He did the same thing in G1-4!

Van Zieks has been a competent prosecutor.

I've only played GAA1, not 2, and I'll hope off the topic once you get there, but if we're only taking into account the first game, he is very unimpressive and boring. He also has the worst 'surprised' animation of every prosecutor, where he just clutches his heart. And that includes von Karma just kind of raising his head slightly.

Well, the major characters aren't very flamboyant. The one with the wildest animations is Ryunosuke. I get people love eccentric AA characters, but I appreciate that Susato and Van Zieks are just people who are very good at what they do. They are also products of their time, which is why they're more subdued by comparison.

The most boring major character is the judge, who is just so by the book and it makes me appreciate even more what the original judge brings to the series.

I dunno, I feel like Van Zieks does get a bit extra sometimes, like when he just yeets wine bottles into the gallery. It's a sort of understated extra I suppose.

Yeah, that's his version of showboating, but compare that to air guitar, breaking shackles, weird bead things, a whip, and goggles and throwing coffee mugs.

Van Zieks is more in the vein of Edgeworth or Manfred, who are just cerebral and intense.

Well, Susato GAA2 spoilers does do the same wild animations as Ryunosuke when in 2-1.

Zieks also slams his leg on the desk. But he is one of the few main prosecutors to not physically assault the defense alongside Edgeworth and Klavier.
Shout-outs to Barnham too.

I have noticed the criticism of Van Zieks being largely unwarranted. I think he's pretty good.

I like that Graydon's "transformation" is merely removing his hat and throwing it at Ryunosuke.

The series kinda got carried away with transformations the last couple of games, so it's nice of them to scale it back a bit. Not every villain needs a big reveal!

I don't think there's been any real transformations so far. The closest we came was McGilded laughing after he got away with it.

(GAA2 spoilers) It makes me sad that he completely disappears in the second game. I'm guessing his role was a casualty of the reduction from three games to two.

That was the experimentative trial run (which was deliberately enginerred that way so Kristoph Gavin wouldn't know of their existence until it was obvious he was guilty). You could easily explain that between AJ and DD, they tweaked the system so the insight of the common person would play a bigger factor in the trials themselves.

DD in general likes to believe AJ doesn't exist

I'm fine with no jury content in DD and SOJ. It doesn't really fit either theme of the game, anyways. That said, I'd be OK with the jury coming back in AA7, especially with how it's implemented in GAA2. I'm not sure how they're going to twist themselves lore-wise to do that, but it's Ace Attorney. That's what they're skilled at.

Well, Phoenix says at one point he has to accept his responsibility in facilitating the rise of the Dark Age of the Law. We all assume he means the forged evidence thing, but you could add that to the mix.

And I sorta get why DD tried to minimize anything from AJ because they wanted to reestablish good faith with the fanbase again, but I'm glad they walked some of that back in SoJ once they knew the fans were back on board.

I'm not sure of the significance of the name Ashley Graydon (maybe "Ash Gray," as opposed to his sterling white appearance), but his original last name, Milverton, comes from a Holmes story called "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton." I'd classify it as a high tier Holmes story, for the record.

I suppose the irony here is that Charles Augustus Milverton was a blackmailer, and in this case, Graydon's father was the victim of a blackmailer in Magnus McGilded.

maybe I should do a Holmes story ranking after I finish this case in the event anyone is actually interested in picking up Holmes after playing the games

so I guess the big question (for line counts) going into the second game is if Ryunosuke can catch Apollo

him not being in case 1 is probably the main thing that will keep it close

I suspect that GAA's line counts may be a touch inflated just by there being a lot more random interjecting from bit players, especially jury and such. G1-5 is pretty long, but is it really longer than 2-4 and 3-5?

Looks like we all underestimated the line counts. Ryunosuke, Susato, Sholmes, Iris, the Old Bailey Judge, Van Zieks and a character from the next game are all going to beat Godot.
