The only reasons I can think of for Tifa to overcome that big of an SFF gap against Sephiroth with no major games for Tifa is either people got hot over the idea of seeing HD Tifa in FF7R-trailers or Sephiroth got #MeToo'd.

I've not bothered to look closely, but I have a theory #MeToo had an impact that benefitted female characters. Our biggest examples are Zelda, Samus, and Tifa -- not only did they have great runs, but they all had significant increases in how well they held up in their SFF rematches (Mario/Samus, Mario/Zelda, Sephiroth/Tifa). Zelda's reason to boost is the clearest..but Samus and Tifa too? The site's biggest female names in gaming had impressive matches. I don't know how well this carries over from #MeToo in that way from the year before and how much of it is for other reasons...but these three at the top can make a case for it.

I literally left a feedback ticket this morning asking for contest updates he could provide, with the understanding that new ownership may be causing needs for other priorities. It was my first ticket I left in several years...had no idea this was coming a few hours later. End of an era.

This is the moment I realize I don't confidently know what common threads tie Yoshi games together beyond the character Yoshi.

I've only played three of them:

Yoshi's Cookie
Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's Story

Stacking-puzzlers ain't a common theme like in Cookie, nor do I think saving Baby Mario is like in Island. There's some platforming and eating going on in Island, Story, and I think some other games...but yeah, I guess I've lost sight of why people go to the series in more recent years.

Counterpoint: that bag of sand has been in two GotY-winning games since that poll, including one that got to the 2010-2019 GotD semi-finals and could have arguably been our #2 game here.

I'd probably lean Magus > Sandbag in a rematch too, but I'm not convinced.

Somebody I know sent me a picture of them winning at the Bottle Up game because they heard my story. They went on to look up videos about how to play and win, and then their fiance won a giant coyote of a prize (they both tried but only one won).

On one hand, this is extremely worthy of celebration and I'm glad to see big carna taken down a notch again. Get 'em!

On the other hand, my dad won the same prize several years ago. Their first big victory is second-generation old hat over here.

Drake got more than doubled by CATS in a battle for hardcore votes in the bottom 22% of that poll -- maaaaaybe Squall hurt Drake for more casual PS-votes (and Yoshi is a casual vote draw too who was in that poll), but I don't buy it enough. Uncharted 1 just hadn't caught on here at that time.

Also CATS got close to Ansen one-on-one, so CATS hypothetically could win a one-on-one match against someone weak enough.

Really, that's a pretty good GotY-resume on paper, and Uncharted 2 does have a few victories in contests like over Legend of Dragon and Street Fighter 4...but we know these haven't been great performances overall. Uncharted's never looked great in contests, and by extension Drake's looked rough too. Uncharted 1 was a weak game in comparison to the rest of the series, it seams (I haven't played them, and Drake as a dude-bro type of character didn't have GameFAQs audiences latching onto him or that game right away. That pretty much explains the CATS loss...

...yet, damn, it's still odd to see he got doubled by CATS and then make a few more contests and have his series doing this well despite that loss on his record. Drake's even got a movie now...and CATS beat that guy.

What I'm saying is CATS deserves a movie and I don't mean the movie "Cats."

I replayed Braid the other day. Still brilliant, but man Fickle Companion will wreck your time trials if you ain't careful.

I really don't care for the ending as far as the TV-ending goes, but Netflix made the final episode the live theatre performance and that was a great joy. That's my ending, and I respect it as what can be the only way to stop the other ending from being the actual ending.

Agreed that the show was generally best early on. Neutralizing Josh for awhile made me feel like the show lost its core purpose for a bit too long -- good to stray away sometimes, sure, just didn't work as well for me here. Still plenty of good little moments, songs, punchlines, and awkward looking around while waiting for the commercial break to kick in. The overall arcs just weakened over time.

Spoilers are cool, about to watch the last episode and can tell in its first few minutes I'm going to be very happy with it.

Fun show up to this point! Ups and downs at times, still a CW show...but Rachel Bloom's been great and this show is weird in the right ways for me. Pastor Brah is both low-key as a character and also maybe the best on the show.

These stuffed animals go for a lot more than $50 sometimes. I saw one in a similar size as the bull at Rite-Aid for $100 or $120 before. One of my prizes auctioned off for a non-profit to get $276 too, plus it had a $200 match for the grand total of $476 it made.

Yeah though, I dunno what the bulk rate is these fairs are actually getting per prize of this size. I've thought as low as $15 per item, but I've not gotten confirmation anywhere.

Fine episode, just got over-hyped to me when I was introduced to it.

Yeah, rerun that poll today and we're discussing three-way SSB LFF.

I think two-game series were inherently weakened by their lack of library in a Series Contest and so SSB as a series would arguably jump more than any other series.

Outside of LoZ, I think SSB has won the most GotY-awards here since the last Series Contest. It was previously a two-game series with no GotY-awards, and now it's a five-gane series with three GotY-awards. I don't see it having lost any hype-polls since then either at a quick glance, so people have stayed excited about the series in addition to its wins. SSBB/SSB4/SSBU has each beaten the best games from any other major series in their generations too besides LoZ.

Only real argument in my mind is that SSBB-hype heightened its 2006-performance enough to make its gains since then not as impressive. I can see that case, but I think it's gone up since then.

I would also add on top of BotW that we were also in the heat of major SSBU-hype. The Switch was huge in the moment of that contest...and while that lifts all boats, so to speak, Zelda's growth in strength from BotW could have been a multiplier effect alongside that. I wouldn't rule out her being weaker now than 2023 despite the Switch still doing well and TotK being another certified hit.
