I've been reading plenty of impressions of people who got the game early, and it sounds like the battle system gets a lot more involved later on. First of all you don't even have all the party members by the time the demo ends, so even just getting that fourth character apparently makes a world of difference.

Yeah I figured it would be something like this. TWEWY loves slowly dishing out systems and is super easy until late in the game anyways so it checks out. I was just talking about the demo.

Nowhere is the wild variation in writing quality in this series more obvious than ME3. I don't really want to put it under ME1 even though it kind of deserves it. ME1's problem is that it's a lot of potential but not enough execution and here the problem is a waste of that potential. Appropriately, my ratings of this series are all over the place, but I feel all types of ways towards this series.

A 6 feels overly generous, but it also feels correct. The plot to this game is BAD. It's honestly more deserving of a 2 or a 3. It's a standard "rally the troops" plot, except with no real thought put into it. Thematically, the game is a mess. All of the eldritch horror and alien intelligence of the Reapers is basically gone, and they're just big mindless things to shoot now. The whole synthetic vs organics thing comes out of nowhere in a bad way and clashes with themes present in the previous two games and in Mass Effect 3 itself. Mechanically it's also a mess, with it being centered around fighting a hopeless battle against overwhelming forces that should be even MORE hopeless than it is, except they still wanted a win and stoop to deus ex machina stuff to pull it off. Just...a mess.

And the character writing has these insane highs but also these ridiculous lows because they just didn't give a shit. A lot of the returning characters get totally shafted, and honestly I am probably being more generous than I should be here just because none of my favs got trashed. With the "main" cast I thought they did a great job. Love the resolution to Mordin, Wrex, Tali, and Legion's arcs, love to chill with Garrus and Liara too. EDI and Javik are humorous if nothing else. And also there's some humans no one cares about. But man. These characters really deserved a better story. Not even a happier ending, necessarily, but a more coherent one.

Some stuff counts as "active menuing" and won't put you into afk. I know interacting with a retainer and crafting both work, and I think adjusting the HUD through the menu also counts.

I agree, but consider that when the expansion launches it's going to get even worse than that. The amount of new players is so high that it's causing expansion launch level server strain during a period of time where the "typical" core users are inactive. That's insane, and if new players stick around for Endwalker it means an order of magnitude more stress than the devs were planning for. The devs are probably freaking out and as that post explains, they don't exactly have a lot of options.

From SE's perspective they probably weighed the options and figured that the WoW exodus is more publicity than the free trial meme and might as well try to pick up sales as they unfuck everything.

It was hours of players getting 10-20 minute queues, not hours of sitting in queues.

For reference on Cactuar, a brief queue of a minute or two, maybe up to 5 minutes at worst, is pretty typical for peak hours on a content-heavy patch. But I haven't played since the WoW migration.

RIP free trial, free players will only be able to log in when the queue is clear. But they're trying to increase the amount of people that can be logged in at once.

Also looks like they were planning new worlds/servers besides the Oceania one for 7.0, and have been unable to speed up plans for 6.0 due to COVID shortage and travel restrictions still being a factor. So this is just gonna be how it is for a while.

I played the demo.

Unless the rest of the game is significantly worse, this game is going to be better than the original. Largely due to the gameplay improvements, mind - I hated the gameplay of the original. Simply could not wrap my head around it at all. But the rest was very good. And NEO preserves all of what made the original good while having decent gameplay, based off the demo.

Ha, this is funny. I thought Neo's battle system was oversimplified, though also I'm not going to judge it too much based on the first two days. It wasn't bad or anything though, I was just expecting more.

I agree with everything else though! Game should be a fun time. It's just still pretty niche so there hasn't been a ton of talk about it. The demo does transfer to the main game, so if anyone is thinking of checking out then go for it.

If you really need to see what the hairstyles will look like before buying a fantasia, I believe you can use a Retainer Fantasia and enter THAT character creator in-game and see the full options with your unlocked hairstyles, then save the appearance data.

