I think this is 100% correct, and it's not even something I strictly blame reviewers for - they have to play shitloads of games, so the stuff that is going to stand out to them is stuff that they haven't seen before, even if "the same thing again" is exactly what I want. This is always a mismatch between critic and consumer values that you need to account for when reading a review, although a good reviewer will take this into account of course. But I think the fact that this game is really well-produced and different, in a time where the Ace Attorney series is now regarded as an all-time great rather than a mere curiosity, creates a perfect storm for good reviews.

I think this is true but looking at the metacritic page, the sequels aren't really getting dragged down for more of the same! Most of the games are at 81 (which is uncanny but also very good!). The three under 80 are 2, AJ, and AAI, and even those are all 76+. The biggest thing here is that the original trilogy games have user reviews a full point higher than the critic score. Interestingly, that gap is way smaller for the collected version, suggesting less people cared to review the rerelease or that the cult fanbase cooled off. But overall the critics have been super fair to the series.

So in addition to the fresh direction and higher production, I also have to wonder if the reviewers include more dedicated fans this time around. Some of the reviews read that way, and I have to wonder too if the scores are higher because they're psyched to finally get these games after such a long drought and want to encourage Capcom to do more.

The demands include an end to forced arbitration (victims can now seek legal action against the perpetrators) and to hire a third party to oversee the HR reporting on harassment claims. So no it's not a literal mea culpa but any abusers standing in solidarity with these goals are helping themselves get owned. There's always gonna be shitty people in any movement, this entire thing is about being able to do something about that.

The ARR Hard primals were endgame when the game launched I think. So min ilevel is gonna set you to i50 or some cursed shit.

It SHOULDN'T take multiple lockouts but it's Titan, people still sometimes wipe on it in trial roulette to this day.

Well they did have that Pioneer Masters set that was supposed to get staples into the format quickly without having to put entire real sets in. That's canceled now, but I have to wonder if this set is going to end up having at least some of the implemented cards. And yes, having GOOD draft sets would help. This is the problem. They don't have time to program in every jank limited card from each set, and making Remastered sets requires balancing a draft format (and so far has been worse - not to mention in comparison to new sets with much better limited formats than most older Pioneer sets do).

But the bottom line here is that Historic no longer fulfills its original purpose. And to be fair I think that's fine. It was meant to just be a place to play rotated cards, but the thing about "Standard+" formats like that is if that's all it is no one will play it. Historic wasn't progressing quickly enough to differentiate itself, and anyways was still dominated by tons of powerful Standard cards that people hated. It's GOOD that it has a unique identity now, but if you want a "normal" non-rotating format it basically has to be Pioneer because a "normal" Historic is still gonna be an Eldraine format for a long time.

I'm not truly concerned about the random effects, I think this is a small test run for a reason and if there's anything that's problematic they'll ban it. If anything, I'm more concerned about the tutors!

I've seen more talk about Pioneer today than I have in a year and I think it's clear at this point they still need to just support Pioneer and add it to the client.

You're not wrong, but with WHM the abilities are so straight forward that you can just completely melt into the effects and never have to think a out it at all, even during the leveling process.

This is also true with SCH, because a lot of the weirdest abilities are relatively useless during leveling so when you get a button that actually does something you go "oh thank god"

Honestly I think all three healers have extremely unitinitive names and terminology for their skills (what the fuck is an afflatus and an indulgence stack), but AST easily takes the cake.

This card creates such dumb board states. Its one of my favorite cube cards. Unfortunately a 6 mana clone is just way too expensive and removal is too good these days.

Love Progenitor Mimic, played it in my Bant flicker EDH list. My favorite is the interaction where if you blink it and have it enter as a copy of one of the tokens it makes, it gains the additional instance of the clone clause. Because you know, it wasn't stupid enough already.

Mephiles is one of my favorite characters of all time. The entire concept of "Mephiles is the dark version of Shadow who was the dark version of Sonic" is just so... so wonderful. Like, I have a massive bias in favor of the ole 'like main character but darker' archetype & applying that someone who was already that achetype creates something that basically could not appeal to me more than it does. A fragment of a God manifesting as a crystalline hedgehog of darkness? I love this.

This is actually a great point. I honestly do love the Sonic series's commitment to trying to out-edge Shadow the Hedgehog. It's legitimately incredible. They have done this not just once with Mephiles but twice now with Infinite in Sonic Forces (a game whose plot is legitimately MUCH worse than Sonic 2006 btw) and it's so stupid in the best ways every time.

I think (and this is legitimately why the MCU works so well) that people are generally underestimating the degree to which the casual viewer cares about the deep lore while also overestimating how hard it is to explain it to them!

Heavensward unequivocally has the best postgame story although I wouldn't call it better. Also funny in retrospect because it took us three years to fully understand the greatness we were dealing with.

It's nearly impossible for me to evaluate this game's story. The plot is bad, but it's not miserably bad, it's mostly just normal bad with a handful of really stupid parts and major plotholes. But also - Sonic 06 is basically the "The Room" of video games, and it is legitimately enjoyable as a bad game experience. But much like The Room, it's not so much the plot doing that as much as the presentation and...the general Sonic 2006 experience.

