This will be a bit of a different playthrough since I've already seen LPs of both games. I didn't think we'd ever get them, so I went ahead and watched them since I wanted to know how they went, story-wise. However, I won't openly spoil beyond where I am in the game, so for you newbies, you can follow without fear in that regard. I enjoyed my experience with them so much that they inspired me to read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, and it really kickstarted my mystery genre fandom.

Anyway, the main reason I'm doing a separate topic instead of just posting in the SELF topic like I normally would is that I plan to do line counts and time stats for these games, and I know some of the people who'd be interested in that don't follow that topic (to my knowledge). If you're not familiar with it, I played through the series a few years ago and kept track of how many lines of dialogue are in each case to see which case was the biggest in that regard, and then I played through again and personally timed how long each case was to see which one took me the most time to beat. I've saved all that info on Google Docs if you want to check them out.

Time stats: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qSdmjcbQjG_QPBFylHNgk7oVXRbsSjDetdO8w7Ygh8k

Line counts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sBPDmATQERIv7R3VvvXx43DRJZNOwnSwmLkZhfWLqSc

So the plan here is for me to play through once and do line counts, and then immediately replay it to do time stats (since the goal is to time it based on just going straight through and not getting stuck anywhere along the way). I'll update the numbers each time I finish a case. Oh right, one "line" of dialogue is just one uninterrupted speech by the same character, regardless of the number of text boxes it takes.

I do intend to give my thoughts on the cases, the characters, and all that, too, but this is my primary motivator.

So here we go.

Would love to contribute to this topic, but mine is sitting on my shelf for a while until I finish a few others on the backlog. Have fun!

For various reasons, I barely played tonight (only up to the first cross-examination), but it's still nice to have a new(ish) AA game to play again.

Random fun fact: I don't know if the game openly reveals this or if they changed it in English to complete the reference, but Kazuma's sword is called Karuma, which is Manfred and Franziska's surname in Japanese. Not sure if they renamed it Karma in English or not, but I guess we'll see!

It's nice that the Switch version has trophies/achievements, and they even have their own sound effect. I bought the Switch version just because it's been so long since I've had a physical copy of an Ace Attorney game, so I'm glad I don't miss out on that part of it!

Didn't they outright say that an Asogi disciple named themselves after the sword? I took that to mean they were the von Karma's ancestor.

Oh right, I seem to recall that, now that you mention it. That would seem to be the implication, yes.

Made it to the first checkpoint. If anyone is interested in a line count sneak preview, this is what we've got so far:

The Adventure of the Great Departure (G1-1)

Ryunosuke Naruhodo - 273
Kazuma Asogi - 175
Taketsuchi Auchi - 92
The Japanese Judge - 74
Iyesa Nosa - 55
Kyurio Korekuta - 37
Satoru Hosonaga - 32
Yujin Mikotoba - 16
Susato Mikotoba - 1
Sherlock Holmes - 1

(I assumed the person narrating the opening cutscene was Holmes, but I legit couldn't tell. If I made a mistake there, let me know)

(I'm also not sure if I should just call him Sherlock Holmes here or go along with this Herlock Sholmes business)

Also, it's interesting they spell it Jezaille Brett here. I guess it's an attempt to make it look like a more feminine name, but her name is a reference to the jezail bullet, which is what John Watson was shot with in the army in the stories. Makes for a fitting name in this case!

Gotta say, not a fan of Auchi's Objection. I think they were trying to recapture the shrill nature of Winston's, but it ends up sounding more like that Flynch guy from Layton/Ace Attorney.

Also, I enjoy reading the protagonist's dialogue aloud for story-driven games, so I've been reading Naruhodo's dialogue with a (hopefully passable) British accent.

It's interesting that Naruhodo prides himself on his powers of observation, which would make him more akin to Edgeworth or even Apollo than Phoenix.

The chemistry between Naruhodo and Kazuma is so good, and it's neat that you can really see the moment when Naruhodo takes the lead on the case.

Also, Brett is a nice throwback to the Dahlia Hawthorne type of dainty yet deadly villainess.

And now we have the missing green glass bottle like 4-1, except it's carbonated water (which is gross, by the way) instead of grape juice.

All right, reached the second save point and we've surpassed 6-1 for the third most lines in an intro case thus far. It'll certainly pass 4-1 for second, but passing E2-1 for first will be difficult at this pace, I think.

