As for the argument, this forum is "dying" because every forum is dying. I'm tired of having to say this to crowds of people who think their forum is a special case of death unlike any others because of X, Y and Z. No man, text got replaced by images, eventually by videos, and then by short videos and the age audience everyone is pursuing is at least 20 years older than the one who cares about a site like this. Allen could have done this and that but the only way to save this site from decay would have been to turn it into something completely different, like a social media app, and maybe that would have sucked (I mean all social media apps suck rn). The things we like simply don't match with the things that attract gen alpha.

If anything, I feel like even the idea that forums are dying is starting to feel dated, because it's been a while people started complaining about it, and the reality is most forums did not die. They stabilized and became niche, and this seems to be one of such cases. Some communities I knew got nuked out of orbit, usually without no warning, either because if drama the admin didn't want to deal with, server costs that no longer could be paid, or because some idiot blew a fortune on a site and then learned it wasn't that profitable. Those things are always a risk (heck, the last one recently happened to freaking Twitter), but as long as they don't, I feel like this place will just keep limping until its userbase dies of old age. And honestly, that's not that bad.

I responded to people rebutting me by misrepresenting my point with 28-38 of those repetitions. Not my fault b8 is full of people who intentionally misread arguments so they can think they won them. I was actually content to leave it at "this guy sucks, helped kill Gamefaqs, and good riddance though shame we won't get any more contests now"

Not really, it just means that younger people are the ones making the memes now. It's always been a thing that people around high school age start getting nostalgic about cartoons from their middle school and earlier years. Think about the types of shows that people posting about in 2003 when most GFers were teenagers. This is a natural shift.

I don't really have much to say on Allen other than he tried to rally mods for an outcome in the contests on Reddit and then pretended it was his wife instead in order to avoid complications with sponsorship prizes. He never made a good impression.

Uhh it wasn't dunking it was actually my main point.

To actually address what you said with more words since you think I was just dunking, I don't really think the contests needed experimentation, they just needed to be run fairly and actually run. That's literally it. Beyond that it was important to use the traffic the contests brought in to unveil new features and stuff which was literally never done.

Most of the changes he made was stuff that only people on GameFAQs cared about. Allen caring about "new winners" and stuff wasn't good business. That just showed his fanboyisms coming out. Three ways were the illusion of experimentation not actually a meaningful variation on 4 ways.

I don't know man, it just seemed like he's been fighting a losing battle since the last decade or so. When it comes to gaming, it's really hard to beat stuff like Reddit and Youtube.

I think the real problem is our userbase. It's awesome that GameFAQs has a board for like every game ever but they are also among the most hostile places I've encountered. Board 8 is one of the rare exceptions here.

I think that type of atmosphere was expected in the early days of the internet, but I don't imagine many people would want to engage with it when there are now other options, especially if they were not part of that initial Internet wave.

It's not a funeral for Allen, but for some people, they're mourning the loss of what this site used to be. We all quietly knew it, but Allen's resignation forced us to confront it.

There probably would have been a lot more anger ten years ago, back when this place was a bigger part of our lives, and we were much more excited about new contests. I agree that most of us have realized within the past couple years that the GameFAQs Contests are over, and we've at least partially accepted it. But Allen's resignation is the most "official" confirmation of it yet, so wishing him well is also a way for us to acknowledge this, and thus, get a little closure.

To that end, I know that this may be asking for too much, but I think we'd all appreciate Allen's (now unofficial) opinion as to whether he thinks he contest era is truly over. It's not like any of us are expecting an optimistic opinion, but just hearing "yeah sorry, I think we're done" from a source like @SBAllen would help us close the door and make some final projects (maybe a final podcast like already mentioned, retiring the Stats Topic, etc.).

The actual difference is that only you, Smurf, and a couple of others are calling him the murderer. Like we all get that you believe he's the murderer, but most of us aren't willing to go that far with it. And no matter how much you shout that he's the murderer, I don't think you're going to make any headway in convincing others that he is.

But you just keep on shouting if that's what you feel like you need to do, I guess. You say you were willing to let it go with a hit and run murder accusation, but unless you actually believed everyone would just say, "wait you're right," and you'd get zero pushback, you were never willing to just let it go.

I think if people just said "I disagree but I can see why you'd think that" or "I disagree but you do you" or even just "I disagree" and not "you're saying this but blah blah blah *makes up some terrible counter argument to try and say I'm wrong or claim I'm saying something I never said*" I would have left it as is.

The fact is I AM right or Allen got a ton of money to basically do nothing and it was not his job to manage the site and he was just a figurehead. Either way Allen is not worth being sad over. The site, sure.

But I don't care whether you're right, and I stopped caring hundreds of posts ago. If all you want is to be right, then keep at it. If you want people to care that you're right, then I'd suggest waiting for a time and place when people are actually ready to have that discussion of how much of this is Allen's fault, but it ain't right now. People want to be bummed out, reminisce about better times, etc. They don't want to be angry and blame somebody for it, not yet anyway.

Personally I also feel like he's done a lot better as an admin in the last 10 years. I don't really have any complaints for the 2014-2023 time period, but I can think of several for 2013 alone.

1. Allen objectively sucked (the site is dying when it was once thriving, he ran the site) at running this site and that should be out there regardless of whether it's a popular opinion
2. People are trying to say I should stop talking because it's not a popular opinion-- this is me telling people to fuck off with that way of thinking. Go to reddit where you can just downvote stuff you don't like into non-existence. This is not a funeral and I'm not going to have assholes gaslight me because they don't agree with me.

I think you should move on because you've been on reruns for quite a while now. We're just arguing in circles at this point, but if you feel the need to continue to shout into the aether just because you can and nobody is going to stop you, then don't be surprised that no one actually wants to listen to you. In this case the "problem" is "why does no one else realize Allen sucked at running the site" and you're all trying to convince me that it's taboo to speak of the site admin in a negative way because he just quit a job he was paid for and that I'm being such a huge jerk for bringing up issues NOW. That I used to be a nice person and some trauma happened and I'm an ass now so nothing I can say could possibly be right I'm just being devil's advocate. Go Google it and read examples with an open mind.

Trust me I know what it is. You all can redefine it so you can pretend you dont do it in arguments all the time here. I've been here longer than most of you and I'm completely within my rights to be upset that Allen is being praised here because I do like this site for whatever reason and I wish we had a motivated admin to keep it relevant.

It's manipulative for sure-- doesnt work because I dont give a crap about what any of you who are trying to do it think about me other than like Leon who I do actually respect and am annoyed he's acting like this. And all you can say is "well we don't know what he tried" and you're right we don't. But we do know what he did try and when/how he tried it. And that'll be the end for me. You can get it the rest of the way to 500 by yourselves. Go get your circle and sing about all the good things about Allen. Then repeat the same thing like 150 times because you can't actually name enough stuff to fill the topic.

Believe it or not, I'm actually trying to say these things for your benefit. You talk about people siding with arguments based on attitude, but attitude does matter, whether you like it or not. Timing matters, too, if you actually want to have a fruitful discussion that goes somewhere. There's more to a discussion than just being right.

There will be a time and place where this discussion can be productively had. You're not hearing me sing the praises of Allen beyond me thanking him for the years he gave to this site. I do think he cared about this site regardless of the quality of the job he did, and I'm recognizing that. I don't think he wanted it to end this way.

You can be 100% right about something and argue it with absolutely perfect logic, but still be in the wrong because you are failing to acknolwledge the feelings and wants of people you are talking to.The human/social component of a conversation is always important, no matter what the subject is and who is right/wrong about it.
