I never thought the day would come when I'd read the phrase "What ineffable twaddle" in an Ace Attorney game

also the "Beyond Logic" theme is super great and I really enjoy the presentation of this deduction battle mini-game

also also Susato's happy animation is adorable

It feels like there's a lot of banter between Naruhodo and Susato, and then you throw in Holmes on top of that, we might get a pretty high line count.

I feel like the series got away from a lot of the back and forth between the protagonist and the assistant, which might be why we have lower line counts relative to case length for the newer games. That might be an argument for counting total text boxes instead of just unbroken speeches.

I've never been one to criticize the work you do because it's so exhaustive and interesting, but I have always thought that total text boxes would be a more interesting count than unbroken lines of speech, even if it does favor some characters over others for various reasons (oldbag lol)

My gut feeling tells me that Ryunosuke probably talks less in each case vs the standard protagonist like Phoenix or Edgeworth, just because it feels like Kazuma/Susato/Sholmes/Iris take up a lot more oxygen than most deuteroganist casts (it's somewhat rare for two other characters to talk to each other in another AA game but they do it much more often here)

Maya talks a lot during investigations when she's around. I remember being kind of amazed at the difference between how many lines Maya would have during an investigation as opposed to Trucy or Kay. She would never lag behind Phoenix by that much, relatively speaking. Trials is where Phoenix would pull away because the assistant often doesn't have much to contribute other than a witty quip or a probing question from time to time.

Whew, finally reached the first save point. Not sure how much longer we have to go, but it's been fun keeping track of stuff so far.

Random Sherlock Holmes story recommendation: The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist, which contains one of the greatest one-liners I've ever read.

In this story, a man forces a woman to marry him in order to get a hold of her inheritance. However, another man who is in love with that woman storms upon the scene right after the ceremony. The first man attempts to gloat at his success.

First man: You're too late! She's my wife!

Second man: She's your widow!

*bang*

I'm kinda sad they don't give this other sailor a name when they give him a sprite and he has several lines.

also I love Hosonaga's fist pumping sprite, might be my favorite in the game so far

Sherlock's shadow boxing animation is great too because he's a top tier amateur boxer in the stories

Finished the second investigation segment. Wow, that was really short!

I also loved the exchange where Naruhodo asks Susato what kind of books Pavlova likes to read and she responds with, "It appears she likes to read books...that are written in Russian."

I enjoy this misleading of the players to believe this case would play out just like the Speckled Band story, with Pavlova's disguise being that of Grimesby Roylott (the name of the culprit in that story) and the supposed use of a poisonous serpent to kill the victim.

of course if you've never read the story then it probably makes no sense but Susato is there to poke holes in the logic of the story afterwards, which is great

I kind of appreciate the callback to one of the most obvious contradictions in series history from 2-1, about how a man with a broken neck couldn't write anything and how the message was nonsensical for the victim to write regardless

one of the nice touches of this localization is how Naruhodo and Susato switch between using Japanese honorifics and Mr/Miss/Mrs to indicate when they're supposed to be speaking English and when they're supposed to be speaking Japanese

also another similarity to 2-1 is Pavlova shoving Kazuma over a complete misunderstanding

this somber remix of Kazuma's theme is really good

I like the mental image of Phoenix having Kazuma's family sword hanging up in his room or something, and that sword bearing the name that would be given to two of his fiercest opponents

G1-2 complete! I feel like Naruhodo's statement toward the end sums up the case best: "Kazuma's death was such a waste."

So I get that's the feeling Takumi is attempting to evoke. It's meant to be a tragic accident born of a misunderstanding. It's just kind of a lame way to get rid of a character, especially one who has proven to be super likable at this point. I get you have to find a way to sideline Kazuma if you want Naruhodo to be the primary protagonist, but I think they could've handled it better.

I just wish I could clearly remember how all of this stuff comes back later because it's kind of bothering me, but I also don't want to look it up.

When I first saw Kazuma, I was like "oh my god, how dead can you be?" I've never been surer a character would die early than him, but I expected it to be some kind of conspiracy instead of a random event. No trial threw me for a loop; I kept expecting the ship to dock somewhere for an emergency trial with a new judge, but it never happened.

Being the tutorial case assistant doesn't turn out well for multiple characters...!

The complete lack of a trial or any sort of cross-examination probably makes G1-2 the most unorthodox case in the series because at least the Edgeworth games maintain the cross-examination aspect, even if it's not done in exactly the same way.

Somehow Maggey has had the best luck of all of them.

Yeah, he was totally another Mia Fey waiting to happen, especially when in the epliogue of G1-1, he starts spouting so many death flags I was wondering if they might try a swerve, especially as Jezaille Brett was doing her best 3-1 Dahlia impression to ensure I knew certain characters were playing certain homage roles.

This is going to be his biggest case in terms of total lines, I think.

But yeah, he probably is. I keep forgetting these characters have two games to pile up lines, not just one!

Yeah, I was surprised! You talk to Hosonaga in Kazuma's cabin, you talk to Holmes in the hallway, you investigate Pavlova's cabin, and that's it!

