Ranking the epic cases

3-5 > 5-5 > 6-5 > 1-4 > AAI2-5 > 2-4 > 4-4 > 1-5 > AAI1-5

AAI1-5 is really the only bad one though

I absolutely loved 5-5 and 5-4 although not included sets it up very nicely. Blackquill was the highlight in that case and the entire Phantom mastermind (I guessed who it was correctly the moment they slightly implied it) thing was gripping from start to finish.

AAI2-5 and especially 2-4 are overrated IMO. 2-4, the entire stalling for time before Maya gets rescued really killed an otherwise great epic case. AAI2-5 which I beat very very recently, has the most underwhelming mastermind imaginable. The more intriguing villains were all used as the killers in lesser cases.

Oh, 5-5 has some great stuff, to be sure, but to be me its ending was probably the biggest letdown ending of the series - the Phantom just dies and we never find out what he was trying to do or who he was working for. It just felt like a cliffhanger more than a real ending, which is not satisfying because we barely got any time to consider the whole spy aspect of the story.

But at the end of 5-5, the Phantom didn't die. I guess it would've been nice to get more information about the particulars of who hired him, but I thought what he was trying to do was made pretty clear.

End of 5-5 would have been better if Fullbright was the actual villain, and not some nameless faceless dude we didn't even know existed until 5 minutes prior. It lessened the impact of the takedown a lot

32. Kingdom Hearts (NBIceman)
mIetLMm

Now I'm not a Disney fanatic like some people on Board 8, but I did grow up watching many of their greatest hits, so when they announced a game that would cross over with my favorite video game series, Final Fantasy, I was understandably hyped about it, particularly once I found out Squall--excuse me, Leon--would be in it. Even though Kingdom Hearts has focused more on its own original content over time and less on Disney and especially Final Fantasy, that was originally what got most people in the door. The production values on the first game were very high, and they managed to net some high profile actors and actresses as voice actors, like Billy Zane, David Boreanaz (I really wish they had been able to keep him), Mandy Moore, and, in perhaps the oddest casting decision, Lance Bass to play Sephiroth. The biggest get may have been getting James Woods back to play Hades again because I just can't imagine anyone else in that role.

Much like I discussed with Ace Attorney in the previous writeup, Kingdom Hearts has gradually expanded in scale to the point that it's considered to be one of the most convoluted and nonsensical plots in gaming. The first game thrived on the fanservice of going to classic Disney worlds and interacting with the characters, as well as meeting and fighting some of the greatest Final Fantasy characters in the series (and Yuffie). Of course, the first game did have original content, like Sora and his friends, as well as the Heartless, but it was mostly integrated into all the Disney/Final Fantasy stuff until the last couple of worlds, where it takes center stage. You don't even meet Ansem until close to the end of the game. I was fine with that here because Sora wasn't that great of a character, and he spent too much time not getting along with Donald Duck. Plus, like I said, I was there for the fanservice to begin with, although they did get me invested into the series as a whole with Hollow Bastion, which was an excellent world. I think they handled it the right way by giving you what you came for up front and banking on it being enough to hook you when it got to the new stuff at the end.

The battle system in Kingdom Hearts is excellent. It's an action RPG instead of a traditional turn-based one, so it's more fast-paced, and it gradually gets more complex as you level up and learn new abilities. You also only have a certain number of Ability Points, so you have to choose which skills you value the most and which ones you can do without. The game also has a bunch of really great boss fights where they manage to capture the atmosphere very well. The Riku fights were my favorites, but there were many good ones. Kingdom Hearts also has a fantastic soundtrack, with a good blend of original songs and remixes of classic tunes. That's the strength of the first game as a whole. It manages to blend the classic with the new in an effective way.

Bonus Question: What's the main appeal of Kingdom Hearts to you: Disney, Final Fantasy, or the original content?

Final Fantasy was always the draw of KH to me. I never developed the fanatical love for Disney that a lot of people in my age group seem to have.

I did remember liking the first game a lot back when I played it in 2002, but I went back through it on the PS4 collection last year and I don't think that game holds up very well.

At the time it was Final Fantasy + Disney.

I didn't realize how heavily it would lean on the Disney side, but that's fine because the first game had most of my favorite classics in it.

