I'd rather get some more BD1 songs than those from BD2.... Sunlight Filtering Through the Trees ftw! (the wrong one got in last year)

I have just one more day to finish up wrapping up my revised rankings before we hit R2! I decided to forget about the bottom two-thirds and have been working me way up the list (to revise the scores) starting at about #80. I worked on #30 through #11 today--working on the higher portion of the list is so much fun because the music is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! (especially if I prepare myself to be in a proper music mood)

super sonic racing was the round 1 sonic r rep in bost5, it won, and the whole soundtrack did adequately well there (got to round 3, lost to blue reflection while still putting up a fight, and in the losers bracket the thing to take it out was literally octopunch of all songs)

but super sonic racing only showed up as the rep for the game once.

everlasting love getting a 0.6/10 from mycro is a little surprising to me. i love that song, even though i didn't vote for it!

Before updating VGMC compat again, I thought I would highlight my own compatability rankings as of the end of round 1. I find it amusing.

Let's have a look at the most tight-knit groups formed by our first 128 matches! These are with a min. participation of 80%:

Only two groups have the distinction of having everyone be at least 75% compatible with each other! Collen-Gamebop-hotdog is a familiar set from last year, and even more impressive is the CHz-sergio-Haste-kao-cako-Tox hexagram! Add Place in there and everyone still has 72% with each other?!?


lem-xp-TRE-Snajed is also full of 70s, just missing Snajed-xp at 68.0. There's also lem-Janus-Dire, and while both groups are connected by lem they're also different enough that you have to go down to 68.0 to add another link between Snajed and Dire!

Oh, wow, and now suddenly Heartless Being is saying he wants to retire, too! And yargh, I'm tired of seeing Exa Pico struggling in matches it shouldn't struggle with.

Because I'm weird, I wanted to see how the first round of this contest would have gone if we had the voters from LAST year. (I have to find some new weird thing involving voter data every year!) After finding out there are 42 voters this year who voted in at least half of VGMC 14's matches, I created results specifically from those 42 voters! Oh, and before you go thinking these mock results are wildly inaccurate, I also recreated the VGMC 14 results using specifically those 42 voters... hardly anything changed at all.

RFTM > GSC, Stella < BlackRock, Threat < Rocky Path, and World's End < Besaid are all pretty interesting to see! That last one has the song positions swapped in the sheet but I don't think it breaks anything.

the list of ratios is actually really interesting to me, because it shows that having more voters is what prevented a lot of these extreme single-digit blowouts that used to be more common to see.

that's a change that i value a lot actually. i always got sad seeing like "3-50" level of extremes in results

though maybe we'll see more now that matchups may get less balanced in avoiding sff in bracket design and things in r2-beyond

They're fun in small doses, but I'm sure the nominator feels like crap when they happen. Unless the nominator agrees and the loser was just hopelessly outmatched, which does happen from time to time.

Basically confirms what I think we've known for a while, though -- there will never be a unanimous match in VGMC. I'm honestly very curious if we could even force such a match just by picking some song off the retired list that's universally loved and a track that's universally reviled.

anyway i may regret saying this but damn the new group really has it out for me

i thought i'd probably lucked out with all the narrow victories for my noms and supports, but in truth it's kind of the opposite, as none of those would've been close before, not to mention causing the lily match to be drastically more lopsided despite the other trends (to think it could've nearly avoided a doubling...) :(

overall from a vague look at all of them, there were 17 results i liked more because of new crowd and 46 i didn't (the rest i didn't care much either way)

It's interesting looking at the bracket leaderboards after round 1. deo's in the top 10 on all four, and Mycro's in the top 5 for all but B, including deo being #1 on A/D and Mycro being #1 on C. This contest's really treating them well!

i feel like you would have a hard time finding an example of either "universal" extreme in a current crowd this large and diverse. you would most likely have to rig it in a very specific way. deliberately creating SFF where everyone interested in a certain thing will think the alternate example of said thing is better, etc. cancelling out any of the small group who'd be interested in the weaker track by putting it against something everyone who'd like the weaker track would like even more

i think the point was that songs that are alienating still have fans.

crazy bus is like the #1 or near #1 favorite song of a number of people who vote in this contest also (it also didn't do even near the poorest during the contest it was in)

tbh this mostly just means that the songs that are weak are less going to be songs that are weird/alienating, because things like that "stand out" and usually have enough shock to interest certain people (which is maybe even a reductive way to describe it)

a lot of the biggest blowouts were like some "random" "boring song" against something really powerful.

so if you took one of those matches, but refined the concept of them to a case where the single digit few people that liked the weaker song in the match would still vote for the opponent over it, that's where you could get a 0-50 or whatever

But people will antivote the other song if they don't like that! You need a song that one partition will like more than the other and the other partition will hate less, which is a tricky combo outside of SFFs
