For the record, that 1 line for "Other" in 1-1 is from the Thinker.

Finally time for our first full-length traditional style case, although Phoenix won't have an assistant, so we still won't get a clear idea of the "standard" until 1-3, I guess!

also I'm thinking of clipping off anyone who doesn't hit a certain threshold for number of lines off of the "leaderboard" simply due to how many characters will eventually be on this thing

50. Jak II (tazzyboyishere)
IlyTEog

There's probably no sequel that has a greater mood whiplash compared to the original than Jak II. The original Jak & Daxter was a bright and colorful collect-a-thon platformer with a minimal story, a silent protagonist, and a snarky sidekick. In Jak II, you've still got a snarky sidekick and there's still SOME platforming, but everything else has undergone a major overhaul. The world is now dark and grimy, and it feels like they're going for a GTA vibe with Haven City. Like I said, there's still some platforming, but now there's a lot of weapons-based gameplay. It no longer revolves around collecting Power Cells, and now you're given a progression of missions to complete. The game isn't exactly cutscene-heavy by any means, but there's more of an emphasis on the story than the first one. Jak is no longer a silent hero, but now he's an edgey hero with attitude (complete with his new bad boy goatee) who's bent on revenge, further fomented by his new dark powers. As evidenced by their relative rankings on this list, I generally approved of all these changes! Plus, Daxter was one of the best parts of the first game, and he's still great here!

Now Jak II has its share of frustrating elements. You generally have to be on your "best behavior" when you're traversing through Haven City because you'll have a patrol on your tail otherwise. The game is infamous for how stingy its checkpoints can be. I still liked the gameplay a lot though. The missions were pretty varied, and Dark Jak was fun. It felt satisfying to finally break through some of the more difficult parts of the game. It's got some great boss fights, too. The Baron Praxis fight is probably my favorite one in the series. I enjoyed the story. It was certainly better than I'd have expected from a platformer, since this was before Naughty Dog had garnered their reputation for good cinematic storytelling. It might have started with this game, in fact. They didn't overwhelm the game with cutscenes. They used them moderately and put in a few really cool twists along the way. So yeah, while I'm a Ratchet & Clank guy (Play Ratchet & Clank), Jak & Daxter is pretty good, too, and especially Jak II.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Jak game?

51. Persona 3 (pyresword)
fq9Sgtq

Persona 3 divides itself into three phases, and the music even accommodates those divisions. I remember being amazed when I went back to school after summer break and the music had changed. There are few games that use their soundtrack as effectively as this game does. Now the three major Persona games I've played have two major themes that are pitted against each other. In Persona 3, the conflict is between life and death. Since there's so much focus on death, the atmosphere is appropriately dark most of the time. Nearly all of the important story events take place at night, and the game's calendar revolves around the cycles of the moon. There's a single hour when only Persona users and Shadows are active called the Dark Hour, and it's the only timeframe in which you can explore the game's towering dungeon called Tartarus. There has been a lot of criticism about how Tartarus works and its repetitive nature, but I honestly kinda liked it as a one-time thing. I enjoyed the sense of progress and the mystery of wondering just how high up it actually goes. Dungeons aren't usually the strong suit of the series anyway, so it's not that big of a deal to me either way.

The battle system isn't too complicated, although it can be frustrating because you can only control the protagonist. You can give general directions about what you want the other party members to do, but I didn't use that too much except against certain bosses. The protagonist can create a large number of Personas with a wide array of abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, so the biggest facet of the gameplay is figuring out how to maximize and upgrade them as you go along. Future games have made this a lot more convenient than it is in Persona 3, but experimenting with fusions is still fun. You can't just brute force your way through the game, at least on an initial playthrough.

The main draw of the Persona games starting with this one is the Social Link system. Why is this so appealing? I think there's a part of us that wants to feel like we're making a difference in the lives of people around us, and Persona allows us to experience that vicariously through the protagonist. Also, I guess there's a part of some of us us that wants to romance hot people we'd never have a chance of dating otherwise, but that doesn't sound as inspirational! I like the fact that the Social Links allow you to interact with a wide variety of people of all ages, personalities, and life circumstances. Some of them are great, and some of them are not so great. My personal favorites are Mitsuru's, Maiko's, Maya's, and Akinari's. It's kind of a bummer that the default version of Persona 3 (I haven't played P3P, so I'm not commenting on that version) doesn't give you S. Links with all the party members, but future iterations have fixed that.

As I said at the beginning, Persona 3 is split up into three parts. I think the story during the first part is actually rather slow and largely uninteresting. It's mostly used to recruit new party members. It doesn't really start to pick up until Aigis joins, and not necessarily because she's a good character. It's just that the story starts to turn in a new direction and begins building momentum. Once you hit the full moon operation in October, Persona 3 hits its full stride and never looks back from there. The final month of the game is absolutely amazing and might be my favorite stretch in the series. The last boss fight is one of my favorite moments in any game. It's rare to see a final boss that has such an excellent atmosphere and is actually challenging, too, so you're on the edge of your seat the entire time. The follow-up to the fight is absolutely fantastic, too. I can't speak highly enough of how strongly Persona 3 finishes. It's the main reason this game ranks as high as it does on this list.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite last boss in a game?

