This gave me an idea of doing a ranking of free games that I've played. Except I'd probably limit it to some arbitrary amount rather than every game ever. The hard part would be figuring out what I've played, like random stuff that I played one time 15 years ago. I'll probably never actually do it but I'll throw it on my pile of "unstarted ranking topic ideas".

Yup I saw a bunch of this on B8 and complained about it a few times before.

The entire trend of games with "meta twists" where people are like "it's not what you expect but I can't tell you anything about the game because that will spoil it!" is really annoying and overdone and gets worse every time another one of them becomes successful. Obviously everyone knows about it because it's the only thing that players ever talk about so people who haven't played the game basically get "pre-spoiled" by knowing that it's one of those types of games.

Walk This Way - It almost feels disrespectful to put the cover song in the top spot considering how well regarded the rest of the album is. But on the other hand, it is a very good cover.

I almost considered voting for Boundless Myth for a couple seconds until the vocals kicked in, and then it lost me and did not gain me back. On the flip side the vocals in Memoria of He don't kill it for me because I like the rest of it strongly enough.

Before listening to this album I couldn't name anything about The Cars. But this album had 3 songs that I recognized by title and then 2 more that I recognized by melody once they started. So that's a good signifier of its quality and popularity.

Good Times Roll - It's kind of funny that if you ignore this being a "famous song" and just try to analyze it musically, it's actually very... simplistic? Like in terms of lyrics and instrumentation. That's not even a bad thing and doesn't negatively impact it. Just an interesting thing that I never noticed before.

Fuck, I didn't realize how painful this matchup was. I was so preoccupied with setting up my song list as a nominator that I didn't step back to think about the matchup as a listener. I've been a fan of all the TMNT songs that I've heard since VGMC. But this is like, my game, my soundtrack, it would take a lot for me to vote against it. And unfortunately match 3 is the only one here that's actually in question. It might be closer if Whirlpool Tune wasn't my favorite of all the map themes in the game (which is funny because we were discussing using a few other songs but eventually settled on Whirlpool Tune). So yeah, when Splatoon 3 inevitably loses because nothing that I like can ever be popular, then I'll gladly be supporting TMNT in future rounds.

Interestingly I will note that if matches 1 and 2 were each the opposite matchup, I would have voted for Nocturnal over Green Area. Green was my least favorite of the 3 worm songs today, but Silver Bullet was my least favorite of all 6 match songs. I liked Nocturnal enough that I'd vote it over a lesser worm song.

I can tell that we're compatible because everything on the first page that people were mad about dropping too early was stuff that I didn't like listening to, and the word "synth" appears 6 times on this page alone (not including me using it right here).

Did a listen earlier in the week, although I was only half paying attention because I was playing something at the same time. Need to relisten and start the list, it shouldn't be too hard to rank these.

It was one of the few Wii games that was available on the Wii U eShop. So they're definitely open to porting it if a new avenue opens for it.

2 is one of the most unique, innovative, and interestingly-designed games ever made. I wish that every person who plays video games would play Wario Land 2.

3 is very high quality although certain aspects of it made me not like it as much as 2 when it came out. If it were a new game releasing today I would almost certain like it more. But unfortunately my perspective is tainted because it came out when I was like 11 and huge on WL2 at the time. I always feel guilty that I don't like it as much as I should, but I've been unable to change my opinion on it.

4 is a game that transcends the Wario franchise and should appeal to all people who like platformers. If this game came out on SNES in the early 90s it would be remembered today in the same vein as SMW, Yoshi's Island, DKC, etc. It is a top tier platformer, no more qualifiers needed. It's also the most "removed" from the Wario series so you really don't need to play any other games on this list in order to enjoy playing WL4.

Shake It, while similar to a watered down WL4 in terms of raw gameplay, is my pick for the best looking 2D game of all time. In an alternate reality when the 3D revolution never happened in the mid 90s, every video game ever made in the last 30 years would all look like this.

