Yeah I'm only 20 minutes in to this literal feature film, and already I am at a loss as to how this video can go.

These videos are getting too long, but also goddamn Summoning Salt deserves awards.

I've been following Tetris world records since hypertapping debuted so I didn't learn a whole lot, but it's a damn good video. Knowing what I know, it was a bit odd hearing him call level 29 the kill screen. Still great.

Put this thing in a theater or two so SummoningSalt can win an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

I legitimately think this about his Mario Kart video with the guy trying to have all the records at once VS the community pushing back against that goal. Best video to date.

I agree with that -- Summoning Salt does feel behind the curve in that regard. Usually it feels like a new take or exploration each time with him, but Tetris's progression blew up before he got into this.

It's fine really, just recognizing it.

I actually watched a documentary in a theater last month about competitive Tetris! It was from like 10 years ago, so none of this was in it, so this was a nice update.

I remember being struck by the fact that one of the competitors (who made it to the National Finals) didn't even realize until filming started that you could press "B" to rotate the pieces in the opposite direction, along with some other technique that everyone else was using. There was something so pure about that. There's no way that anyone could be a top competitor in any game anymore while playing so "sub-optimally."

Finished the whole thing. I didn't even know Tetris had a kill screen going in, which should tell you where my knowledge was going in (practically zero). It's crazy how much happened in the last 5 or so years for a 35 year old game.

Also the whole vaulting thing made me really dislike that one guy. He's definitely the villain of the story imo

I didn't know much about competitive Tetris. Just that story in like December about a kid locking the game. So I really appreciate this video!

This is definitely the one Im least interested in because this ground has been so thoroughly trod in the past four or five years. Plus I feel like other versions of Tetris are way more interesting than this one, Id love a video about folks reaching Grand Master in TGM3 for example, or analysis of competitive Puyo Puyo Tetris

This one (eventually) covers fairly recent material. If it has been two or three years since you've kept up, it might be worth watching the back half at least.

I know all of that stuff; a few months ago there was a new article or video about this every other day it felt like. If anything, the older stuff is what I dont know so Ill probably watch the first half

I finally got around to watching this. Kinda funny how it felt like so much of the recent-ish history was "And then this fringe not-really-contender/new guy randomly went godmode for a run and blew away the goal the community's been working towards and their run was untouchable for a while"

I did end up watching the whole thing--did I miss it or did he never mention that Jonas Neubauer died

That was not mentioned in the video. I was actually curious what he was up to since his name didn't come up in the later parts of the video. RIP

I wasn't surprised that Neubauer's death wasn't brought up but I was surprised that he didn't receive a tribute at the end of the video - I figured there'd be something.

I was really early on in the video and I went to see if Jonas Neubauer had a Wikipedia page and even before clicking the article I saw it mention his date of death. I was like, "Oh, that's so sad. And I probably just spoiled an upcoming portion of this video."

Neubauer's passing probably should have been mentioned at some point, but he did fall off because he never really mastered the new techniques. He maybe never even tried, I don't know. The Tetris World Championship trophy is named in his honor, though.

Yeah I remember when Jonas passed ;_; watched some of the NES world championships back in the day

This one was pretty interesting as someone who has played enough of Tetris to know that it gets borderline impossible at 29 but not enough to know that was considered a kill screen

(At one point anyway-- love that you eventually had people crushing that)
