Winter Soldier is one of the best MCU movies and also has a fairly serious tone so I don't see the problem here. I'm not gonna see Black Widow until it drops the additional fee so it could suck for other reasons, but I don't think blaming tone for "fitting in" is it. Most of the best Marvel movies deviate from the standard template!

This deck went 6-3 (not the exact list which I think was -2 elementals and subbed a thieves tools for an eyes of the beholder) and is up there as one of my dumbest draft decks. It isn't GOOD but man did it have some blowouts.

I've seen people defend shitty writing by saying that "it's just tropes" more often than attacking authors just for using tropes, especially if you count complaints about tsundere characters being terrible

I think blasting tropes used to be way more common back when TVTropes was more ubiquitous and maybe the pendulum has swung back the other way.

In my experience people are more generally neutral on tropes now and are upfront about loving or hating certain ones, but that does mean there are more trope defenders than there used to be.

Yeah people calling characters acting "sub-optimally" while still being in character a "plothole" bugs me. It's not a plot hole for characters to make bad decisions! It can be contrived or bad writing, but people act like it's a hole in the plot, like the writers forgot, when it's not. Overused tropes like villains being arrogant with their plans is a good example of this.

Troy Baker manages to deliver a performance that's likeable on the surface but the more you dig into him as a character the worse he gets. And I agree he ends up as more of a plot twist than a person, and Infinite's plot isn't even good.

Ive never played P1 or P2, is it possible to remake them in the modern style?

P1 and P2 both take place battling demons in the real world with more urgent problems so the time management and social link elements are a bit of a stretch, if that's what you mean. Persona 1 even has a route where you are trapped in a school so I'm gonna say definitely no for that one.

All the other RPG elements would be fine though!

In any case P5R was one of my fav games ever.

So given the quality I'd of course be more excited for Re Fantasy.

P5 is also a top 10 game for me but not above criticism, so don't worry I'm not trying to hate!

And in any case, I'm not worried at all about the quality of Persona 6 after a director change because ATLUS is quite good at what they do and it looks like a lot of the dev team is staying. And hey, the rest of the SMT franchise is extremely good too so who cares! Frankly, if Meguro jumps ship that's a much bigger loss than anything else.

Meanwhile Re Fantasy I'm not getting excited for until we see something.

Also very "fun" unintuitive fact about Standard step is that in an aoe situation you actually don't want to keep Standard step on cooldown because of damage falloff making the value of procs and fan dance MUCH higher. You really do only care about the buff then. I forget the exact number where this becomes true but it's a lot lower than you'd think, somewhere around 3-5? Anyways. It's less fun but more dps.

IIRC the main criticism of Hashino is that most of peoples complaints with how LGBT characters are handled in the Persona team's games (so also Catherine, which he was actually a writer in too) are attributed to him. It's been a recurring issue since Persona 3. Don't know how much of it is him and how much is the culture at Atlus but he's the director and has said some sketch things in past interviews so it gets projected on to him.

I think it's a fair point, but personally as long as they cut this shit out it should be fine. However so far the problems have been recently fixed in localization and not in the original text so I won't hold my breath and would just judge it critically as it comes. For the record, SEGA has been pretty good on LGBT issues (they give employee benefits and the Yakuza series at least tries even if it's by no means perfect) so there's a chance they just tell the Persona team (Re Fantasy team?) to get with the program.

anyways aside from the discourse I mostly would like to see some god damn persona 2 ports

i guess it could be a risky move if a lot of the interest is short term, though.

They added some European servers recently but the most NA has got was shuffling around when they overhauled the data centers. And they plan to add an Oceania data center for the expansion to take the load off the Japanese ones, which I am not sure how often get additional spots.

I'm so glad all the WoW converts seem to have settled on Aether, I haven't had any queue issues on Primal all expac.

Well they try to keep server size relatively balanced so what's probably going to happen is they're going to keep Aether marked as congested or mark other data centers as preferred during the wow migration so that'll change

I didn't forget about that one but deliberately didn't mention it because it is pretty looked down upon nowadays, but I guess it was more successful at the time than I remembered.

Didn't know about the Call of Duty or GTA ones though, that's interesting. I know of some other celebrity voiceovers but I was trying to think of the big mocap productions that also use likenesses which is where it really gets weird (so I guess MGSV only sort of counts). Which Kevin Spacey did do so big whoops there!

Edit: Though funnily, I think it was Kojima that really opened the door to this in the west with Kiefer Sutherland in MGSV and Norman Reedus in DS happening well before Keanu in Cyberpunk.

The answer to both of these is the same and it's because MMOs are typically very niche and very few of them are smash hits. They're both AAA but niche, and this is important. No one remembers bad launches for TOR and Elder Scrolls Online because mediocre failed MMOs are a dime a dozen. They went free-to-play and freemium and still get updates today, and no one cares. The reason FF14 1.0 is so legendary isn't because it was a failed mediocre MMO, it's because they rebooted it and it was SO crazy successful and good. They also literally wrote the failed 1.0 base game into the lore of 2.0, so it developed both an in-game and out-of-game mythology. THAT's the interesting part, not that FF 1.0 had a crappy launch, lots of MMOs did.

Yeah, I don't think it's FF14. I think the launch wasn't really the disaster, it was more that they made a bad game and it was an MMO, and an MMO without players lost them a ton of money. And by the end it was something much more playable, but it still didn't make money (which is the fault of the launch). It's not even as unique as people are saying - No Man's Sky did the same thing (make essentially a new game and give it out for free) on a much smaller scale!

