No. Accountability matters. Sometimes "let people be positive" is not good policy and I don't think I should be silenced just because I'm making some people feel less positive. It's not something to be positive about unless you're happy with how the website has played out.

I mean Steiner, the dude who lives on Discord instead of posting here, clearly loves how it all played out so what do I know.

I'm just saying it is fruitless to continue this argument. Nobody will convince you to be grateful, and nobody is going to change their mind and take back their gratitude.

It was the site never changing that made the site fall into irrelevance. At the time we were sold to gamespot gamespot was still a thing that mattered. I would say this site was able to be made relevant as late as even 2013. (That was the Draven contest right) That was probably our last gasp in terms of getting new eyeballs. Undertale wasn't even a blip in comparison.

Yeah, "GameFAQs becoming modern" and "GameFAQs keeping its boards as anything resembling what they are now" seem like statements that'd be at odds with each other. It's hard to imagine a whole bunch of stuff, like this small community board, wouldn't have been completely gutted as part of a total site redesign.

But maybe Lopen is actually mad that Board 8 wasn't erased a decade ago. Maybe he just wants to be free but doesn't have the willpower to quit us on his own.

People don't come here for the social elements, they stay for them.

Redesign the Frontpage and how the FAQs work, and get us modern message board stuff when they're actually new and it's fine I think.

Discussion boards can be roughly what they are now, they aren't where the site failed at this moment though Id argue we get everything pretty late (aside from archiving all the game boards-- that actually removed a ton of charm to the board hunting culture and actively suppressed discussion). The guides and reviews and other stuff related to games are where the site failed and had a ton of room to be improved, and that's what brings people here.

it's still here. most sites I was on in high school aren't (and the ones that are, are similarly on the ropes). that's a passing grade at least in my book.

I can see value in a "lessons learned" type of topic for both people grateful and unhappy with SBAllen's tenure as a potential resource for the next lead administrator to reflect upon. Somebody could make that topic and I would at least follow and probably participate. That said, this topic doesn't feel like the place for some of the responses it's getting like from Lopen. Feel your feelings, tell your truth, all that! But it's clear most people are congregating here with a different tone and purpose. A separate topic more committed to reflection and future ideas for the site would probably be more appropriate and helpful instead of defensive like it feels like it's become here.

I said my appreciation elsewhere already so I won't harp on it again, but thanks SB for trying as long as you did and caring about our interests where you could.

I honestly don't know what I would do if this board went away. I've got 20 years of relationships here, and the idea of trying to start anew elsewhere doesn't really appeal to me.

I guess I'd spend more time with my family or something.

Weird, I just interacted with MrMegaPhoenix the other day, mentioned SBAllen, and he played dumb about who I was talking about, but he was probably just trolling as usual. Or maybe his memory is terrible, that was a long time ago...

Okay, so maybe the users are the problem after all. Endless trolling at the height of the console wars did damage the site's rep as others were rising up.

Unfortunately there really isn't anywhere else, I've yet to find a single good forum to actually make friendships, it's all either chat rooms or more social media focused forums like reddit or fb

But what will I do when I need to make a list with writeups?

Maybe I'll read them to my son as bedtime stories.

Same. I don't even really think of you all as "friends" or anything. But I do think of the board as like a weird bar/hangout spot with familiar faces, if that makes sense. I really hope this place doesn't disappear. As much as we might want to blame people for not changing/evolving with the times, I also like how this place hasn't (for the most part).

Kids have found a bunch of ways to make friends on the internet in various communities. It's probably way easier than it was than when we were kids, to an almost dangerous extent. We're just not kids anymore.

We are quite literally the bar filled with regulars who refuse to leave and side eye anyone we don't recognize.

Also a relevant comparison in that bars are rapidly dying out across much of the world.

Why would people think that this board specifically would be deleted while the rest of the site stays untouched? Either they shut down the entire site at once (probably without warning), or they refuse to touch anything on it.

I would like to reiterate this question.

"If there aren't going to be any more contests, what's the point in having a contests board?" is what came to my mind. Boards related to games or movies/tv or PotD or whatever still have some purpose whereas this board could be considered - by some person(s) - to have no purpose.

Though since I made my original post I actually browsed through the community and social boards and wow there is a lot of crap out there so it makes me feel better about the potential for our continued existence, lol.

it's much closer to your favorite restaurant shutting down and people wishing the owner the best instead of saying "if you'd done better my favorite restaurant would be flourishing right now. you fool. you absolute dunce."

except in this case the restaurant isn't even shutting down. the owner is just retiring.

It's more like my favorite restaurant got a new cook who sucked ass and did not ever try any new recipes when trying to replicate the recipes of the previous owner and no one new ever came to the restaurant and it went out of business.

Yeah I would be happy if they retired and would tell them that they ran a once great restaurant into the ground because they didn't change things that werent working. The restaurant I liked is just a building with regulars I know at this point-- I certainly don't come here for the food and no one else does here either. We just come to chat.

Allen tried to change the contests pretty significantly though, much more than CJayC, who ran the same contest every time. He was willing to try new things with them.

Like you can argue that the changes weren't for the better or that he didn't make enough of them, but it's hard to argue he wasn't willing to change in that regard.

like Allen was a visible guy we had direct contact with, there is some personal connection to him

what weirdo would be more likely to thank the shadowy figure who handles the money than the guy you know who actually runs the place
