Now that I finally have some time to post, it's time for my highly controversial opinion that likely very few people will agree with: I didn't like this year's overall field of songs as much as the past few years.

I felt this since the end of round 1. There weren't as many new songs that really grabbed me and made me root for them in future rounds. Round 1 was characterized by a lot of "this song is okay, nothing special" vs "I don't really like this song". Not many close matches either, and when there were, it was less "I like both of these, which one should I vote for?" and more "oh, I have to muster up some enthusiasm for one of these". The later rounds were filled with a bunch of "oh yeah, I voted against this song last time". I'm not sure how many of these songs I'll be listening to after the contest, I guess we'll have to see in the next few weeks/months which ones really stuck with me.

Of course this isn't a knock against any individual songs or the people who like them. I fully acknowledge that I'm in the minority here and most people I've seen have loved this year's field, so it worked out better for most people. Overall reception was good and participation was huge. And as usual thanks to anyone who hosted or helped for another well run contest. Even my opinions on the songs didn't stop me from participating, I think I managed to vote every day. Really just wanted to put this out there since I didn't have much time to comment on individual songs like I did last year.

Last year I ended the contest with the thought, "I hope Pizza Tower will be out by next contest so I can nominate something from it." Well it's not out, but it ended up being eligible anyway due to the rule changes. I'm still kicking myself for not nominating It's Pizza Time after both Hurry Up and Collapsing Rift got in this year.

Going back to my childhood: Nintendo.com used to have a directory for every currently released N64 and Game Boy game, with screenshots and a short blurb for each. I was just clicking on random game names at different parts of the alphabet and eventually I came across Wario Land 2. I didn't know what it was, or that it was related to Mario at all (I don't think I questioned the similarity to his name). But what struck me was how nice the graphics looked. So colorful, so detailed, and so intriguing to me when up until that point I was only playing mainstream video games from series that I already knew. It ended up being the first game that I bought with my own money.

The difference is that this Nintendo post is a formally published article and Metroidvania is a made up term. They (Nintendo) aren't trying to "replace" anything.

Your point doesn't apply here; it would only be relevant if, like, a group of gamers was trying to start a cultural movement to convince other people on the internet to start calling Metroidvanias "search actions". Then you could tell them that they were wrong.

I know this sounds weird, but Splatoon 2. I bought it after falling so in love with the soundtrack that I needed to hear the music in its original context. I don't play any shooters at all. I expected to struggle my way through single player and maybe fail a bit a multiplayer before getting what I needed and accepting that the game wasn't for me. What I got was one of the most engaging and fun multiplayer experiences that I've ever had, which became only the 4th game in my life which I played for >1000 hours.

I genuinely enjoy the colors of Cotton Candy better than any of the other options. However, I don't like the layout that it uses (GameFAQs v13), because I use RetroClassic instead (with additional CSS edits to improve the look). And the alternate color schemes don't look as good on RetroClassic.

I wasn't that into Dangan in the beginning of the contest, but it got better over time for me. Just a few days ago the tune popped into my head and it only took a few seconds to recognize what song it was and enjoy it. Axis Pillar is weird because it sounds very "video gamey BGM" to me, and not like something that I'd listen to standalone. But it seems like I should like it more than I do. I don't dislike it, but I don't have a desire to revisit it or anything.

At least there's a legitimate argument for "vote manipulation" due to a would-be Unknown Pollution voter intentionally not voting just to prevent the match ending in a tie when it was 1 away. Long story short, they changed some backend stuff in 2017 and now any unlisted videos posted before that time are being converted to private (i.e. no one can watch them). As a channel owner you have the ability to opt out of this change to keep your unlisted videos watchable. I strongly suggest that you opt out of this if you have any unlisted videos that you still share around (as in, you keep them unlisted to hide the links but you still post the links publicly on other sites). Also if you happen to have any links to unlisted videos from accounts who haven't logged on in years, you might want to download them because they'll be gone in 2 days and we might be losing pieces of internet history.
