anthology and Chronicles ports, but I honestly don't remember them being anything notable. By the time I played it, the game had already amassed a reputation as one of the greatest RPGs ever. It didn't quite live up to that for me, as this list makes clear, but it's still a great game. Final Fantasy VI is kind of like a bridge between the old school games and the modern era that began with Final Fantasy VII. There's a much greater emphasis on cinematic storytelling and character development than before. The World of Ruin is essentially a bunch of sidequests dedicated to fleshing out the personalities and backstories of the cast. The goal was to have a game with no real main character but to have a true ensemble cast. Square didn't quite succeed on that front because you still have a few flat characters (like Umaro and Gogo) and most people consider Terra and/or Celes to be the main character, but it was an admirable effort, especially at the time it came out.

Final Fantasy VI is divided into two clearly demarcated halves: The World of Balance and the World of Ruin, with a very climactic scene at the end of Balance to signify the transition into Ruin. The Floating Continent is definitely my favorite part of the game because of the setting, the stakes, and the climax of the whole thing. I'm not sure which half of the game I like better because they both have their strong suits. The World of Balance tells a more cohesive, linear story with more of an emphasis on cast chemistry and character interaction. The World of Ruin sacrifices much of that for the sake of individual character quests, and most of that content is optional, so you have the freedom to do as much or as little as you want. Most of those character quests are really good though, with some very poignant moments and satisfying payoffs. The World of Ruin has a better atmosphere, too, in my opinion, just because of all that's changed around you from the World of Balance. Like I said, it's a tough call because it's mostly a matter of what they choose to emphasize, but they're both good. While Final Fantasy VI's cast is hit or miss, it's large enough that it's hard not to find at least one character you really like. My personal favorite is Locke, but I'm also a big fan of Celes, Sabin, and Edgar. That was always the party I rolled with when they were available.

Final Fantasy VI also tried to make the characters unique in gameplay by giving them their own special set of skills. Edgar's Tools and Sabin's Blitzes were great and another reason they were almost always in my main party. At the same time, once you started acquiring Espers, you could largely make your characters all the same by teaching them all the same spells and stuff, so it was an interesting juxtaposition between the two. The battle system is your typical turn-based Final Fantasy fare, but they put in some really cool environments and settings for some of the bosses, like literally fighting the Phantom Train while you run down the tracks (and letting Sabin suplex it for good measure) or fighting as you fall down a waterfall. Those were really cool touches that enhanced the game's presentation a lot for me. The dungeons could be rough at times, especially the split party ones (who thought that was a good idea), but Final Fantasy VI isn't a very hard game overall, so it's not too bad.

Bonus Question: Do you prefer the World of Balance or the World of Ruin?

Yep, you are never required to press at all in 1-1. That's why they don't even mention it as a mechanic until 1-2.

Also, Sahwit's first testimony is literally 10 lines.

Yeah, you can breeze through 1-1 in like 15 minutes if you just go straight for the contradictions and speed through the text.

If you're in the field, holding up your sword points you in the direction of the next Colossus if you're facing in the right direction.

Where Leonhart tries not to go insane in an attempt to complete a rather tedious quest.