Then I was in it for the original story content until about KHII when it all kind of shit the bed. Now I'm mostly in it for the gameplay (which is still probably my favorite blend of action and RPG), and Disney worlds.

so basically just during Chain of Memories

but yeah I'm not sure how much the Disney stuff is going to work for me if they're going mostly newer stuff since I think the only Disney animated movies I've watched in the last 15ish years are Inside Out, WALL-E, and Zootopia.

31. NieR (tazzyboyishere)
I6Ma2Rl

NieR is an unusual game in many ways. The protagonist is a middle-aged father (in the version we got anyway), which you almost never see in JRPGs. His companions are a floating, talking book, a bishonen boy (not uncommon in JRPGs) who transforms into a skeleton thing partway through the game, and an extremely vulgar girl wearing lingerie. In fact, your introduction to the game is a profanity-laden rant by that girl, and it's so unexpected that it leaves a lasting impression on you. NieR is very good at confusing you right from the beginning. After the opening sequence between Nier and his daughter Yonah, the game then skips ahead 1,312 years, where we find...Nier and his daughter Yonah. The twists and turns continue all the way to the end of the first playthrough, and once you start a New Game+ run, the game hits you in the face with even more of them. The second playthrough completely changes your perspective on the entire story, but it doesn't stop there. It keeps going all the way up until you encounter the final choice of the game. You just never know what to expect from NieR, and that's part of what makes it so great.

I've heard people complain about the graphics and the gameplay, but I didn't have a problem with either of them. Sure, it's not the most technically impressive game visually, but it's not like it's ugly and janky. I suppose the battle system can feel pretty repetitive because you'll likely be using the same two or three spells over and over again along with your weapon of choice. Plus, the world is rather small, so you better get used to going to the same handful of locations over and over again. Plus, you can't control anyone other than Nier himself, which is a bummer. However, they also never die, which is nice. Of course, you'll probably never die either, because it's not a particularly difficult game, at least on the default setting, especially once you hit the New Game+ portion of the game. It's kind of nice to be able to breeze through the extra runs quickly without the random battles slowing you down since that's not what you're in it for at that point.

The optional sidequests might be the most frustrating part of Nier. Thankfully, they're optional, but on the other hand, they're full of utterly delicious banter between the party members that you can't get anywhere else, so part of me wants to force my way through them for the dialogue. I didn't do them all because I ultimately decided it just wasn't worth it, but it was quite the dilemma. The party is great together though. Grimoire Weiss was my personal favorite of the bunch, but they're all really likable. Of course, no writeup of Nier would be complete without mentioning the soundtrack, which is one of the best in any game I've heard. My personal favorites are probably the consensus popular choices like Shadowlord, Song of the Ancients -Fate-, Kaine -Salvation-, and Hills of Radiant Wind, although I really like Temple of Drifting Sands a lot as far as songs that don't get enough love are concerned. It's just an excellent soundtrack overall though.

Originally, I liked KH1 because I didn't know any better and it wasn't truly awful yet. But what sold me on it was Disney.

Now? Regret. Just sheer regret.

For game OSTs, my favorite has to be, of all things, MadWorld. I had no idea a gangly white boy from the suburbia could like rap and hip hop so much!

The whole Disney + FF concept is what drew me to KH initially. Unfortunately that's all been thrown to the wayside in favor of all the other nonsense.

Favorite game OST is really tough. Tales of the Abyss, La-Mulana, The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, and a couple of classic Mega Man games are all pretty strong contenders. I'll say La-Mulana just because it's been my favorite lately, but my answer could easily change by next week.

30. Final Fantasy Tactics (SaveEstelle)
sFNIdwz

Final Fantasy Tactics wasn't originally supposed to be a Final Fantasy game, but it was repurposed into one to take advantage of the massive success of Final Fantasy VII, which had released the year before. They even shoehorned Cloud into the game as a guest character. It was probably a smart move since it got people who jumped into the series with VII (like me) and were still hyped up about how great it was to get this one, too. I might have gotten it anyway because, as I said in earlier writeups, I played practically everything Square put out in the late '90s and early '00s, but it was definitely an added incentive for me to do so. Right away, you know you're getting something totally different from Final Fantasy VII because of the graphics, the setting, and the gameplay. Tactics has a very strong opening sequence though, so you're willing to deal with the changes. You're introduced to a cool group of characters with awesome-looking moves (and chants: "Life is short! Bury! Steady Sword!") in a practically impossible to lose (even if you're actively trying to sabotage your own squad) first battle, followed by Delita making off with the princess anyway with a classic line that I don't even need to quote for you to know what it is at this point.

