Absolute peak MGS gameplay and plot. Really feel like MGS lost something as it added complexities like camouflage-- just tightly designed stealth areas where memorizing routes is important is where it's at. I got all the dog tags in this game due to enjoying it so much-- collection elements are not something I generally do. Also beat it on extreme-- that's less notable cause it is something I do. Possibly my favorite VG story ever too-- prophetic stuff in hindsight and has THE mind blowing moment in video games. One of the easiest 10s I can give. Maybe not my favorite video game but top 5? Absolutely

Don't like this as much as 1, 3, or 4 but it's still pretty good. Feel like I might rate it higher if I hadn't have played the Twin Snakes version of MGS1, but the gameplay felt very similar except with a worse location, cast, and story.

The ending is an absolute mess

I like TTS more than most and prefer it to MGS, but it doesn't hold up on repeated playthroughs like MGS2 does cause the design of the areas isn't really designed for FPS aiming.

I've never felt the desire to replay any MGS game except maybe 3 so that's a moot point for me. I'm not really here primarily for the gameplay to begin with.

Yeah. I'm not saying your rating isn't fair or anything I'm just saying TTS is not actually similar gameplay if you actually dive into the games. Surface level it's the same but TTS is extremely exploitable-- honestly can do it on a first playthrough too if you are observant or familiar with vanilla MGS1. Sniping with the tranq gun is just ridiculous there.

Twin Snakes can be fun in the sense that MGS2's gameplay wasn't designed for MGS1's environment, so you can really bust that game open.

Big Shell kinda sucks, particularly the outdoor bridges. Otherwise stellar. I think the bosses in particular are pretty under-rated.

Also there may not be a plot that has ever aged better.

Vamp on higher difficulties might be my favorite boss battle in the series.

I think Fortune being a "boss fight" leaves a bad taste in people's mouths. And Fatman being kinda gimmicky (I still like him). The others are all really good I think.

I haven't played this in forever, so this is a strictly nostalgia based rating.

Replayed last year. It's still astounding.

My love for it has been like a Russian doll where originally it changed the way I thought of story in videogames, as well as having this terrific gameplay (the VR missions really show what you can do with it), then I played the Tanker section with its incredible opening which may still be unsurpassed (I played it before mgs1 so no Tanker first time), then I played MGS1 which recontextualised it, then when I was older I understood the way it played with the idea of a sequel, then its story became weirdly prescient. There was always a new way to appreciate it.

So it hasn't just stood the test of time, it has aged amazingly well - while I think 3 is about the same as it ever was (phenomenal) and 1 is good but sometimes feels its age, 2 reaffirmed and strengthened my belief that it was the greatest game of all time over and over again for like 15 years. It took something completely different and unique (Outer Wilds) to surpass it.

It's a funny and creative game but it has its share of problems, not least of which that Kojima isn't a very good writer. The part where Raiden is running around naked was important back in the day though