I'm looking through the bonus content for the first time and the music section includes unused tracks, which is really cool.

The unused court theme is a remix of the original PW1 court theme and it sounds pretty good, actually! I also like all the commentary throughout from the people who worked on the game.

Part of me thought about making the first part of G1-3 an investigation day, but you don't really investigate anything, so if anything, it's just a prolonged prologue for the trial.

This is true! I clocked it at 211 lines until we reached the Old Bailey.

But now we've got another conundrum with these nameless jurors. I know you learn some of their names, but not all of them. I'll have to make a way to distinguish between them in the line counts.

also when I get around to doing Layton/AA line counts, I'll have to make a distinction between the judges because I can't call them both the British Judge

I guess I can call GAA's the British Judge and Layton/AA's the English Judge since it's the English Turnabout

or I could call him Judge of the Old Bailey, since that's how they describe him in the artwork section of the bonus content

So we've got these two witnesses, Bruce Fairplay and Lay D. Furst. The latter is Adam Ladyfirst in Japanese, so it makes me a little sad that they changed it because it means my real name isn't represented in the English version of the game now!

But at the same time, Ladyfirst is a dumb last name that just doesn't exist in English, so I get why they changed it. Also, fun fact: In dowolf's fan translation LP of Ace Attorney Investigations 2, the surname he gave to the Debestes was Furst, if I'm remembering right. I do like a lot of the names dowolf chose there, but Debeste really is, well, the best name choice in that game.

I like that Naruhodo immediately assumes the M on the dagger sheath will turn out to really be a W in order to exonerate McGilded.

Another thing that's going to drive up line counts in this game is the ability to examine evidence. You get a lot of extra mileage from that.

Oh nice, Juror 5 makes a reference to Silver Blaze, which is a missing horse Holmes is tasked with finding in the aptly name "The Adventure of Silver Blaze."

Hit the first save point in G1-3. I feel like this would normally be the point where court would adjourn for the day, and we'd get an investigation day before we resume, but that's not the case here. I like McGilded as a defendant because there are things that are clearly fishy about him, but you're still predisposed to believe your client is innocent.

At this point, the case has about as many lines as 3-1.

all right I kinda get the idea that someone could've planted blood inside the carriage during the chaos of Gina's smoke grenade (although I don't know where the blood could've come from or how they preserved it for use), but I don't know how you remove the stuff from underneath the seat because you have to put it somewhere and it's not exactly easy to transport for one person unless there are other unknown conspirators here

and the judge says no one could corroborate van Zieks' claim that the omnibus has been tampered with but I'm pretty sure the officers who inspected it after the crime could have!

Thinking back on it, it's so extremely rare for the prosecution in Ace Attorney to get completely shut down like that. Fittingly, the only other time I can distinctly recall it happening is in 2-4 after de Killer names Adrian as the client. That might be a tell in this series that your client is guilty!

I gotta say, it feels kind of...convenient that the judge basically says that since the evidence by the prosecution wasn't compelling enough, there's no need for the jury to weigh in. Like, what's the point of having the jury if the judge can just override them? I get they're supposed to work in tandem, but at least let them have some input.

I guess it'd be a tough sell to say they'd all vote Not Guilty in this situation, but in that case, just have it be a 3-3 split and let the judge have the tiebreaker or something.

It feels so strange that at the end of G1-2, Ryunosuke says that Kazuma's death was such a waste, and at the end of G1-3, the foreman of the jury says this has all been a grand waste of time. If that's the feeling Takumi wants the player to experience, he's doing a good job, but it's a strange decision! He's really playing the long game here!

That being said, I like how when the judge declares the verdict of Not Guilty, there's ticker tape, but there's no cheering but rather the gallery in commotion like when something unexpected happens. That was a nice touch.

I mean, the court system is so biased towards the prosecution in this series that the only way it could really happen is in the event of tampering, like De Killer lying about his client or the true culprit having false evidence planted in the omnibus carriage.

All right, G1-3 officially complete! I remember transience asking in his topic what McGilded was actually planning to do if Ryunosuke had never shown up.

My impression is that he had Gina in his pocket the whole time, and he would have brought her up with him from the start like he was asking Ryunosuke to do before he realized he was sent to be his defense. Also, based on his comment in the epilogue about how he pays a lot of the salaries in Scotland Yard with his "taxes," he probably does have some of those guys in his back pocket, too (which would explain my earlier objection about how you remove the baggage from under the seat, if so). He believed he could buy his way out of it, and based on this outcome, he was probably right.

Speaking of Gina, she's an interesting decision by Takumi. Lestrade is one of the prominent Scotland Yard inspectors in the Sherlock Holmes stories (probably the most well known overall, which makes it another interesting choice that they went with Gregson as the primary rival inspector in GAA), and his first name was never known. He was only ever listed as G. Lestrade, so I guess Takumi took the opportunity to create Gina Lestrade since there isn't a canon first name for the character.

I do really enjoy this case overall, but it really requires taking the game in totality to appreciate what they did here. Which is also kind of the problem with the game. None of these cases really feel standalone.
