In 2020 i was making 65k then got laid off when the capital riots occurred in January 2021. Took a job for less pay at 60k in 2021 and have only received a dollar raise since then. I should be making 76k at this point but instead im down about 15k in terms of purchasing power

What if there is no inflation and it's just the US dollar that sucks?

Inflation is...well insane recently. Cost of living in Olympia WA has almost doubled in 10 years. Cost of renting the same place has doubled in most cases in just the last 5 years. For a 1 bedroom apartment that was $700 when I moved here, the same apartment is over $1300 (we moved here in 2016, but didn't meet the friends running the apartment complex till 2018.

From 2018to 2023 it has jumped over $600.

That being said, there are no 1 bed apartments available at that price, the cheapest 1 bedroom available there (and only one is available) is 1425$ (over double the cost in 2018).

That isn't inflation, that is just insane.

I started my current job at $60,000 2 years ago. I'm on track to make $65,000 this year. But the CPI Inflation Calculator says that inflation means my $60,000 then is $67,000 now. So my employer is at least doing better than most, but I'm still falling behind.

The really sucky thing is that my grandfather was making $60,000 a year in 1991. That's like $135,000 now. He was one of the highest ranking tax auditors for the California State Board of Equalization, plus he had a military pension with disability.

I have, actually. I got a small raise earlier this year (about $3000, I think) as a cost of living balance.

That said I also got a real raise via a promotion earlier this month and I also took on a second job (don't need it, just want it). So I'm fine.

I got a huge raise last year, so I am over inflation. I have also been getting 4% pretty consistently year over year. Tech jobs for the most part pretty much always keep up with inflation, so it isn't a big issue.

Just to confirm, I put in what I started at in 2004 and adjusted for inflation it is basically the starting salary for a Software Engineer fresh out of college today.

More or less. We went on strike over it back in April. We got notably less than was actually needed to keep up with inflation, but we did get a solid raise. The new pay rate kicked in about a month ago and I'll be getting adjusted backpay as far back as the new collective agreement goes, which I believe is back to 2021.

my first job had a minimum raise of 3% every year

I always had higher raises than that at that job and the next that didn't have a minimum

haven't gotten a raise in the UK
. not sure about how the country is as a whole but it's not a regular thing at my company which is a smaller startup than there I was at previously

but I'm already in the 95th percentile for the country and they're paying visa fees so whatever

but nothing explicitly inflation though the minimum raise was kinda covering some of that

Yeah I can still afford my bills but I'm a lot shorter on discretionary spending money than I was before. I've had one pay raise in four years and it was 2%. I'd leave but finding a fully work from home job that pays as much as I currently make isn't so easy. Also it's not so bad I'd take that risk. It's just annoying

Are there really jobs out there willing to compensate you for rent going up 40% in like 2 years? Most would laugh in your face if you asked for like a 20% raise to keep up with cost of living I think lol

And yet when people are asked to keep doing the same work for progressively less and less purchasing power, that's considered normal. It's almost like the economy is fundamentally broken.

Yeah, i agree completely, but there is pretty much no company that is going to give you a raise to match the inflation we've seen the last few years. They're just gonna keep their 3-4% bs and act like that's all they can do

It also doesn't help that most employers aren't the ones making record profits and actually benefiting from the inflation, so they aren't actually in a position to be able to compensate for the cost of living increase. It's the greed of a relatively small number of people driving much of this, at the expense of everyone else.
