None of that is mutually exclusive, in fact I'd say the fact that they don't stick around long to be part of the point.

And really it's Mongal that's the sticking point here. It's hard to stress how little sense it makes that she's here and how much MORE sense it makes if she's a Gamora expy. She's a jobber in the comics, but a jobber on par with Superman and Wonder Woman, so no real reason to be on the Squad. She and Gamora even have similar backstories - both are daughters of an intergalactic despot with a sibling rivalry. Her existence implies her much more notorious father and brother exist, which doesn't even matter for the DCEU. It's a pretty good joke!

So I'm reading that Yondu's actor plays Savant in the movie and Mantis's actor cameos in the strip club scene. Now I'm wondering if the oddball choices like Mongal and Weasel are specifically meant to be digs at GotG (as stand-ins for Gamora and Rocket). Maybe I'm overthinking it, but in that case who are the stand-ins for Drax and Starlord? TDK and Pete Davidson?

edit: okay apparently Gunn's brother does mocap for both Rocket and Weasel, and Bautista was almost cast as someone, so I am definitely not overthinking it

humanity is fucked, enjoy the sunset

Also humanity is absolutely not fucked. That's ridiculous. But lest you think I'm approaching this from an optimistic place I'll spell it out for you. The rich and powerful have enough resources and tech to ensure their survival. What's actually going to happen is the rise of ecofascism. Rich nations will abandon the global poor and millions or billions of people will die, but "humanity" is not going to go extinct. Another part of the way forward is getting people to realize that climate change is not going to affect everyone equally and this is not a problem for humanity as a species. We aren't all in this together and ironically the people who got us into the mess will be the most likely to survive what's coming.

I don't really care about what Rand Paul has to say on the subject, because he is a fascist and is in that group.

how do you expect to convince enough people about a threat that is still in the abstract

First of all, it's not in the abstract, we can literally see the effects in real time as extreme weather, climate deaths, and climate migrations increase. I've talked to rural conservatives who don't think anything can be done (or just don't want to do anything) and even they admit they see the current effects because it's so blisteringly obvious. It's really not in question anymore. The fight is over what to do about it.

Secondly I didn't say it would be easy, or even that it would happen. I'm being honest about the path forward. If it does happen it would require an immense amount of organization and education, and also to just stop dancing around the issue.

Pretty good! I think I'd put it over GotG2 as far as Gunn goes, though I am not nearly as high on that movie as people here seem to be. I basically only care about Yondu and Nebula in it so eh. This movie having a different vibe is enough to put it over for me. Bloodsport and Peacemaker were pretty enjoyable and Ratcatcher was great. Harley was great too, although I think the movie could have used more of her and integrated her better.

My only major complaint is the initial big massacre scene felt like a copout, especially with Boomerang getting shafted and Mongal punching way below her weight class. Captain Boomerang is such a waste, man. I was expecting more of an ensemble cast that gradually dies over the course of the movie but it's instead a pretty standard team movie until the end. Which I should have expected based on the trailers but...I probably would have enjoyed this more without the trailers giving so much away anyways. Ah well.

SO many games tend to slap RPG elements on nowadays that I really can't consider that to be a defining characteristic of Metroidvanias. This reminds me of the "soulslike" argument around Sekiro where people fight about if it's the same type of game as Dark Souls and Bloodborne if they strip out the RPG elements. The line is super blurry. Also thinking of the new Assassin's Creed games which are considered RPGs because they piled enough elements on top of an open-world action game to get that way. I guess what I'm saying is that as time went on that aspect of Castlevania got way less unique.

Also I wouldn't call Metroidvania its own genre.

What is then it? A set of unrelated characteristics? A vibe?

For the record I think foolmo's comments about genre tags are the way to go. Too many games have multiple influences from multiple genres and start to defy the narrow boxes one genre puts them in, so picking one genre is really only useful for quick convenience (which would make "Metroidvania" and "Soulslike" useful genres as broad descriptions).

I do like "exploration action" and "exploration platformer" as an alternative though. "Search action" is technically true but feels blander and less precise so I've never liked it.

Really enjoyed the first season though! My only complaint is that the worldbuilding got a little messy, but it's more focused on episodic stuff overall so it's not a huge problem. Eda is so good, Hootie is hilarious, and the animation really pops when they want it to.

- strictly better Shock
- Surveil Opt
- unconditional 2 mana instant black removal (with a drawback against aggro)
- Zombie version of a Modern Humans staple
- flashback which tends to be inherently strong

Now, I'm not gonna judge the entire set by so few cards but these kind of blow away my expectations from the lower power of more recent sets

Depends entirely on how it's implemented. I agree that Nintendo isn't really consistent on what they do with it. Snap seemed like a full game so more stuff is a nice surprise.

