what did 64 do other than 4 controllers?

Basically every game follows MK64's template for races, not SMK, such as three laps being the standard, longer tracks so you can't lap the field like you can in SMK, the properties of items (as well as introducing a few recurring ones, like the fake item box, triple shells, the gold mushroom, and the blue shell). And yes, having 4 players is a huge deal.

Not sure what rankings SMK finishes above MK64 in though, but I imagine it's not actual fan rankings.

I think the game everyone seems to be really, really sleeping on here is Super Mario Kart

unless everyone is just fatigued from putting Mario Kart in all the other rushmores

I think it's another case of "just because it's the first one doesn't mean it belongs on a Rushmore"

MK64 was really the one that codified what the series became

I think Mario World is a good candidate because I feel like it's instantly associated with the SNES. If you ask someone to name a SNES game, World is going to be the first a lot of people think of. Like it didn't do anything revolutionary (other than introduce Yoshi, I guess), but I think it's almost ubiquitous with the console, kind of in the way Mario 64 is with the N64.

Still working my way through Rebirth Chapter 7, but a lot has happened (and also this Johnny sidequest will never end)!

The banter going up Mt. Corel has been great. One of my favorite exchanges in the entire game so far was Red XIII telling Aerith she'd become one with the mountain, and her thanking the mountain for taking her in. Then Cloud goes, "What the heck are you doing, Red?" And he replies, "It happens to first time climbers all the time. Don't worry. If she faints, I'll carry her." So good.

The Turks show up just to drop off some black robes and troll us with a big machine fight. It turns out afterwards that Barret, Tifa, and Yuffie were like 50 feet away the whole time. You guys didn't see or hear anything? Could've used your help! But after the boss fight, we get our second Zack scene, this time with Elmyra coming to move Aerith (who isn't dead but comatose) to her house. Zack brings Cloud (also still comatose) along. Before and after this scene, we see Aerith staring off into the distance, so was she "watching" this unfold somehow? She seems to know about stuff like that somehow, so I'm curious to see how it goes.

We also get a board meeting with Rufus and the directors talking about Magnus Materia (which I assume is the same as the Huge Materia from the original game). It turns out that the materia comes from Weapons (or it might be the other way around because they said the Weapons were born from the materia. Maybe it's a little of both), and they're already active, as opposed to becoming active only after Sephiroth summoned Meteor in the original. Hojo is obsessed with getting his hands on one, and Scarlet has apparently been trying to produce their own version of Magnus Materia.

Reeve asks Rufus about the Neo Midgar Plan and how the previous President said dropping the plate would be in service of that plan, and so he questions how he knows the Promised Land actually exists. Rufus seems to be taking a different approach in this game, where he doesn't seem particularly interested in Neo Midgar, the Promised Land, or any of it. He seems focused on Wutai more than anything else, but I wonder what his actual goals are. Rufus also asks the mic drop question of, "Why didn't any of you try to stop this insane plan to drop the plate?" Nobody has an answer, and Rufus just walks out, with Dark Nation at his side as always.

Back in the present, we make it to the ruined Corel Reactor, and whaddya know? We find the aforementioned Weapon swimming around in the mako that's spilled out of the reactor, and there's the Magnus Materia, too! Yuffie is drooling at the prospect of getting that materia. She also explains what's going on with Wutai. I guess her old man is out, and now Lodbrok and the other Ex-SOLDIERs from Ever Crisis are in charge of an interim government. I imagine we won't actually see any of this stuff until the third game, so it's just exposition for now.

We reach the point where the bridge is raised, and the black robes decide they'd rather swim for it than wait for us to find a way to lower it. Cloud has one of his weird spells, and he almost falls into the water with them. Barret demands he stay behind and recuperate for the time being, so now Yuffie is in charge of getting the bridge lowered. I'm not a big Yuffie fan, but it's kinda nice to see her get integrated into the story now that she's not an optional character anymore.

or maybe cartoon moms (western animation and anime both count)

Is this case ambitious? I honestly think it's aiming pretty low. Ambitious is never a word I would have used. 3-5 is ambitious.

Theoretically it was aiming to change one of the status quos of the series (the judge is sole arbiter of the trial)

I suppose practically speaking, even if they had maintained the Jurist System, it wouldn't have changed that much unless you started doing the silly thing GAA did and have them all in the room arbitrarily casting votes whenever they feel like it

maybe Takumi wrote GAA because he wanted everyone to know what his vision for the Jurist System beyond AJ actually was

I mean, 4-4 is ambitious, but I don't necessarily like what it's trying to achieve and its own messaging is either intentionally hypocritical (unlikely) or lacking self-awareness. Phoenix's logic for trying to install the Jurist System is essentially, "The system is rigged against us," while simultaneously rigging the jury in his favor.

although I do like your idea that 4-0 is so weirdly told because it's like Phoenix is telling the jurists what happened while doing the voices and flanderizing the characters himself

"and then Gumshoe was like 'hey pal I'm taking you down today!' LOL"

Remember how in AA1 von Karma presented false evidence, and he got away with a single penalty that didn't affect his case in the slightest?

And still won the case! Zak was going to get instantly declared guilty because the only conclusion for why a defense attorney would use forged evidence is because his client is guilty.