For a lot of people, the main draw of Final Fantasy Tactics is the battle system. While I do like the strategy aspect of it and aesthetically it looks and feels great, I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of the job system in general. I've beaten this game several times, and I've probably never even touched half of the job classes. I stick with the ones I already like and know will get the job done (pun intended), and I'll gradually phase out the generic units as the special characters join with their unique classes. Yes, I am the guy who loves completely wrecking everything in Chapter 4 with Orlandu. It's my reward for making it that far. However, on my last playthrough, I did complete a Geomancer SCC (Straight Character Challenge), which was a lot of fun and a pretty good challenge (although Golgorand and the second Balk fight were super annoying). I don't think I'd ever do another one though.

Final Fantasy Tactics is also often lauded for its complex storyline (and silly translation, regardless of which one you're using). It's a plot full of political intrigue, backstabbing, and a bunch of demons trying to take over the world. Some people don't like how the Lucavi stuff eventually overtakes the whole story, but I didn't mind it so much. I love Ramza though. He's one of my absolute favorite heroes. In a world where virtually everyone is conspiring against each other using devious and underhanded methods for personal gain, Ramza is the one guy who's adamant about doing the right thing for Ivalice's sake, not his own. For all of Delita's bluster about going against the tide, Ramza is the dude who actually does it. Even when it seems like everything's falling apart, everyone's turned against him, and he's not going to get anything out of it, he just keeps fighting for what he believes he's right. He's awesome like that.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite job class?

29. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Anagram)
Cks6PKm

It's hard to believe Super Smash Bros. Brawl is ten years old now. The hype campaign for this game was unparalleled, starting with the initial trailer that broke the internet when Snake showed up at the end as pictued above (and that was twelve years ago now). Then there was the Smash Dojo, with near daily updates about additions and changes to the game. Sometimes it was ridiculous stuff like, "YOU MUST RECOVER," but they also slowly unveiled the roster with it, including another third-party reveal in Sonic the Hedgehog. They also introduced one of the bigger new mechanics: The Final Smash, which was touted as something that can completely turn a match around. Then there was its new story mode, the Subspace Emissary, which attempted to tell a full story using all the characters in the game instead of just being a new Adventure Mode. In some ways, the intense hype behind Brawl also contributed to much of the backlash against it when people realized it wasn't merely a Melee clone with more characters. Many people went back to Melee and never looked back, and when Smash 4 came out, many more went to that and never looked back. Brawl is largely a forgotten game these days except by people like me who loved it then but haven't gotten into Smash 4 for one reason or another.

Of course, with a game like this, one of the biggest things is the roster, and naturally, Brawl is bigger than ever. It's also quality and not just quantity, so while I played a lot with my usual mains Kirby and Luigi, I spent a ton of time with Snake and Sonic. They were both really fun. I liked all of Snake's projectiles, and Sonic's speed allowed me to play aggressively and chase people down. I liked Diddy and Ike, too. I enjoyed the new Final Smashes, even if some of them were pretty lame and many of them were exactly the same (LANDMASTER). There were a bunch of new stages, although there were a lot of gimmicky ones that rotate through everything every couple of minutes. For some reason, Brawl thought that everyone played two minute matches, so they made that the default for everything, including online play. I didn't do a lot of online since the Wii wasn't exactly the best for that. Perhaps the best quality of life change Brawl made was the soundtrack, which had a lot of remixed classic themes and a bunch of new music for each stage. You could set the frequency of each song as well, so if you didn't like a song, you never had to hear it, and if you really liked one, you could hear it as much as you want.

I suppose I should say a little bit about Subspace Emissary since they made such a big deal out of it. I only played through it one time, but I enjoyed it for what it was. They had some cool cutscenes and setpieces, and some of the character interactions were pretty neat. Somehow King Dedede ended up being the low-key star of the whole thing. To be honest, they did more with it than I expected them to do. I thought it'd be short and simple, but it had a lot of levels and several bosses (even though the boss fights generally weren't great). I'd like to play it again one of these days just to see what I think of it now, but it was pretty decent overall.