Also yeah retainer fantasias exist, people sell them pretty cheap on the MB, and I didn't learn this until years after I started playing

Because it's that specific mix, it occasionally (hell, even frequently) makes good points that people go along with, but it misses often enough too. It's just a very easy show to just go along with until you don't. And as the political climate gets more and more serious, the South Park method of mocking it gets more and more outdated to everyone but the most enlightened of centrists. A lot of political humor these days is focused on being brutally sincere, not aloof and above it all. Irony is dead and South Park's style of humor is behind the times.

Plus the writing quality noticably went downhill. Even as someone who enjoyed the games and seasons surrounding those, there were a lot of duds. The last season I watched I can't remember anything about other than they did an episode about how anxiety was fake which was not only a toxic premise but didn't even have funny jokes.

In other words it's just the same thing people are saying about everything. People change, media hasn't changed all that much.

The dual-screen/character controls are a major part of what makes the game so great and is key to the games broader themes. You lose a lot in playing FR as your first experience. I would say its only serviceable for someone who has already played the game before.

Playing through it now and I don't think you lose too much. It's a slight downgrade at worst, sidegrade at best, and the way partners were implemented does add a different layer to the game. And while I haven't tried it myself, I'm told that enabling "co-op" and then controlling both characters yourself with motion controls is...interesting!

And the QOL features more than make up for it. Axing stuff like Mingle XP and being able to quickly cheese timed stuff like pin evolution and hunger is more than worth it and is honestly a good change because those systems were, let's face it, bad in the first place. And I value the Switch's ability to actually handle the soundtrack in good quality a great deal!

Plus as mentioned there's an additional episode in Final Remix. The bottom line is there is no definitive edition of the game anymore. You won't "miss" anything by playing through only Final Remix but if you highly value the pure and original gameplay experience then go ahead and track down a DS copy.

When I first started in the middle of the Heavensward cycle, Cactuar was a mid-tier world in terms of population. It was kind of the reject cast-offs of the raid and RP servers with the main identity being meme shit. Over the past few expacs it gradually ballooned to being the third most active NA server, and that was BEFORE this surge started by asmo. I'm a little fucked up about it.

So if I'm playing SCH in a group with minimal communication and I can be reasonably confident my co-healer is going to overheal the heck out of everything anyway, what motivation do I have to use my stacks on anything other than Energy Drain? Remember that I still have the fairy and Seraph to fall back on if I actually decide I need to heal. How many encounters would I actually have to use those stacks for healing? There's like, E11S, E12S, Diamond Weapon EX, and the UItimates.

Well, your problem boils down to "bad players are bad." I mean yeah, if the other dude is overhealing everything you SHOULDN'T be using stacks on healing! But I promise you bad players are always going to be bad. This is not a game design problem, and removing ED mostly just punished the good players.

I suppose you could argue this is more an issue with the playerbase needing to communicate more and coordinate better, but Energy Drain exacerbates that issue by actively encouraging the SCH to shovel the majority of the healing load onto their partner since an OGCD with potency attached is easier to realize and comprehend than "you just saved your co-healer a GCD they can use for Glare".

Case in point here even from a selfish perspective. Broil is 290 potency. Ruin 2 + ED is 300 potency. The Aetherflow stack is NOT worth 10 potency and neither is the HP/MP. The actual design of ED does not encourage spamming it unless your only concern is your personal DPS, and even then, you're only gaining DPS here if you are not healing at ALL. If you have to use a GCD heal when you could have used a "free" AF heal, you have lost DPS. So again this is just a "people are bad at the game" issue.

Also you will have an extremely bad time in dungeons if you are only using Energy Drain, which should inherently teach people the value of the healing skills. It's really just a small subset of bads and toxic tryhards that will be determined to only spam ED in 8-mans.