I like that there's sort of an indirect reference to the end of 3-1 when Brett actually consumes the poisoned bottle, like how Mia challenged Dahlia and Winston to do.

I doubt I'll catch you unless you take a break from playing! My pace will be fairly slow. I think I'm almost done with this first case though.

Turning the victim around in the chair after he was killed to make it look like he was killed from a different angle is another similarity to 4-1.

Whew, G1-1 complete! There were several lines toward the end that I understood the significance of because of stuff that's revealed later, but I won't mention that here. I get the complaints I'm seeing in other topics that the ends of these cases feel pretty unsatisfying because, in this instance, Brett is basically going to get off scot-free despite Naruhodo essentially proving she did it.

I guess the "problem" here is that Takumi is basically writing one big mystery novel with Great Ace Attorney, and every mystery novel needs a hook to move on to the next part of the mystery. There is literally no satisfying resolution of any kind until the very end. Each event just builds on the overarching plot until the big reveal at the end. However, this approach is very un-Ace Attorney-like, so it might be hitting the wrong notes for some people as a result because it's not delivering the satisfying climaxes you're used to getting from each individual case (with very few exceptions up until now).

As for me, I did enjoy the case. Brett was a solid villain. She employed a lot of misdirection in a classic mystery style, constantly trying to prevent you from focusing on what you should really be paying attention to. Naruhodo and Kazuma were great together. I loved Kazuma's statement at the end that Auchi's clan would never in a thousand years measure up to Naruhodo's clan, and we see that being fulfilled in Phoenix's beatdowns of the Payne brothers!

PW1 would have the fewest lines of any game in the series by a wide margin if not for 1-5.

It sort of makes sense. Every character above him except for Klavier and the Judge is either a protagonist, an investigation assistant, or has at least two separate cross-examinations.

Yeah, he's still top 25 for the series, and there are only 11 characters who have significantly more lines than him, and we'd say those are probably the most important characters in the series (along with Mia, who hangs in strong at 12th despite being dead for most of the series and hasn't been seen since the OT!).

I'm confident Naruhodo and Susato surpass him by the time this is over, for sure. Probably Van Zieks, too. Not sure if anyone else from GAA will.

Line counts are of course a little misleading too, since it's entire unbroken sentences and not total text boxes, and Godot has a little bit of a habit of monologuing even by AA character standards.

Can you bold the changes to the big lists? It's really hard to see all of the changes when there's so many characters to scroll through.

I'd guess that Iris passes Godot too, since Ray managed it and they're both in that weird backup partner spot.

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, if Kazuma got nearly halfway there in just one case as an assistant, I think Iris is nearly a guarantee to pass Godot.

This is also true. He does have a few of those. I don't know that total text boxes would shift the rankings too much because I feel like things eventually balance out in the end though.

Yeah, I'll do that for future updates.

I don't count flashback lines. I also don't count "..." as a line since nothing was spoken.

I do try to get wrong answer dialogue when it's a multiple choice situation. I'll just save and reload afterwards. I don't try to get every single piece of wrong answer dialogue though because it would just take too long, especially with the older games where saving and reloading over and over is kind of a hassle. If I happen upon it naturally, I'll count it though. I don't make a lot of unintentional mistakes though since I'm pretty familiar with most of the games.

So I get that what I'm doing isn't going to be 100% accurate, but it at least gives us a ballpark estimate to work with.

I actually almost asked about that, but decided you probably did count ellipses, so I didn't. Interesting.

Well, Grossberg is a backup for a much shorter tutorial case, and he's absent for half of it, to boot.

Iris will probably come close, but I feel like she has fairly minor roles (or none at all in the first few here), so she may not get there. I think Holmes will end up with more lines, and I'm not sure he'll beat Godot either.

G1-2 is entitled The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band, derived from the Sherlock Holmes story of (almost) the same name (the word "Unbreakable" isn't in the original title). It might be the most critically acclaimed of the short stories. Although not my personal favorite, it is indeed quite good. A lot of Sherlock's erroneous deductions in this game are summaries of the stories each case is based on, for the record.

I won't spoil the details of the story in case someone is inspired by these games to read Sherlock Holmes (as I was), although perhaps the statute of limitations has expired at this point, and the intro gives some of the details anyway.
