Pits actually make great guard dogs and are really intelligent. People just don't realize how much energy they need to burn though. Dogs that don't get enough exercise often have problems.

They don't make good guard dogs (real American Pit Bull Terriers anyway), one because purebred specimens are usually too small at between 30-60 lbs with most falling on the mid-low 40s, and because they were never bred to have guardian/watchdog traits and are generally people friendly and not suspicious of strangers the way a Rottweiler or Corso is. Now these sketchy curs and Bully mixes that people call "Pits" are a different story, some lines have mastiff mixed in. It's a fact though that they have a lot of energy and need to be worked.

After my current dog dies, I don't think I'll be getting another. Even though by that time my kiddo will be old enough to know better than fuck with an animal.

Well, she knows now, but still.

Luckily our dog is just a big ol softy. She just lays around all day. I think she has hip problems too, she doesn't like to walk for very long, and I can't imagine her getting worked up for any reason except to protect us. Shit, I even have to lift her into the car when we get her groomed.

my uncle wanted australian shepherd. wouldn't able to handle those (too smart and not suited for apartment).

My childhood dog was an Aussie.. He was actually very well behaved, but I kept him super occupied..

Being herded was awful.. I mean hilarious now. But start moving anything beyond a walking pace and he would get in my way or outright stop me. Riding a bike or anything with wheels and he would go fucking nuts.

When I got older, he started listening to me so I could on walks with him. He was always really easy to walk at that point too. Unaffected by other dogs, walked beside and behind me at my pace. Always wondered if he started listening to me merely because I was bigger.

Im just gonna stop talking. Guard dogs just isn't my specialty lol. I probably only know people who say regular dogs are guard dogs

A lot of dogs can work as a guard dog if you don't do shit to socialize them. Especially the more their job leans towards violence. A cocker spaniel sure as hell isn't a guard dog, but holy shit did I never want to go into my friend's yard. But some dogs are just bred very specifically to do it.