Meanwhile, Scholar has two competing uses for its Aetherflow - you can use one of its healing or mitigation abilities, or you can Energy Drain. Now, FF14 is a DPS-focused game. Optimizing anything means finding how to squeeze the most possible damage out of your performance. Because Scholar has these competing uses for its unique resource, the "optimal" use for it will always be forgoing the healing tools and using more Energy Drain. This dumps more pressure on your co-healer and invalidates several what should be Scholar's most useful healing buttons, because in 98% of all cases the healing is unneeded to the point that it would be more efficient to use those Aetherflow stacks on Energy Drain.

This is kind of an outdated mindset. In dedicated groups (and even in pugs) it's better to think of both the healers' resources as being shared. The goal is to reduce the amount of resources BOTH healers have to use so that they can get as much combined DPS as possible. Think about it, one energy drain isn't worth as much as a WHM's Glare. If you use a healing skill and save the WHM a heal, you do more damage. In that sense, Aetherflow stacks are just another tool. It isn't a problem that Energy Drain exists because damage is not always the "optimal" use for a stack. That's a greedy mindset. At the same time, artificially enforcing the healing mindset by removing the skill was a disaster. There was no outlet for overflow. The job would need to be significantly redesigned to accommodate that.

Incidentally this is why caster rezzes are so highly valued, you are saving the healers time and MP and in theory it increases the damage and healing of the entire group as a result.

My solution to this whole issue is replacing Energy Drain with something akin to WHM's Divine Benison while still costing a stack. That way, even if you don't need to actually heal you can still throw a shield on the tank to mitigate some autoattacks or something, and by removing a direct DPS gain from Aetherflow you get rid of the temptation to never use the resource for healing.

It isn't a shield but this is kind of what Excog is? A delayed heal that you throw on the tank and cashes itself in later, to make sure you get healing value out of your stack. It means your co-healer doesn't have to heal the tank as much, resulting in more damage from them.

You probably shouldn't put too much stock into the enmity list but this sounds about right for summoner. Your damage comes in huge bursts with downtime in between so it makes sense to me that you'd start very high and then start to fall off until your next burst phase. You're on console IIRC but if you had a DPS meter you'd be able to see it better. Though if you're having trouble staying at high enmity that's probably a DPS problem, and depending on your level you probably just don't have the good shit yet.

It's too confused about its own self-awareness for it to feel like a pat on the back.

Another example: the plot starts when Don Cheadle comes up with plot to digitally insert LeBron James into movies to get more viewers. This is presented as Bad and LeBron rejects it. Shortly after this, LeBron is digitally inserted into the Looney Tunes world, and the Tunes are inserted into other stuff like in that clip above. So, the thing they just told you was bad. This would be an easy self-aware dig, but the problem is: this is legitimately the most interesting and creative part of the movie. This movie sucks! A lot! And this part isn't good (actually there's a Wonder Woman segment that is unironically pretty cool and well-animated) but it's honestly the best part.

It's not that deep, dude. This movie is a total mess.

Edit: If I had to make a guess, it would be that the self-aware bits are remnants from an earlier version and when the call was made to go full corporate the writers instead just went all-in on that stuff, because it feels like all the care went into the 2D and crossover segments

Believe me when I say that the rest of the movie is so absurdly maximalist in the complete opposite direction that if "HBO Max bad" was supposed to be a cry for help by the writers, it is completely and utterly buried under the bullshit.

If it is self-aware, it tries extremely hard to be mostly an ad and not look self-aware at all, defeating the point.

I really can't stress enough how much corporate bullshit is packed into this movie, it drowns out any other interpretation.

Ive done T5 and T9 synced on BLU and Id say they were comparable to the harder extremes. Not sure if BLU is net easier or harder (more dps of course, but tanking and healing is weird).

This tracks to me, the top FF14 raiders routinely complete new extremes in one lockout blind, and asmongold is obviously a high level player.

Not to diminish the accomplishment (but I'm about to diminish the accomplishment)

Jobs have gotten so massively buffed and potency has changed than even min ilevel can't account for all of it (examples: machinist and sam are nutty compared to other jobs at 50, TP and tank stance dps nerf no longer exist). Also if it really wasn't at min ilevel it is getting outgeared by two tiers. And sprouts are kind of meaningless when I'm sure that people who know mechanics have created alts to try and get into his random queues.

