It's been at LEAST a decade since I last did a top 100 video games list, and honestly, there are just so many video games out there that I've either played, or perhaps SHOULD play, that it's hard for me to compile everything imaginable. So I figure if you, Board 8, provide me with the names of games, I can at least cobble those together into some sort of definitive ranking. I might even do write-ups. And if I haven't played a game, I'll say that too. So uh, yeah, letsa go!

Current Ranking:

  1. Final Fantasy X (Believe it or not, I don't outright HATE FFX. I think it's a terrible RPG, and I'm of the opinion that it fails miserably on the key point that an RPG has to offer, namely its story. The main character is an obnoxious himbo whose forcible insertion into the story offends me, but then again, it's not like the character who SHOULD be the lead (Yuna) is anything more than a meek romantic interest (despite very much not being that based on the story around her). But as a GAME, the gameplay in FFX is some of the best in the franchise. It's still got the ATB system, which works, but it has that order of movement list on the side that you can alter with Haste or Slow or whatever, and it feels like you have more impact on the flow of combat than a standard ATB. Plus, the leveling system is simple, yet dynamic. FFX evolves RPG gameplay in a really fun way. Blitzball's pretty good too, but it's a bit much to add on top of all the other mini-games you have to do for ultimate weapons. It's just that ultimately, the story IS what matters most in an RPG, and that's where FFX fails, unfortunately).

Metroid Prime (I've played it, but too long ago to remember, and nowhere near long enough to judge)

Current Ranking:

  1. Silent Hill 2 (Far and away my favorite survival horror game of all time. The gameplay is a little janky, but that's kinda par for the course with the genre. The atmosphere and storytelling in Silent Hill 2 is amazing though, and unlike Silent Hills 1 and 3, where the main character feels like your standard everyman who happens to have a connection to the town, James Sunderland has deep, emotional traumas, and that's reflected in how Silent Hill warps to suit his mindset. It's just an extremely good game overall, and James Sunderland is one of my favorite video game characters, full stop.)
  2. Star Fox Adventures (I got so invested in this game that I had to go out and buy a new Gamecube controller for my Wii, since I got to the fourth world with the river race, and my joystick wouldn't go far enough to give me the proper speed to win the race. That being said, this is only really memorable for introducing Krystal, and maybe if she'd been the main character, she would've gotten into Smash by now. I don't see how she's not already.)
  3. Final Fantasy X

Haven't Played:

Metroid Prime
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky
Suikoden 3
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (I've played it enough to get off the plateau I think, but it's just too wide up and there's not enough linearity for me to enjoy it. I need more structure than this game is able to provide.)

Current Ranking:

  1. Silent Hill 2
  2. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (Not sure what the difference is between SA2 and SA2:B, but I love SA2:B. I love the diversity in level design, I love the Chao raising, I love the music, and I love the general excitement I feel whenever I play it. I know people don't care much for 3D Sonic, but I think SA2 managed to nail the formula at least a little bit.)
  3. Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate (This is a good game. Unfortunately, it's kinda come at a point in my video gaming lifecycle where I don't play a whole lot of multiplayer games anymore, so one of the biggest selling points is negated. I love the huge roster though, and I found the story mode rather interesting, as it managed to provide unique scenarios for rerunning certain characters over and over again in combat.)

Final Fantasy VIII (I want to rank this at the bottom of my current list, but I feel like that's not fair, since even though I've played several hours, I haven't even gotten to like, disc two. It's not a fun game though. The gameplay is awful, the leveling system is awful, the junctioning is awful, and when your story introduces obnoxious spazzes like Zell and Selphie as two of the first PCs, it's just hard to get invested in bad gameplay.)

It's a lot like the Pokemon version of FFVIII though, in that the story is kinda lame, and the gameplay is awful. What's the best part of a Pokemon game? Catching 'em all. What do you do in Colosseum? Well, you have to steal shadow Pokemon from other trainers, and then use these unruly Pokemon in a series of repetitive battles to DE-shadow them before they can start leveling up normally. And it's not even like they're especially strong. That's what sucks the most about that design decision.)

Current Ranking:

  1. Silent Hill 2
  2. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
  3. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (The game that kicked off a really enjoyable franchise. I love having a large cast that I can form direct opinions on. I love murder mysteries. I love the slowly-unfolding meta-story. And though it's weird, it's still well-grounded compared to later games in the series, so everything feels almost that much more dire as a result.)
  4. Detroit: Become Human (I know it's a meme that David Cage is awful and does awful things, but Detroit is/was considered his best game for a reason. I enjoyed watching a Castle Superbeast Let's Play enough to buy the game and play it myself, and it's a well-made adventure game. The slavery allegory is a bit too on-the-nose, but other than that, it's solid.)

Current Ranking:

  1. Silent Hill 2
  2. Persona 5: Royal (This ranking can largely apply to P5 as well, but Royal makes a TON of QoL improvements that just make it a better game from a gameplay perspective. The story is still solid, and honestly? If you stop playing Royal at the point where P5's story ends, and just watch P5's ending, you have a near-perfect RPG. P5R's additional story content doesn't quite land for me, and the ending is FAR worse and more unsatisfying. But still, the QoL stuff on top of an already-solid story from the original is more than good enough to rank highly.)
  3. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
  4. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  5. Detroit: Become Human
  6. Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate
  7. Donkey Kong 64
  8. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (I love the franchise as a whole, but DR2 is definitely the one I think is the biggest mess. Part of the whole conceit of the plot makes everything random and chaotic, and it loses a lot of that grounding in reality that the rest of the series has. And as much as I enjoy the individual personalities of the characters, it feels like they're not a cohesive cast, which hurts the game compared to the other two entries of this style. Still, it's got a lot of the same positives as DR1 and 3, so that's gotta count for something, right? I just wish it didn't feel like the developers were super in love with their creation, ignoring its flaws. That's all.)
  9. Tetris
  10. The Bouncer (It's been so long since I played this, but I remember loving it, and loving the Square-Enix style beat 'em up energy it provided. I recall it having a simple leveling system too, which is always appreciated. So yeah, decent nomination here.)
  11. World of Warcraft (I played WoW for a LONG time before taking an extended break this expansion. WoW's problem is that it's extremely hot-or-cold. There are times when you're having a blast, leveling up, making characters. But then there are times when the game feels like a chore and a job, and you have no time to play secondary characters, because you need to stay up-to-date on the latest content. It's one of those games where it's fun as you're leveling up, but then you reach cap and you can very easily get bored. It doesn't help that I feel like the game has really started catering more to hardcore players than casuals, so like, you have dungeons that are only accessible via pre-made groups, or zones where everything scales to be more difficult, so you never get the sense of accomplishment from overleveling a zone anymore. It still has fun memories for me, but it's a rough game to enjoy.)

  3. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
  4. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (This is the best game in the trilogy. It takes the insane character personalities from 2, which is 2's best quality, and it combines that with the cast dynamic and interpersonal relationships of 1, to create a story with the best of both worlds. Is it perfect? No. I'd definitely make some changes. But it's the best of the franchise, and I really enjoy almost everything the game has to offer, outside of chapter four.)
