Whoops I let the last topic purge. There's been a new report:

https://metroid.nintendo.com/news/metroid-dread-report-vol-4/

This one is a timeline with some interesting dev notes. It notably says that Dread will have options to sequence break like Super did, so it won't be linear like Fusion!

The Super Metroid game can be said to offer the greatest flexibility for exploration in the series. You can enjoy similar flexibility in the Metroid Dread game, depending on how you take advantage of your abilities. You might be able to find ways to obtain weapons, items, and abilities earlier than the intended timing. We encourage you to try to discover alternate routes of exploration.

There's also a video at the bottom showing a glimpse of things to come, looks like they're going all in on the lore!

If you've missed the other reports:

No seriously, I just honestly preordered. That was enough to push me over the edge. I believe.

Yeah I'm not into sequence breaking but it's cool that they're aiming for it this time. And it's a good indicator of the level design being strongly thought out and the world being all nice and interconnected!

To me sequence breaking means exploration really matters.

For example I love hollow knight and I hate Ori, and it kind of boils down to that principle. Exploration is really exciting in the former because you can actually find interesting areas and power ups that are completely unnecessary to beat the game, and in the later its just a linear game where you have to backtrack to get everything. Fusion had the same problem

Fusion was great cuz the first time you played you legit thought you were finding secret paths everywhere. Excellent illusion that totally falls apart on replay.

I'm skeptical about this game being like SM in that sense though. It might still be more like Fusion.

I've just got Fusion left!

Also played through AM2R for the first time and it was fucking awesome. Ended up playing through it 3 times, beating it on every difficulty. Fusion mode was brutal.

The secret to hollow knight is that Mantis Claw opens like 90% of the map and it and Dash are the only power ups that actually matter lol

One of my favorite games though, I don't mean it as a dig

Im planning to but it wont be a replay because I never finished it in the first place. But my Wii U is right next to my desk which makes the first-person aiming a little trickier than it would normally be.

Did you only play the original version of Ori? The Definitive Edition has a few optional areas.

And you can definitely sequence break. Maybe they made that easier in the DE as well?

Its probably closer to the ways it works in Zero Mission, where there are well-hidden paths to do things in a different order that require clever use of abilities, but its still a design authored by the creators. You run into this stuff most frequently when trying to earn the less than 15% of items collected ending

Fusion on the other hand straight-up disallows sequence breaks of any kind. All those locked doors at Navigation Rooms force you to do what you're supposed to do. If you manage to reach a powerup before youre supposed to get it in the story (theres a Power Bomb you can do this with for example) you wont be able to use it. If you reach a boss before youre supposed to, you can usually fight them, but it wont skip to that part of the story, and when you reach the point you were intended to fight them, theyll be alive again.

Varia Suit is ironically the one item it is never worth skipping, because when you collect the Gravity Suit (required to finish the game) it automatically also gives you the Varia Suit and counts it toward your item collection %

Damn black space pirates. Could never beat them in my 15% hard mode run and my save was deleted by my brother at some point.

Wouldn't have been as big of a pain if you didn't have to beat the last boss every time you retried

They're definitely a problem. If you jump back up to the ledge you drop down from, sometimes they get stuck in a weird routine where they try to climb up but can never actually reach you and you can just shoot them for free

New trailer slated for the 27th.
Cool thanks I forgot to check! Some interesting stuff there, I wonder why the suit changes as it does.

I thought Energy Parts were new, but after checking I see they were an Other M exclusive until now. Hey, that game hasn't been forgotten entirely!

I don't want to spoil myself too much but it's gonna be hard to not watch that trailer.

As a result, her defeat causedas one might say"ability amnesia.

So if youve been looking closely at the trailers and also recall the Chozo Memories of Samus Returns, it seems pretty likely that the Chozo we keep seeing is actually an X that has taken his form

Goddammit. I watched 45 seconds of the trailer and was like "THEY'RE SHOWING ME TOO MUCH" and shut it off. But then I browsed the comments to get me hyped and of course a bunch were about the return of Kraid. Which is awesome but would have been better to experience in the moment.

This game is going to fucking rule though.

I'm getting more hyped about this as time goes on, I think this trailer was much better than the first (although admittedly pretty spoilery). I'm surprised at how much they're pushing the story up front this time, I'm glad it doesn't seem to just be a rehash of the old games to play it safe after what happened with Other M.

And judging from these comments it seems I should try to get Samus Returns before this comes out!

I dunno, SR was only alright to me. But the main problem there was the structure of the game being remade to begin with (linear with no real reason to revisit areas if you're not looking for 100% completion; uninteresting boss battles, except for the new ones they designed specifically for the remake)

SR is great. It was indeed linear by nature of being a Metroid 2 remake, but even then they found ways to make you backtrack and explore before moving on. It's not as wide open as Super Metroid, but they've already made it clear Dread is closer to SM with sequence breaking. Hopefully they're for real about that.
