Why would I call women "females"? That's weirdly clinical, like I'm observing the mating habits of birds.

It depends on the context, there's misogynists whose use of it is clearly meant to describe them in a derogatory generalized way. There's also innocuous uses of it.

So, no, I haven't scrubbed the word from my vocabulary like I have with some others, however I am mindful of how I use it.

SecretBase posted...

You realize you're describing yourself, right? You sound whiny and easily offended over the idea that there are others who condemn the usage of it, which is sometimes valid condemnation, and your solution is to start using certain terms purely out of spite.

It's not a bad word and it depends on the situation. Like in the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion they are adding female Hrothgars. A player race that until now has only been playable as male. And you can't forget Fem Shep, which is short for Female Shepard from Mass Effect

I never use to say it, but people kept bringing it up so often, it crept in to my lexicon. In truth i don't really see a problem with the word. People had been using the term in casual conversation long before it became a buzzword for the youth. It's just the people who focus too hard it from either side of the argument I find weird.

Yeah. This has been the one example where I've been annoyed by it's sudden tabooness, when referring to the whole gender. In that case "girls" feels patronising and "women" just incorrect

Nope. I use male/female indiscriminately when I want to refer to people without regard to relative age groups (not everyone who is male/female is necessarily a man/woman, for instance). The most frequent way this occurs to me is when I'm talking about my experiences in high school (a rather pivotal/depressing era of my life, so it comes up in conversation quite a lot) in which case I will often refer to my "male/female peers".

Rest assured that I'm not using it in that creepy Ferengi sort of way.

When has "that female" ever, ever been a term in casual conversation? "Female" in casual conversation has only been an adjective, typically to describe something... Not human, where the gender may be unknown, such as, say, a pet. Using "female" as a noun to describe a woman has never been a thing in casual conversation.

[okay, people have brought up the idea of using it to refer to females that they can not immediately tell (or don't know) are adults or not. okay that's actually fair. i'm tired and angry and only thinking of the incel definition i will admit to that.]
Just say woman then like people do for men. They don't go "gee maybe it's a kid I'll say male" they just say man or guy.

Gals, dudettes, birds, girls, women.

An incel would use "female" before "gal". "Guys and gals" is absolutely a normal thing in informal situations when talking to a crowd. "Bird" is just antiquated and doesn't really see any use outside of the UK. Doesn't change that it is the direct parallel to bloke.

It's also the way cops talk, which just makes it seem even more trashy and unappealing.

This is specifically referring to using "female" as a noun, or atleast in similar, dehumanizing context, because the incel way is to say "That female/the females" etc. and so on.