Let's go with a 4. it's clearly below average with some parts that are bad in a funny way but it doesn't quite cross over into so-bad-it's-good territory as a whole.

I'm kind of into the idea of Historic as an experimental digital format, although it's kind of a nightmare from a wildcard economy perspective and I'm not sure if WotC actually knows what they're doing wrt game balance...but it's exciting!!!

So it has leaked (via a article WotC accidentally posted early) that in August they're doing an Arena-only Jumpstart 2: Historic Horizons. And it's going to consist mostly of cards from both Modern Horizons sets, plus 31 completely new Arena-only cards.

I now understand why they were so hesitant to axe Brainstorm. They want to get fucking WILD, huh.

Yep. Each expac basically has 3 tiers of gear. And if you haven't experienced it, the difference it makes is VERY significant for endgame content.

You'll learn all about it in Endwalker when you have to fight the final boss and do extreme trials before the weekly tomestone and raid gear even exists!

Fights are always designed for minimum item level, that's the point of the feature. Everything has a requirement you have to meet to get in, what min IL does is set everything you have to that baseline. It changes by duty, it's not a set standard.

It's interesting he's actually doing it this way because it's as close to a "pure" experience you can get (minus job and battle system changes) and it's not something that's really done anymore.

It would be interesting to see him handle, say, pre-nerf Heavensward raids at min IL (for history, Gordias and Midas were so notoriously difficult in a time before cross-world parties existed that it nearly killed the raid scene), but since they changed most of those fights I guess I'll have to settle for Ultimates.

I also agree with you that it's not a USEFUL comparison to make most of the time, but when people are trying to directly compare them I think it's warranted.

Can we please kill this fucking meme that Trump had good foreign policy? He didn't. The Trump admin's foreign policy was mostly characterized by:

- weakening our ties to allies
- reaching out to become closer to authoritarian regimes (most of which didn't even stick because Trump would piss them off later)
- trade embargos for nebulous reasons
- supporting foreign coups
- literally everything that happened (and still is) at the US-Mexico border
- yelling VERY LOUDLY about how you're not a warmonger while drone strikes increase and the state "subtly" tries to manipulate Iran into a war

Please enlighten me as to what is good about this (don't, it's rhetorical)

If you want to argue that Biden's foreign policy is largely a continuation of Trump's then sure, that's mostly true and the improvements are generally so marginal that I don't really care to argue about them literally being the same. But please stop acting like Trump's was GOOD and Biden is worse.

Sat in a queue for minstrel's ballad: Ultima's Bane for a little over an hour while I got stuff done. Nice to have that out of the way, and the extra poetics gave me enough to get the ilvl 270 bow (everything else is in the 140-145 range), so that was sweet! Also that piano remix of Matoya's theme was quite good!

In the future you can use the Party Finder for stuff like that and it'll fill faster. Extreme Trials (Minstrel's Ballad's are a subset of those) typically get run via people joining premade parties in Party Finder and going in manually. It also allows you to unsync it (allow people to go in above the normal level/item cap) which is how people typically do outdated fights in this game. And if you want to experience it as intended you can find people to do it that way as well. If you advertise newbie bonus you'll probably get takers either way.

Everyone does this at some point when they start playing, lol. Maybe they should make it more obvious.

Wanda seems like she'll be really difficult to explain without her show (she's looking for her and Vision's kids that may or may not exist) but also kind of easy because she had basically no presence outside of it. And Strange can easily explain her magic. I suppose it'll depend on how much her character arc features.

I already see them doing a bunch of jokes about no one believing TVA Loki isnt the dead Loki whenever he inevitably shows up elsewhere.

We'll see what happens. I'd prefer the card stay in the format because I enjoy playing with it, but that's admittedly selfish and because I hate Thoughtseize. I do wish my 4 wildcards weren't going to held in limbo for a month before they decide to ban it proper. The suspension system is kinda dumb.

Honestly I wish it was fine too, I'm just pretty sure it's not. The main reason I didn't craft UR Phoenix was because after watching a little I was pretty sure either Brainstorm or Flooting would get the axe. And also because Archives using Rare wildcards is STUPID.

(incidentally I think these factors contribute significantly to the lower playrate on ladder)

My intention wasn't to compare Opt to Brainstorm in power level, obviously Brainstorm is significantly better. Just that the card quality in those decks is already so high that having to sub out Brainstorm isn't going to hurt them too much.

Well Brainstorm was really good in decks with high card quality because it's a powerful card selection tool. These decks are being hit on consistency, not power level. They'll function fine, just without the ability to cast Brainstorm and play a fabled passage and just so happen to have perfect sequencing.

They don't (except on accident) but they've said in the past they try to move things from suspended to banned/legal after a month.

Also I do agree with the overall assessment that they don't WANT to ban brainstorm. Everything about how they're handling this says to me that they really wanted Historic to be the non-Legacy/Vintage Brainstorm format, but it's not working out at all. So I guess we'll see if it's just suspended indefinitely. Really shouldn't be though!

Yep. I'm mostly surprised this didn't happen sooner. Historic has been a weird format since the Archives dropped.

It's also interesting to me they aren't including any non-URx decks using Brainstorm in their reported data. I wonder if UW and UB are just negligible? At any rate, the format was warped around the card regardless of the raw numbers, so maybe it'll adjust for the better.