There's some bias because FF14 1.0 is over and done with while F76 and 2077 are still getting updates. Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 76 were much more notable to me for being major AAA releases a little more mainstream than an MMO, and there being a ton of tangential drama besides just the game itself being bad. It's kind of a tossup to me but I'd have to go Cyberpunk.

Man people were hyping Standard 2022 but in Gold/Platinum it's about 80% control decks (classifying Izzet Dragons loosely as a control/tempo deck) and I dunno how to feel about that.

I would say it needs to be THE central theme or even have something linked to it as a major game mechanic, not just incidental. Even something like Persona I think is borderline because Persona is about friendship and isn't even that thematically dark outside of Persona 3 (though it definitely deals with mature themes).

I'm not sure. The problem with the timer is that Arena still doesn't allow draws. This means that the "correct" move is for the player with the lower timer to concede and try to win two games. But that's also not quite ideal for the lower timer player, because now they're DEFINITELY down a game. So another play for them could be to try and waste the opponent's timer somehow. In paper, forcing an intentional draw so no one gets the win and moving on to the next game would be an actual part of the strategy, but it's just not possible online.

Yeah that's earthly star. All of the timed abilities that you detonate also trigger automatically when the timer runs out, so you can't miss it.

95% of the time in normal content you will be hitting the button on cooldown and waiting for a timer to end as you enjoy free healing and damage. And then screaming as the tank pulls all of the enemies and themself out of the aoe.

You're right, but I think the poor reception to XIII contributed massively to that. I wouldn't expect nearly as big a dropoff here. 3-4 is probably still the sweet spot though.

Plus keep in mind that a different team is doing XVI, and if that's also a success then they're not going to feel a ton of pressure to wrap everything up and move onto something else like what happened to XV. Everything about the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII collection was a complete disaster but having the three "pillars" of Remake, FFXIV, and FFXVI might actually work.

I also don't think you need to have every location get the midgar treatment, if Junon, Costa del sol, Gold Saucer and Cosmo Canyon are the size of an FFXV Town/City I think you can start to fit a ton of content. Especially if you take advantage of the new consoles.

Even Junon makes more sense as like a big setpiece or prestige tour area to me given that most of it is spent infiltrating the military base. The other 3 are areas people will want to spend time in. But I agree, not everything needs to be a huge Midgar area or be a major quest hub.

You can actually give it a pretty similar flow to Part 1 if you do this. There's actually not a ton of big quest hub segments - there's the two Tifa and Aerith "dates" and the endgame prep one. Wall Street has sidequests but it's kind of its own thing, and Gold Saucer is probably going to mimic that on a slightly bigger scale.

Calm, Costa Del Sol, and Cosmo Canyon, and maybe even Nibelheim make sense to me as major quest hubs. They can make the game more open to give you more reason to go back and forth between locations but the pacing is gonna be crazy if they try to put sidequests everywhere. That works in stuff like Yakuza but the production of these quests is so high I doubt they'll do that.

Someone pointed out MCH has a shotgun, which is likely just a big AOE attack but is still pretty rad. Hopefully it's something that can be useful single-target too.

Also saw shots of a mega TBN on the DRK that looked like a miniature version of the LB.

Personally I haven't watched it yet and will just see it when the benchmark comes out tomorrow. Very excited to design my bunny boy. It's a shame the expac releases too late for bun guy summer.

Outside of the ending sequence I don't think a ton of gameplay padding is dedicated to the ghosts compared to other padding like sidequests and repeated dungeons. I think there's only two fights outside of that? They're mostly there to have dramatic story setpieces, hence my point being they get very obviously more pointless if the story reason for including them doesn't matter.

I haven't played FF7R but the main problem with episodic games is that they aren't usually cohesive, as they are in-progress long after the first episode comes out. Something that seems major in part 1 might become very minor or completely written out by the end as the writers' priorities shift and they change their plans to fit what has been well-received so far etc. I wouldn't look at part 1 as some gospel truth that they'll definitely adhere to going forward.

Yes, I'm making this exact complaint that it'll become less cohesive. Which (imo) sucks!

I feel like if they DON'T change something major, it'll make the remake ghosts in Part 1 even more pointless? They could have easily just made the small changes and extended universe tie-ins they did without the whole big metanarrative aspect and not get much complaining. I get why maybe they'd decide against it because it's a pretty divisive prospect, but they were doing a killer job of it in Part 1.

I never said that people didn't know who Vivi is outside of KH2 either!

People know who Mickey Mouse is outside of KH2. That doesn't mean being put in KH2 didn't increase his popularity! It's just true that some people who didn't really care about Mickey Mouse came away with a positive impression of that version of the character afterwards. They might not even engage with any other Mickey media after! That's how mascots work!

I'm not disagreeing with you or claiming KH2 is the source of Vivi's popularity. It's a feedback loop. Popular and iconic characters become mascots and then get used more and become more popular. A lot of people get exposed to them more as mascots than from the actual source material. That's it.

Also Yuffie "only" being 12th is kind of a funny complaint given that still easily puts her as extremely popular

I mean this is the mascot factor I was talking about earlier. Part of why you know about Vivi even if you haven't played IX is just because he shows up elsewhere. KH2 exposed a lot of people to Vivi as a mascot, in the same way it did for Cloud and "Leon" despite their personalities being off-base. People still thought they were cool!