VB is kind of interesting to revisit if you've already played both 1 and 2 because you can see how technologically it's right between the two. It has elements of 1 returning and it has elements similar to 2 which you find actually originated in this game first. The game itself is just a slightly more advanced version of 1.

1 is a fine game, especially considering the context in which it was released (a Mario sequel where you literally play as the former villain instead of Mario at all), but it's the worst game in the series just by default. It's too archaic and lacks defining features that make any of the later games what they are.

Classic jam right here. The Okami soundtrack is filled with them, but this truly is one of the greatest. The inspiring melody mixed with all the traditional Japanese instrumentation and the occasional wolf howling all comes together beautifully to create something truly special.

Based on what regularly gets posted on B8, I don't like most Xenoblade music, but like 20% of it completely defies the other 80%, so I always listen to it out of curiosity just to see if it's one of the weird ones. Nothing too exciting in this batch. "Kaleidoscopic Core" sounds like the title of a song that I would like, but it turns out to just be "typical Xenoblade music". Not like its opposition is any better though.

I didn't vote last week but I'm glad that the Brazilian album won. That was gonna be my pick anyway.

While reading the song listing for this week's album I had the same reaction as Seanchan.

Forgotten Land has been an enigma to me since it came out. For over 20 years now I've always been a fan of Kirby, moreso than the average person than I met online. I was always in the position where I was speaking praises of it to people who basically weren't interested. It's in my top 10 series both for gameplay and for music. So when this game came out... I felt like an outsider for not liking it. This game, of all games, was the one that really struck a chord with non-Kirby players and got super hyped up. I rank this game among my least favorite Kirbys, again from both perspectives of gameplay and music. And even the songs that became the most popular among the KFL fans, some of them are the ones that I dislike the most from the rest of the soundtrack. Roche Limit is probably the least interesting final boss song in the entire Kirby series. I cannot see what everyone else sees in it. Every single thing about this game and its soundtrack is the opposite of how it usually is, and I'm once again in the minority, but on the wrong side this time.

Meanwhile it's up against a new discovery which I liked strongly enough to double it during nominations. None of the 3 matches here are even remotely close.

This is published by SEGA but I've never in my life heard it called a SEGA game. In fact, I don't think I've heard this game mentioned since it came out. If I wasn't able to find concrete proof this game existed I'd think it was all a fever dream.

This was the first game that I remember literally appearing in my Steam library unannounced. I certainly never bought it (or even heard of it) and I never (knowingly) clicked on any sort of thing to add it to my library for free. I was still pretty new to Steam at the time so when I saw it appearing on some page in the vicinity of my games I figured that it was being pushed as a recent promotion or something. Only later did I realize that this "list" that I was seeing was my actual games library and I actually owned the game permanently.

Who nominated this album? Can't they say whether or not they wanted the deluxe edition?

Since the album is already 16 songs I'd think that most people would want the shorter one unless the nominator specifically wanted the bonus songs.

Why would there need to be a new topic? The only important message is the one containing a link to the server, and that's still there.

Not really, it just means that younger people are the ones making the memes now. It's always been a thing that people around high school age start getting nostalgic about cartoons from their middle school and earlier years. Think about the types of shows that people posting about in 2003 when most GFers were teenagers. This is a natural shift.

I skipped the gen 5 topic because I procrastinated until the last day before deadline and then couldn't finish a functional list in time. My #1 ended up having the most #1s out of all Pokemon in the gen and I regret not being there to give it an even bigger lead.

I also wasn't here for gens 1-4.

Inviso (76) - It's cuteish I guess, but it's annoyingly hard to find in its base form, and that hurts it in my ranking.

Half of the reason why I ranked it so low is because it's so annoyingly common. It's not even that rare in Sword/Shield to begin with, but it was possibly the single most common Pokemon on Surprise Trade (felt like more people traded these than the route 1 Pokemon), and it's fucking everywhere in SV. Gone are the days when you have to go out of your way to find the mini form of a 600 BST Dragon type. Now you can't avoid it.
