Very fitting that McGilded had almost the exact same number of lines as Matt Engarde!

Also, if you have some better ideas for the descriptions for the jurors, feel free to suggest them!

All right, G1-3 officially complete! I remember transience asking in his topic what McGilded was actually planning to do if Ryunosuke had never shown up.

I don't know why McGilded was unrepresented anyway, since case 5 establishes that everyone is entitled to a public defender unless they turn it down, and I don't understand why McGilded would do that.

Well, the reason given in the game is that no one dares to stand up to the Reaper, so I guess in that situation, even the public defender refused to take the case!

That was the impression I got as well. Though, McGilded has a reason to turn down the public defender, as his plan to contaminate the crime scene won't be comprised if say, the public defender realizes what's happening and decides not to play along. Then, some weird kid from a faraway land shows up and McGilded realizes he can get professional help that would also be naive enough to take his sabotage of the omnibus at face value.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense, that McGilded thinks Ryunosuke is naive enough to play along while a public defender wouldn't be.

I still don't really understand McGilded's plan. I assumed that he was going to try to buy off the judge/jury either through literal money or just through sheer goodwill, since he's such a popular guy the jury would easily side with him, but THEN it would turn out that Van Zieks isn't fucking around and actually convinces the jury he's guilty, and THEN suddenly McGilded would be really surprised and the whole thing would be off the rails, and that's when McGilded would enact his plan B. That isn't really how it played out though? The way it played out, the whole jury voted guilty right away without McGilded attempting to really do shit, and it was only Susato pulling out the summation examination that saved him - otherwise he was fucked. McGilded was absurdly lucky to be able to pull off anything he did! If Ryunosuke and Susato weren't really good at their jobs, then his scheme wouldn't have worked.

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe he thought he could buy his way out of prison, even if he was voted guilty. But I guess he probably assumed Ryunosuke was competent enough not to get him voted guilty right away because I assume Gina was his Plan A until he showed up.

Theres also the superstition at play here. I believe McGilded is actually the person who initially mentions the curse of Van Zieks. Though McGilded definitely had a plan to escape his crime, if he believed in the rumors, then he knew his number was already up since he was guilty as sin, so perhaps a Guilty verdict because he takes a gamble on Ryunosuke wouldnt be the worst case scenario. Especially when you consider that escaping the courtroom via Gina is also an option, and might even serve as a way to evade the curse since he technically got the correct verdict. The trade off would be that he has to spend the rest of his days evading the law, but thats not hard for a guy with his resources in a time before modern surveillance.

I don't feel like I got that impression from him. He taunts van Zieks at the end like he's gotten away with it, and even when he warns McGilded that this is far from over, it doesn't seem to rattle him, at least not outwardly.

Hmmm...So if Soseki Natsume is 33 during this case, that would make it the year 1900 or 1901. He was in England from 1901-1903, so I guess that would be the range of this game.

...Of course the Great Exhibition from GAA2 took place in 1851, so I guess Takumi's playing fast and loose with history here! Plus, we're technically in an alternate reality in the Ace Attorney world anyway.

I like that one of the English phrases Soseki said he kept repeating to the police was "I'm fine."

Susato refers to the King of Bohemia visiting Holmes at Baker Street, and it's a reference to one of the earliest Holmes stories, appropriately entitled "A Scandal in Bohemia." The story introduced a character named Irene Adler. Moriarty is known now as Holmes' greatest rival, but Irene Adler was the first character who could rival him and earn his respect.

Yeah, they played it really loose with the chronology. Another thing is that the monarch is Queen Victoria, who died in January 1901, so the game either has to take place in 1900 or Ace Attorney Queen Victoria lived longer than the actual one. Also, I think "I Am a Cat" ended up being published years before it actually was.

Now that I think about it, it's kind of ironic that Brett belittled the Japanese police force for not being able to secure evidence, and then we see the same thing happening in G1-3.

I think GAA is partially a tribute to the role Sherlock Holmes played in advancing forensic science in investigations (such as his obsession with knowing the difference between types of cigar ash), so you're seeing how messed up things could be in a trial before that.

I enjoy the various Holmes references at Baker Street. Also, I knew Iris had a penchant for giving literally everyone nicknames, so I wondered what they'd settle on in the English version. Susie for Susato seemed like an obvious one, but Ryunosuke's name doesn't lend itself to anything in English other than Ryu (but only because of Street Fighter). "Runo" is a solid choice because it would be difficult for someone like Iris to make that "Ryu" sound in English.