The way Dual Destinies handles this plot point is hilarious. They basically have to tiptoe around it because it sounds dumber the longer you think, and because Apollo Justice put Phoenix in a role without considering the world it had built up until that point. Edgeworth shows up and goes 'eeey sorry I couldn't help you out back then', and it's like, why Edgeworth? Why couldn't you or anyone else help Phoenix out back then? Why couldn't Phoenix help Phoenix out back then?

Yeah, it's just wild how it happens. They make Maya go away with absolutely zero explanation despite showing her and Phoenix together merely days before 4-0 in AAI1 and AAI2. Like, did she take off for Khura'in the day before 4-0? It's weird how everyone, including Phoenix, just kinda resigns themselves to "well there's nothing we can do" for seven years.

4-3 is probably Klavier at his most unhelpful! Or at least in court. 4-3 is probably why Klavier feels like an inconsistently written character because I think they wanted to paint him as the nice helpful dude, but it doesn't come across that way during the trial segments here. He hides lots of pertinent info until Apollo stumbles upon them and just goes "LOL already knew that Herr Forehead!"

like it makes sense when Edgeworth, Franziska, or Godot is hiding stuff, but if Klavier is supposed to be the dude who cares about the truth, why is he hiding stuff

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Chapter 6 complete!

Costa Del Sol was pretty fun! I enjoyed getting to cruise around town on a Segway. I dominated at the Fall Guys soccer game with Red XIII. I had to turn off the adaptive trigger during the rifle shooting game because it was straining my fingers trying to rapid fire. The Queen's Blood variant here was pretty neat, and I think it helped me understand the game some more.

All the stuff on the beach was great. Even Johnny got to have his one shining moment when Yuffie uses him to kinda sorta save the day. The Hojo conversation was pretty good, and then the follow-ups with everyone on the beach afterward were great, too, especially Aerith's. I wonder if she's being literal when she's talking about her future self because she definitely knows something about the Whispers and the alternate timeline that the rest of the party doesn't. I do think it's neat that she and Red XIII can confide in each other. She can talk through her problems, and he can use his real teenage voice instead of the gruff voice he uses around everyone else to make himself seem more mature. Also I thought it was cool that they did a version of the Yuffie recruitment scene from the original, although I imagine she doesn't steal from you and run off if you pick the wrong option this time!

I need a breakdown on all of these lol besides the second and third 4-ways contest

The S3&K disrespect is twofold! In the 2009 Games Contest, after the initial bracket reveal, Allen allowed B8 to make topics arguing for one game to be removed and replaced by a better option. I immediately made a topic asking for Sonic 3 to be replaced by Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Allen quickly shut it down and said it wasn't allowed.

Then in the 2015 Games Contest, the Guru nomination was Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which we could officially nominate now because it had a Steam port. However, it was shafted from the bracket because Allen also took review scores and such into account, so it got left out (I believe he stated it was the game that had the most nominations that didn't make the bracket). This was also why Mario 1 didn't make it.

Speaking of Mario 1, back in the 2009 Games Contest again, there were questions as to why Allen had made divisions by era again like the 2004 Games Contest had done. He replied that he didn't think older games would have a chance against newer games, and he literally cited Mario 1 vs. Halo as an example of an unfair matchup.

Finally, when a contingent of us (including me) appealed to Allen to open up the Character Battle to all fictional characters, he replied that he was against it because he didn't want to see Darth Maul vs. Jane Eyre in a contest.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Chapter 4 complete!

The Upper Junon stuff was indeed very good. I dominated the parade, naturally. And even more naturally, Yuffie gets in the way of our deal with Rufus (although Barret says we're better off not striking any sort of deal with Shinra, not even a "I won't bother you if you don't bother me" one). I do like Rufus's characterization so far, so I'll be curious to see where they take it from here.

I enjoyed the rematch with Roche. Wonder if cutting his motorcycle in half at the end was meant to be a callback to Advent Children's over the top action, which is befitting someone as over the top as Roche. Also, I had a random thought regarding the Seventh Infantry dudes that follow Cloud around at the end. They ask him, "Will we see you again?" and he answers, "Count on it," it made me wonder if they'll be the Shinra dudes on the submarine later on. I don't know if they intended for that exchange to be foreshadowing, but I'm maybe taking it that way...!

Anyway, now we're on the cargo ship, and it seems the first order of business is a Queen's Blood tournament!

I am now in Upper Junon in Rebirth. We meet Glenn Lodbrok, whom I've been told is from that Ever Crisis game. To me, he looks like the newest member of Organization XIII and he just showed up in the wrong game. He apparently works for Wutai, and he offers some thinly veiled threats to Rufus. I'm hoping the game will eventually give some background at some point and not just assume we all played Ever Crisis!

Yeah, I figured we'd get access to the chocobos relatively quickly since the Chocobo Ranch was the next location after Kalm in the original game, so I didn't go too far out of my way until I got there.

Also, I'm kinda glad they simplified weapons in this game. I didn't need a Crystarium for all my weapons in Remake, so just having a bonus ability and skill associated with each weapon is good enough for me.

Hype, this looks pretty good!

Still need to play the first DLC, but they'll both have to wait until after Rebirth.

Yeah, I don't think you need to mix things up for diversity. Just go with whatever.
