A little boy has been left unable to smile after his pet dog ripped off his cheek while they watched a Disney film in bed. Brantley Manion, five, was pounced on by Marley, a Mountain Cur English pointer cross, on January 8. Mom Amanda Dally, of Wentzville, Missouri, said she and her husband Christopher, 34, heard screams coming from his bedroom. She said: We ran in there and we had to take Marley off him. She wouldnt stop, it was really vicious. She was on top of Brantley and we couldnt see him. Christopher pulled her off and Brantley was laying there holding his face together. She had sliced his face, it was a crazy night. Amanda, 35, revealed that the right side of Brantleys face was left hanging following the savage attack by the three-year-old dog. His mouth has been left paralyzed on one side due to torn ligaments. Amanda said: It was completely ripped so you could see his teeth through his cheek.

There was blood everywhere, all over Marley and the bed. She doesnt know how the attack happened as she branded Marley the sweetest, adding she was so protective. Brantleys lacerations were stitched up after a three-hour operation. Amanda said she doesnt know how many operations Brantley will need in the future. And, she doesnt know if he will be left scarred for life. She added: He needs more surgery because he cant smile. His mouth was completely in half so they had to reconnect the corners of his mouth. He cant smile, its like one side of his face is paralyzed. but the scarring isnt bad. The family got Marley when Brantley was just two-years-old. Christopher was attacked by a Siberian husky when he was younger and didnt like dogs. Brantley insisted Marley didnt mean to attack him but the family have been forced to put their dog down.

Didn't want to lose his friend. But I get why they'd have to after an attack that bad.

People who try to use dogs for protection while having kids are setting themselves up for failure. You don't want a dog around kids to have any ill will towards humans at all. You want it to be a coward. Don't chance them misunderstanding a moment and getting their wires crossed. Same way you wouldn't give a 9 year old a gun to protect a 5 year old. You're just opening your family up to be harmed by mistakes.

And accidents have happened. So, it's a good comparison >_>. Cause they also leave dogs that showed signs of aggression alone with kids. Because they can't understand that just cause they love something, it doesn't mean it can't snap.

You have to train a dog to be a guard dog. Some people just get big dogs and don't socialize them but that would make them dog aggressive not people aggressive.

The issue is that people get dogs with questionable breeding backgrounds and can't train them

But you're still trusting an animal with limited intelligence to never get it's wires crossed if something out the ordinary happens. You can't plan for every single thing an animal has to comprehend and react to on the spot. Between the 2, just get a gun and store it responsibly. Get a pet if you want a companion and to train it to be only friendly. The concept of making an animal's whole life about protecting your house is kind of fucked up anyway. What kind of life is that?

All dogs need training, some breeds have protection instincts, it's ingrained. I didn't have to train my Cane Corso to guard, it was just in her to do so, I took the training from there. A protection trained guardian breed is amazing in its job as a personal protector and estate guardian. Dogs need a job and need to work, people get traditional working breeds and just have them lazing around doing nothing and wonder why they have behavioral problems.

A Mountain Cur looks a lot like a pit, but is a very different breed, more like a cattle dog. If you google what a pure bred one looks like, you'd think it's in the pit family.

Doesn't make any part of this better, I was familiar with the breed and chimed in.

Ive always tried to be careful about mixed breeds unless I know what the breeds are. Even if a dog has flighty or aggressive tendencies, you should be able to work with it, so its helpful to know which genes the dogs have.

My dog is a Red Heeler mixed with a wolf and shes really nice, but we have to monitor if shes getting overstimulated. We have worked with her and if something upsets her, she goes to her crate to decompress.

Dogs around kids should be trained to sit there and take it. It's fucked up a lil bit, but it's just necessary.

I made sure my dog wasn't aggressive by constantly prodding him and doing annoying things to see how he would react. You gotta make sure a dog isn't just non aggressive because no one ever tested it. Drag it away from it's food while it's eating. Keep pushing it away when it wants to be near you. Lightly put your hand in it's mouth. Just, anything you can think if that a kid who doesn't know better might do.

Tbf, my dog was a sweetheart when I got him. I trained him to be a dog that listens better, but I can't take credit for him being a sweetheart. Basically just not abusing him made him stay a sweetheart. Easiest job ever.

Pits actually make great guard dogs and are really intelligent. People just don't realize how much energy they need to burn though. Dogs that don't get enough exercise often have problems.
