See, here's the thing: Whatever they were taking, they'd be idiots for glomping onto the current Unproven Experimental Drug of the Week, and they would be mocked accordingly. That they're taking horse dewormer - even in doses that would not actually be used for deworming horses (not that "safe oral dose of ivermectin for humans" is a concept that any actual scientific process has recognized or defined) - just makes it even sillier. We do, but I get where he's coming from here. It's similar (though different in at least one key regard) from saying that people were drinking aquarium cleaner because somebody said hydroxychloroquine cured Covid. That's very much a hyperbole that isn't entirely accurate, an inaccuracy which a lot of people overlook in their rush to laugh at stupid people. Overlooking inaccuracies in such a time of rampant misinformation can be dangerous, so it's worth making an effort to make sure they're pointed out where appropriate so as to prevent people from being dangerously misled.

That said, I don't see much of a problem with this particular instance, given that the inaccuracy in question is largely academic and therefore just adds entertainment value, rather than being meaningfully misleading. He's not wrong, this is just a case where being right doesn't matter much.

I know it's fun to be hyperbolic about the horse medicine and what not but like, they make human pills for it. We all know that right? It appears to be useless for fighting covid but always referring to it as a horse dewormer feels like the same thing as the old cigarette ads that used to say cigs had rat poison in them.

For a while India even included it as part of their home treatment kits sent out by their government. They've since taken it out because it doesn't do anything, but it was still thought to be, at the very least, a relatively harmless addition to their medication.

I mean, yeah, don't jam some weird horse shit in your body. But as fun as it is to make fun of these idiots, let's call a spade a spade.

"Being tested for use against malaria" does not mean "being given to random people who maybe got bitten by a mosquito recently," especially in a part of the world where endemic malaria was eradicated ~70 years ago. Nobody treats people in the US for malaria as a prophylactic measure because they were recently bitten by a mosquito.
