I was thinking about what the least used party member in all of Final Fantasy is, and I think it's Umaro? But I still used him a lot in the final dungeon, at least. Although, my question applies more broadly than just FF.

I've played Baldur's Gate 2 like a thousand times, and in all that time, I've only used Cernd once. Dude's terrible.

Marcus in whatever Fire Emblem made Fire Emblem popular in the U.S. because I was advised that you shouldn't use Marcus because he has pitiful stat gains and will take valuable early game experience away from your other characters. Also, I never used Merlin or whatever the tent guy's name was.

I don't think I've ever used Cernd, either, and I think that's the only BG2 character I can say that about (barring anyone added in the enhanced edition or whatever.)

Trying to think of characters who are the only ones I've never used for a decent length of time in their game

Tony (Wild Arms XF) (Good dog, though.)
Karla (Fire Emblem 7)

Those are the only ones coming to mind.

In most RPGs, I rotate to try to use everyone if I can. I'm trying to think of a situation where I just outright never used someone aside from a game like CC with a massive cast.

That's actually not possible. The game forces you to use more than 10% of the cast. Even if it didn't, are you telling me you never once used any of the optional characters at all, not even to fill out your party? Does it even let you walk around with a party of two if you can have a third character?

Many, many people from Suikoden but shout out to Maas and his brothers as well as Antonio and Lester from the first Suikoden. I think Suikoden 3 is the best with making sure a lot of the cast gets utilized due to the separate parties for much of the game.

As for other games, I rarely use Eiko in FF IX since I feel like Garnet can do everything she can...unless the party gets split up, of course.

In FGO, many of the low-rarity Berserkers and Assassins never get any use from me, even when my roster was not as complete.

I find Kimahri makes a better mage than anything. With or without the Holy trick. Takes a bit of investment, then suddenly he begins taking names. Even better when you backtrack to pickup Ultima at the first chance, then use some Black Magic Spheres to give it to Yuna and Lulu as well.

This. Of course there's RPGs with dozens/hundreds of characters (FE, Pokemon) where there's folks I just never ever use, but for smaller casts I always try to mix it up.

Weirdly enough, TG Cid from FF Tactics fits the bill for me. I used him once, saw he was ridiculously OP, and never used him again as I didn't want to make the game trivial.

Also the droid in KOTOR (not HK) for sure.

Peco from Breath of Fire III.

On the surface level, he's a stupid looking character that joins at level 1 with horrible stats except HP. Not once in the game he's forced as a party member that has random encounters. IF you put the effort he becomes the second strongest character but it takes away from what is real purpose is: being exp soak to learn skills from Masters.

What people don't really know is that Peco builds can be replaced by Garr (another shitty character) and get the same result, except Garr has superior equipment options and innate fire resistance.

If I've played FF7 once a year over the past 20 years (and that might be a conservative estimate), he's been in my endgame party maybe twice in that span of time.

First one I can think of is Agate. Just don't like the guy.

I also tend to neglect anybody from Wei.

Theres a ton of them really if you count me just ignoring characters when not forced to use them. LOTS in FF alone even.

I wasn't even thinking of games with lots of characters like Chrono Cross or the FEs, lol, I just meant normal RPGs. But Chrono Cross is a great example regardless.

I mentioned this but I always kill Montblanc in FFTA because he's so terrible. Usually I'll rotate horseshit characters in if they have a unique feature, but Montblanc has no redeeming qualities

I use everyone. Even the useless Suikoden characters like Tuta I leveled up to 60 to see if they got better.

If someone tells me a character is bad or useless that just gives me more incentive to use them.

Honestly the only actual useless character I've ever found is Jogurt/Yogurt from shining force.

I generally like to rotate in characters whenever I can.

First character that came to mind is Jean from Breath of Fire 2. His frog ability on the world map is fine for moving about the world map, but mostly redundant once you can travel the ocean, which you get shortly after recruiting him. He has bad stats and bad spells, aside from Warp (and better characters get this) and some instant death spells at higher levels (Nina gets these too). His transformation makes him okay but you generally get that after being done with 90% of the game (and the Holy Shaman is very tough to find without a guide), and other characters have good transformations anyway. Also, aside from using frog on the world map, he's never required in battle, so there's never a reason to level him. He's not even in the party for his main story arc.

Also, the first moment I can I drop Sharla in Xenoblade. You don't really need all of her healing Arts in that game, her Arts make it hard to do Chain Attack combos, and if I have to hear the phrase "My rifle's getting hotter!" one more time I'm going to go insane.

Its funny because this is actually a hugely outdated recommendation. Marcus is actually considered one of the best characters in the game now, due to how people have come around to evaluating characters in the series.

You still don't generally want to put all of your eggs in the one basket (basically just don't have him do literally everything by himself), but proper use of him makes the game much easier on the harder difficulties.

Anyway, I really don't not use many characters. As long as the cast isn't HUGE like Suikoden or Chrono Cross I will generally try to use everyone a decent bit, and even in those I still rotate more than most people probably would.

Yeah I try to rotate as much as possible in almost all games.

I generally try to use everyone in RPGs for the sake of variety (when possible).

When I was a kid, however, I generally just stuck to one party and benched everyone else (this backfired hard at the end of disc one lol)

My Endgame party is always Cloud/Tifa/Barret.

I could tell you my least favorite party members to use, but it usually coincides with the characters I like least.

I will say that while MOST characters on my list are characters I dislike some of them are purely bad mechanics on a character I'm somewhat lukewarm on

Like Lulu isn't bad but feels completely unnecessary
Cyan isn't the worst but his skill is anti-fun to use for me
Strago isn't awful but he's a lot of investment for a character you get later in the game and Lore doesn't do anything that normal magic can't for the most part, not worth it
Red XIII and Cid are just kinda meh and all the characters in FFVII are basically the same anyway so why not use ones you like more