Something like Animal Crossing is a more interesting example. I've seen a lot of complaints about how that's being handled. It isn't exactly that the game wasn't fleshed out at launch but it was missing a lot of series staples that have been put on an incredibly slow drip-feed.

Or Mario Party - launching without online multiplayer only to add it two and a half years later is just very weird. That one didn't seem planned though.

Maybe, but Democratic voters generally think the Supreme Court is doing a good job.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/08/04/poll-public-opinion-of-supreme-court-sags-over-past-year-502309

Well yeah I'm not surprised by this. Americans tend to respect institutions, even ones that are less democratic like the SC. And approval for Congress, a "democratic" one is usually in the trash (I'd argue our dysfunctional legislation system contributes to most of the Court's problems but I'm getting off-track). There is a lot going on in this poll, but the bottom line is that the Court is politicized but has tried to avoid partisanship, and so the institutional failings are pretty inside baseball.

I'm not really trying to advocate for direct democracy either. Part of why representative democracy exists is because government do have to do unpopular things. It's just that the inherent structure of our government is unrepresentative and is growing more undemocratic, and the Supreme Court's job is to uphold that structure. I guess I could say the real issues are with the US Constitution (which probably also has a high approval rating), but it's definitely harder to change that than to ignore the court responsible for enforcing it.

You would think (haha) that there's an eventual breaking point, right? It's one thing to have, say 60% R reps vs. 47% R votes, and quite another to have 75% R reps for 42% R votes. But I guess you'd never need to have it be that "bad" as all that's truly important is 50%+1 reps.

Depends on what you mean by "breaking point." As the article points out, you need new laws to prevent this from a legal standpoint. Without those, there is no breaking point - the system is working as intended. The Supreme Court is pro-gerrymandering as long as it's not discriminatory against protected classes, and even then you must PROVE it was done to discriminate as opposed to gain political advantage, which is fine. Republicans will cement their advantage and unlike Democrats I don't see them going "hmm we are winning too much now let's dial it back."

If by "breaking point" you mean "the populace gets fed up and starts doing political violence" then maybe! It already happened once this year so we're part of the way there!

We unironically should ignore the Supreme Court on evictions, the vaccine mandate, and other things. As mentioned, our system of government is not a democracy. Parts of it DO need to be overthrown: the anti-democratic parts. There is very little to be gained by working within a system that so far has refused to adequately reform itself. When the rules are literally being used to make the country less democratic and more fascist, there's not much reason to respect the rules.

It's actually cool and good to break the law for good reasons.

Any other alternative recommendations for something glowy that isn't going to involve Bozja or Eureka? PREFERABLY blue.

For the record, they decided this expac that it was too much work to go back and retroactively come up with new gear models for new jobs, so the only ones you can get are the shiny primal weapons they added THIS expac, and even then I don't think it's all of them. I think that limits you to Stormblood trials. The Moonlit weapons are quite good IIRC, but most of the 4 Lords ones are...not. It's slim pickings, my Dancer has a half-completed Bozja relic because for a long time that's all I could get.

Or you can just clear The Epic of Alexander (Ultimate), ez

I think I'm going to go after the Knights of the Round weapons for my default glamour. Won't be able to get to the game for a while, are any if the items required for crafting going to be an issue? I assume it's not going to be easy, since even if it's old and craftable content, it still glows.

Yes, all of the glowy primal weapons require a rare drop from their respective Extreme trial. While that fight MIGHT be soloable at 80 (might need a healer or tank), this one is still incredibly obnoxious due to the extremely long KotR phase. I would check the MB for prices on the finished item as well as the primal mat, because the weapons are cheaper than the item from time to time.

I dont remember the rest of the mats, likely just timed node and tome items as usual, but the above part will give you the most trouble.

Edit: actually no nevermind, those are one of the very few that actually don't need a drop lol. Looked it up on Garlandtools. The worst thing is probably the battlecraft demimateria which need desynth spam or market board.

Rindo's main personality traits seem to be that he's incredibly indecisive, pessimistic, and mostly introverted, which is where the mistrust stems from. But this changes when he turns back time and he gets a large confidence boost. He's kind of a weird character, and I dont know yet how much of it is intentional and how much of it is writing around that gameplay gimmick. So far he pales in comparison to Neku who went through two different arcs in two weeks, but that's probably unfair.

Fret and Nagi though, I do love. I'd put them under Joshua but above Shiki (who, let's face it, got a raw deal in the original). These two have a good dynamic and I like how the setup of the Game allows them to have a core cast this time around. (W2D3 spoilers) I do also like how different party members have different relationships with the 4th spot and how Fret and Beat were able to immediately become friends

I can't really deny that the returning cast are spotlight stealers though. Every time someone shows up I start pointing at the TV like the Leonardo DiCaprio meme

Right, that means you need more stringent pandemic measures than we do now. Whether that's locking down again or vaccine passports or even a vaccine mandate. But this "oh well it's their own fault" is some weak shit, no better than sacrificing grandma to the economy at the start of the pandemic.

