It's somewhere in my top 10-15 games ever. Replayed it a ton of times.

The first few zones are good, then it falls off and the final zone is awful

Was never too much of a fan of 2D Sonic

Most levels are "hold right, jump when you hit a wall, repeat"
Bosses are fine but the levels are mediocre
And they also try to make them bigger with multiple paths but because there is nothing to collect I never saw the reason to explore

Generations is the only game that did it right

A few great levels, but overall it's the worst of the Genesis trilogy.

Sonic games are poorly designed on the whole. The control is fine. The speed is good. The platforming where you can't haul ass is bad. It doesn't feel satisfying.

I feel faster in SMB1 and that's a problem.

Replay it every once in a while. Levels tend to have variety with paths you can take. The soundtrack is a classic, even with the levels that have somewhat annoying sounds. Bosses are fun, and getting all around as quick as you can, especially when drowning or the level just going too long - classic memories. Chaos emerald minigame is fun, and getting Super SOnic is a real treat.

Also, this was like, the CLASSIC co-op game for me. In terms of playing a game with my brother, I could actually do this one, die as much as I like, and not have to worry about continually losing to him. Someone would have to tell me if there's a better option out there, but I've always considered Sonic 2 to be the forebear of co-op gameplay.

Dock half a point for Sky Chase Zone.

Arguably the best 2D platformer ever, and one of the best sequels ever. Actually gives you space to go fast unlike most of Sonic 1. 10/10 soundtrack as well.

I get this for Sonic 1, maybe, but not Sonic 2.

I dunno, maybe it's the benefit of replaying the game so much and knowing the layouts, but it's fairly easy for me to fly through most acts. I think it's one of the great joys of a Sonic game. Your improvement on replays is very noticeable.

It's a similar feeling to a good DKC game, where your natural momentum just keeps you rolling if you know what you're doing.

Sonic 1 is actually legitimately a slightly bad game for it yeah. I would probably rate it a 4

Replaying may be part of it. I have played Sonic 3 & Knuckles more and feel like it's paced and laid out better-- so maybe if I put more reps in Sonic 2 I'd go that way. But I also don't really want to.

8 for Sonic 2, consistently fun game

A generation defining game, but it does have a little bit of launch title awkwardness, mostly just some bland visuals

I can agree that I don't really like Sonic 1 much at all. Sonic 2 I think is great. Sonic 3 is laid out well but I think Sonic 2 zones are designed with a bit more freedom in mind. Either way, I'd never fault someone for having a preference between 2 and 3

My memories of playing Sonic 1 and 2 (never played 3) are a bit painful. I didn't own a Genesis and just played occasionally when my friend would let me, but I was pretty bad at it. Still, it didn't handle the way I wanted to and I found myself dying a lot to things I considered unfair. It's a seminal game, and I respect it for what it is, but it's not getting top marks.