52. Steins;Gate (Mac Arrowny)
WNVD6HT

I watched the anime before I played the visual novel. I honestly didn't have any plans to play this game until it was the free PS+ game for Vita on PSN a year or two ago, but I'm glad I picked it up, mostly because of all the alternate endings that didn't make it into the show. The benefit of being privy to Okabe's inner thoughts also added a little more to his character that was absent from the anime. Plus, you get a lot of cool bonus conversations from texting back and forth with the characters so you can learn some little things about the characters along the way, such as finding out Luka/Ruka has an older sister. The art style threw me off at first merely because everyone is just so...sparkly, but I eventually got used to it and I like it now.

I'm not sure how to describe my experience with Steins;Gate strictly in terms of the game since I saw the anime first, so I might cross my wires a little bit, especially when it comes to my feelings on the story. The plot is basically a tale of two halves. The first half is a lot like a wacky slice of life centered around the Future Gadget Lab as they fiddle around with the time machine they accidentally invented with their microwave and try to figure out what it's capable of. There are the occasional dark and serious moments that give you a taste of what's to come, but those are few and far between at first. All of the members of the Future Gadget Lab have their fair share of eccentricities. The comedy is very hit or miss during this stretch. To be honest (and I think Quinton would concur with me since we watched the anime together), Kurisu was the one character who kept me invested through the slow and often uneventful trek through the first half because she's the only one I can say unequivocally is great the entire time.

However, everything changes after a specific event that I'm sure I don't even need to elaborate on if you've played the game/watched the show. Okabe's sheer determination to set right what went wrong is captivating. To be honest, the Hououin Kyouma persona wore a little thin when it was all he did, so I was thankful when he dropped the facade and let everyone see the real him more often. Steins;Gate got better in general once the eccentricities were toned down and used in moderation instead of keeping them on full tilt all the time. The second half is a wild ride full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how in the world Okabe was going to fix everything. Just when I'd think I had it all figured out, Steins;Gate would manage to surprise me again. If you're a fan of time travel plots, alternate timelines, multiple endings, and all that, I'd highly recommend it because this game is crazy in all the right ways once it gets going.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite game with multiple endings?

53. Xenogears (SaveEstelle)
mMKgCWC

I played Xenogears for the first time a couple years ago during Quinton's first stay here, so that probably enhanced my enjoyment of it quite a bit because he did voices for all the characters. My personal favorite voice he did was Rico's, and we'll both still occasionally just randomly do the voice from time to time when we're together. I almost never used Rico in my party though, because by his own admission, he's crap. I usually just stuck with the main four of Fei, Elly, Citan, and Bart, although I was convinced from the very beginning that Citan was evil and would eventually betray the party. For the sake of spoilers, I won't tell you whether I was right or not, but he DOES let Fei and Elly eat human flesh without them realizing what they were consuming and didn't tell them until afterwards, so take that as you will.

Anyway, to talk about the game itself, I'd heard a ton about how great the story is and how minor NPCs get more development than main characters in other RPGs from many people over the years. I think that's overstated, but it certainly does an admirable job of making nearly every semi-important character feel defined and distinct, especially considering how large the cast is. I played the Xenosaga trilogy before this, so I had some idea of what I was getting into in terms of the tone of the story. Xenogears has some of the same pitfalls in its storytelling, but it's overall a more satisfying experience. While there are lots of heavy moments here, the game knows when to insert some levity at the right time to prevent it from just being a depressing journey the whole way. The translation can unintentionally be hilarious, too, with completely unnecessary hyphens and Fei saying stuff like, "My father? You mean my dad?" As Quinton regularly reminded me, Xenogears was translated by just one man, so the game having a lot of errors is understandable. I think the graphics also add to the charm.

I've heard people say the gameplay isn't great, but I didn't really have a problem with it. It's not a top tier battle system or anything, but it's serviceable. The dungeons can be kind of rough because the encounter rate is a little high, and Xenogears insists on forcing you to occasionally do some platforming, so you can get punished and have to redo large swaths if you miss a jump. People talk about how bad the Tower of Babel was, but I honestly didn't have that hard of a time with it. That Shevat dungeon was the absolute worst though because I missed jumps and dropped down to a previous screen several times, and there are multiple forced encounters that you have to do every single time you go through certain parts. Of course, Xenogears disc 2 is infamous because it was clearly rushed, and there are large portions where Fei is just sitting in a chair and telling you what happened instead of letting you play through it. Again, it didn't bother me too much because I've played stuff like Umineko. It's just a little odd. Sure, you'd like to be able to play it instead of hear about it, but I don't hold it against the game, for whatever the reason.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Xeno game?