They also went with Hurley for Holmes, but I wonder what they'd have gone with if they could've used the real name. Surely not Sherley, you'd think...?

Whew, investigation day for G1-4 complete! Man, that was a super long investigation day that only netted two pieces of evidence, one of which was a map. I'm assuming this is only one investigation day and one trial day based on the number of lines we racked up here.

To further complicate matters, the newspaper about the Great Exhibition in 2-3 has a side article describing a real event that took place in 1848...!

And Garrideb talks about something that happened to him in 1869, so this is all kinds of screwy!

Speaking of which, the name comes from the Holmes story, "The Adventure of the Three Garridebs," which is about a man who stays shut up inside his house. There is a John Garrideb in that story, but he's not the one who's a shut-in, ironically.

Also, there's a bookmark that's written from Mary to James that gets John in trouble with Joan, and I'm pretty sure this is a reference to the fact that Watson was explicitly called James in one of the early stories (he's very rarely referred to by anything other than Watson in the stories), and Mary was the name of his wife.

If the game does take place in 1900, that makes it 31 years ago and John is 46, so it's not that screwy.

They also mention how they want to surpass the last World's Fair in Paris, all of which took place after the real Great Exhibition, so something here doesn't match with reality. And the Crystal Tower seems to be a mix of the Crystal Palace and Eiffel Tower, so I don't think it was meant to be the real Great Exhibition in the first place.

Yeah, he doesn't have any gimmick or odd design like most of the jurors. He's just...rational.

Although not modern and metropolitan like juror 2!

Also one thing I've noticed about this game that I don't like is how it's diminished the importance of the cross-examination. The end of case 1 doesn't have one. Case 2 doesn't have any at all. There isn't a big one in case 3 since you don't actually catch the killer. Case 4 has had 4 cross-examinations, and 2 of them have just led to summation examinations.

Like I said, I enjoy the summation examination to an extent. The second one here in case 4 was cool in how you had to draw out all the right statements to continue the trial. But cross-examinations have been the bread and butter of the series since the beginning, and it feels like they don't matter as much here, which is sad.

Yeah, I like that guy. He reminds me of the spiky hair guy in Quiplash. Very plucky.

My thoughts on multiple witnesses and Summation Examinations is that they wanted to keep the spirit of cross-examinations but not in a way that can be solved through cross-examination. You have evidence and contradictions, its just presented to the player in a different way. I like the new ideas but I wish they were more explored and less of an alternate solution, if you follow me.

Yeah, the thing with the summation examination is that it doesn't focus on finding contradictions. All you have to do is create enough reasonable doubt to convince the jurors the trial should continue.

Like, the idea that the knife fell from the window isn't based on any real evidence at the time. Ryunosuke just had to craft a scenario where that COULD have happened (and Van Zieks dashes the logic behind it minutes later!).

Speaking of Van Zieks, he's been really good in this case. It felt like he didn't do much in case 3 (not a great way to establish the competence of a prosecutor by having the guilty party run circles around him, but I guess it was more to establish the concept of the Reaper's Curse and that no one escapes it), but he's been on top of things here.

I love the Beates. They're either the second or third happily married couple in the series (depending on how you count Tahrust and Behleeb Inmee in 6-3), so it's actually kind of refreshing to see.

Gonna try and go over each case in my head to see how many I can think of.

Okay so there's the DeLites... I think the Kitakis are still together and IIRC they're happy enough. And I'm pretty sure the couple in 6-6 got married.

Well, they weren't married during 6-6! They got married at the end! But yeah, I guess they can technically count.

And I always forget the Kitakis. It feels strange to call them happily married, but I suppose it works.

I did, in fact. I know they show up again later (spoilers), so I looked up their English names.

Yeah, they don't make the overall count unless they have at least 10 lines.

And yet somehow it's true. I definitely felt its length. It plays like 6-2 where each investigation and trial day basically is two rolled into one.

Not a great idea if you ask me because it has a tendency to drag on if you're not careful, but they seem to be rolling with it here!

Case 5 is The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story, and it's referring to The Hound of the Baskervilles, perhaps the most famous Sherlock Holmes story, for good reason. If you wanted to read one Sherlock Holmes story just to see what the big deal is, this is the one I would recommend. It's one of the four full-length novels, and it's one of the very few Holmes stories that has a supernatural element to it.

Oh, nice, you get trophy for getting the conversation about "the woman" by examining the mantle here, which is the aforementioned Irene Adler (Holmes rarely refers to her by name; she is just "the woman" most of the time).