And I'm talking purely at a policy level here. I'm not asking anyone to have empathy towards the antivaxxers or feel responsible for their health or anything. Just to recognize that people dying en masse is still fucking bad, and if people aren't taking precautions than societal structure should take that into account. I would say either Emerald or Innocence have the least changes. Both should be pretty easy by now too, although Emerald is on the current gear tier. Innocence is a launch trial and is mostly dodging aoes anyways. Ruby is also fairly unchanged although there are a couple major things to look out for. The other fights have more significant changes although most of them are significantly outgeared (and I never got around to the current EX which is something I will do when I resub for the events so I can't speak to that one).

The good news is that you don't really need a huge primer for EX trials. The 15 minute videos or a text guide are generally enough to suffice. If you are comparing to savage, they are a tier below those in terms of complexity, and multiple tiers under the most complex savage fights (4/8/12s).

edit: A tangent but speaking of text guides does anyone know a good updated resource for them? Saltedxiv used to be my go-to and it still has most everything from the current expac, but after the community drama ran the site manager out of the game it doesn't look like anyone has stepped up to take over, and the Balance has barely gotten its shit together since. So I'm not sure what things are gonna look like come Endwalker. It's a real shame.

It's a really good structure to add more, really. Could easily have bi-yearly sequels with totally different stories. Would be way better than a bunch of Assassin's Creeds.

It's less that because I do want more, but also I have the understanding that the initial playthrough of the game is impossible to replicate. You can't do "Outer Wilds 2" now that I know all the tricks the first game used and have the same effect unless you create some bizarro alien physics engine. Republicans were never going to go in favor of student loan forgiveness. It's a welfare policy and you can't do those perfectly equitably. You could forgive student loans and institute free tuition and you'd still get people whining about how they paid their loans. You could send out repayment for those loans and people would complain that now you're giving money to people who don't need it and whine about the debt. Politicians will come up with any excuse to not do something they just don't want to do and there will always be people to buy into it.

Also, we don't NEED input from Pelosi or Republicans as much as she wants us to think. She's covering for Biden.

No, tab targeting is just esoteric no matter what. Just spam the button and pray.

The trailer is purposely cryptic but it does show snippets of random areas while hinting at the main conceit of what it's supposed to be about. The video description also indicates some of the premise and how it will be implemented in-game. I think it's fine but if you have to ask I would probably err on just not watching it.

This game really does not need an expansion, everything in the galaxy is so intricately connected to everything else. I can't seem them phoning this in though so I am really curious to see what this will end up being.

They introduced it on stream by saying "you probably have questions like 'how?' and 'why?' Those are good questions." and then playing the trailer so yes, I think they are very self-aware about this

60% of the country approves of legalizing marijuana, politicians won't do it. Is this the voters fault? Do we need to change more hearts and minds? Medical marijuana has a 90% approval rate, but is still federally illegal. Still too low?

The idea that "political capital" is a finite resource that gets spent makes zero sense. You gain goodwill with voters by doing things for them. You gain goodwill with politicians you need to support you by offering them something in return. It's only because we have so many politicians where the "something in return" happens to be "doing nothing at all."

The majority of people in America would much rather shut down all public schools than eliminate every police department.

I'm really tired of this bad faith interpretation of police reform that Democrats are using here and you keep buying into. This is why I specifically said it wasn't about the slogan but about electoral strategy. They are intentionally trying to create animosity between the activist left and the moderate base of the party. They say that this is to convince moderates and conservatives but the only people who are going to believe them are diehard dems already! No one else could possibly fall for this!

If we must, I'll illustrate from a policy perspective. Police abolitionists are not trying to Thanos snap police out of existence without warning. There are popular major police reform ideas that both defund activists and moderates can agree on. Democrats do not run on these policies or try to sell them to the base. Instead they insist on running denial campaigns that no one could possibly believe. Why?

The goal is to have Republicans waste time by having them defend the attack.

See: Pretty much every Republican attack made against Democrats.

They don't have to waste any time defending the attack. They pile up police endorsements anyways, without even trying. They will play the "I am rubber and you are glue" strategem and say that Dems are the ones who want to defund the police, which is what they were going to do anyways.

Again: who is going to believe this? How is this a reasonable strategy at all? If the point is to take control of the narrative they have to try way harder than that.

Is Titan's raidwide damage not magical? Stoneskin was rarely used midfight and DRK didn't exist to apply INT down (rip old Delirium) so I can't imagine it would make a ton of difference except to the tank. But I have zero idea how the altered potency values, defense ratings, and damage formula change things if at all. Melees used to have garbage magic defense, dunno if that's still the case.

I do know healers lost Virus (now Addle for casters) and correct me if I'm wrong but melee dps now have Feint as a physical debuff where they used to have nothing?
