I thought she was the voice actress, not the character model.

It's weird that they made a point to capture the same eyebrows, cheekbones, chin, and lips if she's not the model.

The character doesn't have to be attractive just because the actor is, but they made a point to make the character a less-attractive version of her VA.

First, why does the character model have to resemble the voice actress?

She's the voice actor? I thought she was the character model. It looked like they took the same features and uglied them up a bit.

Second, where have they "virtue signaled" anything? You're being weird again

It's actively downplaying looks.

If they hired someone average to be the model for an average-looking character, that's passive. They hired someone for a role and that's the end of it. But if they hire an attractive person, and they make her average-looking, they're actively striping away that beauty to show that they only care about the person underneath.

It's like ordering at Starbucks. You could order the Caramel Macchiato with soy milk or you could order "a vegan Caramel Macchiato" so that everyone within earshot knows you're vegan.

The style works for the movie and this take on the characters. As I said in in earlier post its going for a sort of "note book doodle" feel for the designs. They are suppose to be off putting and ugly.

Again this does affect any other version of these characters. The old shows still exist, the old movies still exist, the old and correct comics still exist. This is just one new take on these characters. And it was a good movie.

I haven't seen the film, so I can't really comment on how well the style fits the tone that they're going for.

That isn't what Mutant Mayhem was doing though. All the characters were ugly regardless of gender of species. It was just going for that type of style, of shows like Ren and Stimpy or Invader Zim. At least understand context before saying bullshit like that.

I have to be honest, talking animals aside, Ren & Stimpy is the last show on my mind when I'm watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This is sad. I've bounced around character names so many times that I've forgotten the current name of the story's primary antagonist. I realized there was a scene that would make a more logical introduction for her character than the flat intro that she otherwise would have received later in the story. But when I went to do a search for her name, I couldn't remember what it was. I'd thought about meaningful names, names that phonetically sound like words that would suggest her character, and names inspired by songs from bands that have sung about subjects with a loose connection to my story. Nothing really seems to fit.

I really need to sit down and write this. Instead, I've spent most of my free time on this three-day weekend watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 and YouTube video reviews. (Oh, and I beat Contra on NES.) I have made a couple of changes to my story. I feel I've given my opening scene the little mmph that it was missing and I've tied up one of my story's plot holes. But still, I should have accomplished more.

I hate using placeholder names. I always get that phantom fear that somebody's going to discover my outline and think that "Dave," "Alice," and "Mike" are the most creative names that I can come up with. Or else they'll read Dirt Cop, Valley Girl, and Alt Kid and somehow not connect the dots that those are placeholders meant to suggest the nature of the characters. (My story doesn't have an emo youth or a valley girl, btw. There is a dirt cop though.)

No, I want her position as the adult big sister of the team maintained. I was just as mad about Aunt May being young and hot in the MCU and Q being a teen prodigy in 007's Skyfall.

It's absolutely about changing the dynamic. But, then again, what is the dynamic? Her age, profession, body type, fighting ability, signature attire, ethnicity, and personality have gone through so many revisions that the most consistent thing about her is that her upper lip is usually depicted in an M shape reminiscent of the McDonald's arch. The character may as well literally be named GIRL because that's all that is consistent about her from one adaptation to the next. They could at least keep her in the same relative age group.

It bears mentioning that George Cukor was fired from Gone With the Wind for being gay. Clark Gable refused to work with a homosexual and had the director fired. George Cukor continued to coach Vivian Leigh without financial compensation.

Also, on the subject of no one remaining untouched by the film experience, a 14-year-old Spike Lee became interested in filmmaking as a social medium when he was the only Black student at a screening of the film and his teacher went on about what a great movie it was without ever addressing the film's racism.

That was a hell of an introduction from Robert Osbourne. You know, the way that he always appeared on the set, as if he never left it, I always imagined his introduction going something like this:

A werewolf movie was turned into a "Frankenstein" movie because of a promise to deliver a Frankenstein double feature. The movie has absolutely nothing to do with Frankenstein or his family -- though there is a Wolfstein in the film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA5LGCzrbVY

  • Monster A-Go-Go had no monster.
  • The Creature With the Atom Brain had no creature. (But an awesome Roky Erickson song.)
  • The Thing That Couldn't Die was a warlock that had his head severed. A human being is not a "thing." Thing is a nondescript term for that which you have no description for.
  • Dracula vs Frankenstein (a retitled Operation Terror) did not have Dracula and the Frankenstein monster fight. In fact, it didn't have Dracula -- just some random vampire with exactly one scene.
  • Women of the Prehistoric Planet (origin of MST3K's "Hi-keeba!" had a couple of women as part of a crew that landed on a tropical planet with a snake and a lizard. That's as prehistoric as it got. The women themselves were not native to the planet.
Werewolves on Wheels had two werewolves throughout the movie, only one of them road a motorcycle in wolf form. And he did so only in an attempt to run away. Oh, but wait, in the closing minute of the film, the rest of the bikers are turned into werewolves and we do indeed get about ten seconds of werewolves (plural) on wheels.

And Countess Dracula, a film about Elizabeth Bathory, only made sense in the closing minutes when, imprisoned and condemned to die, the Blood Countess is called "Countess Dracula" in condemnation. This doesn't make any sense. The historic Dracula was not a vampire and the novel wasn't written until centuries after Elizabeth Bathory.

Also minor maybe, but again I feel Harry's Aunt and Uncle were really unneeded conflicts.

Just seems like a different flavor of the evil step parent trope.

When J.K. Rowling submitted the first book for approval, she was told to make it more like Roald Dahl. I could be wrong, they feel like a product of that. The innocent kid being tormented by his horrible aunt, uncle, and cousin feels like something right out of a Dahl novel.

Alternatively, they may have always been a part of the story to make Harry sympathetic and build anticipation for when things become magical. Either way, it still feels like something you'd find in Matilda or James and the Giant Peach.