Still impressive! I just don't really have an indicator of how impressed to be because no one really does synced coils anymore.

I think I remember that Marvel said they weren't planning on releasing as much information about upcoming projects precisely for this reason.

This would definitely help but even not knowing that What If? and Doctor Strange and Ant-Man (ugh) and Spider-Man are coming along doesn't solve the problem with the standalone show on its own. It's still pretty obvious to figure out that's what they're doing as soon as the TVA introduces the timeline and it becomes clear that they're the bad guys. Which is why it's a bummer so much of it was devoted to explaining events instead of focusing on the cast, which I think has been the best part of the show.

To its credit, Loki does end up in an unexpected scenario at the end, stuck in an alternate timeline with no allies or gf, but the character beats here just didn't hit for me. Sylvie pretty unceremoniously does the thing she's been telling us she'd do for 5 episodes (which is bad now according to the exposition), Loki is convinced by a half hour of exposition and gets in her way only to get dumpstered in a pretty bland fight scene. The side characters are all on setting up S2 duty which is fine, it's just that the main cast is also doing that so it feels bad. Even as a dramatic season 1 cliffhanger, it's all very contrived. I agree with the idea that this feels like half of a 12-part series and not a complete season, so it'll probably feel a lot better later.

Man I thought this show was super fun but the finale is not good. It really exemplifies the issue I have with some of the writing in these MCU shows.

Almost the entire episode is literally just an exposition dump on the multiverse to set up an excuse to bring it back. But like...it wasn't dramatic because we KNEW they were going to do that. And so instead of being a satisfying finale it just feels like an advertisement for itself.

And shoutouts to Jonathan Majors for carrying the entire episode on his back, jesus.

I dont think it's an issue of Biden vetoing it, it's just an issue of if there is even political will to get a bill to him when it's very clearly not what he wants to be doing.

Republicans will never let a bill like this pass anyways, they don't want to give Dems that big a win. What Schumer SHOULD do is put it in the reconciliation package and push for 50 votes but again, with Biden and likely at least a few Senators not giving a shit I don't think it happens.

Every recent marijuana bill put to a vote in every state (including red states) has passed with margins so ridiculous, that I have a hard time believing it's Joe Biden's antiquated beliefs that are halting the push for legalization. It has to be backdoor influence.

It's mostly muscle, but it is both. There's absolutely structural influences in the party against it and that's why they don't do it. But it's also very notable that it's Biden himself who is acting as the fall guy here. His decisions to just not get involved and let it quietly fail is pretty telling imo. And he hasnt exactly been shy about his personal opposition. In fact, given Biden's history (crime bill!) I would even go as far to say that he is likely closer to all this background corruption and opposition than most Senators!

Biden was to the right of every other primary candidate on this, I have a hard time believing if someone else won they'd also be going "no comment" here.

So yeah, the fact that he got 40th is silly and based solely on his design.

We already went over this and is good and fine. Character design is part of the character!

I'd probably rate some FF1 sprites over a lot of FF characters in a head-to-head. A good design beats mediocre writing I don't care about any day. I'm not awarding points to bad characters for having dialogue.

I think book is still a 'problem' in paper, just not the same way it is on arena.

Yes, you can technically draw the game to move on, but having a soft-lock available in your standard format isn't particularly ideal either way

It's actually happened at least once before with Oblivion Ring! It was MUCH harder to pull off though so they didn't need to take any action, and then they later replaced it with Banishing Light once it rotated.

Point is, if it doesn't come up often enough then they don't have to do anything, and probably shouldn't.

I think errataing a card is also a pretty heavy-handed solution for a "fake" format that also takes more time to implement. Even if you're talking about errating it JUST for Standard 2022 on Arena, which I think is worth considering but it still very weird.

Honestly the way MTG social media has been yelling about it they should probably just implement a BO3 2022 queue and call it a day, which will also give them data on if the book is still a problem.
