These states stopping federal unemployment benefits is completely senseless when Biden already allocated the money till September.

It's not senseless if you think that poor unemployed people are only poor or unemployed as a result of their own moral failings, and that your responsibility is to punish them accordingly.

Alternatively, it's not senseless if you believe the unemployment benefits are causing a severe labor shortage and we need to force the poor back to work to save businesses. (Of course, there is the question of whether businesses would have better luck with hiring if they paid more and/or made the jobs less unpleasant, but we all know they won't try that.)

Similarly, my favorite thinkpieces are the ones about industries that millennials have "killed" for that very reason. If the industry hasn't adapted to a changing consumer base by either differentiating its strategies for marketing, pricing, or product development / product offerings, then the industry deserves to die.

Golf courses are the size of neighborhoods; they are excessive by design, and the pompous culture of avid golfers leans into that hard.

I remember my golf outings when I worked for a major financial services firm. Our managing partner would force the office to go out for an occasional golf day as a "thank you" after busy seasons. It was basically another day of work since none of the millennials wanted to be there dealing with snide remarks and side-eyes from the entitled old pricks who golfed there all the time. I'd honestly rather have just been at the office, and everyone would have preferred the day off instead.

Golf sucks and I'm glad the youth are killing it.

And no, I'm not referring to putt-putt or top golf. Those are fine.

Golf is doing better than ever because of COVID. The muni courses I visit are packed with regular everyday people just trying to have fun.

Yes, golf is more expensive to play then basketball or soccer. Obviously. Now think about hockey or football or even baseball. There's a lot more equipment you need to buy than you're thinking.

Before the pandemic, you could get a starter set of clubs, some balls, and some tees for <$200. Greens fees for the cheaper 18 holes muni courses are $35-45 and are less for juniors/seniors.

It is entirely doable for middle class people to play golf and to say otherwise is ridiculous.

Now if you want to talk about the cost to create and run a golf course, that's an entirely separate argument. I agree that golf courses are not an efficient use of land.

I'm not trying to start a fight, but does this mean that the budget options for a day of golfing would run someone $35-45? That's very expensive for a major sport, especially before factoring in equipment purchases.

Other sports that have traditionally had their own financial barriers to entry - like tennis and swimming - have tons of free options. I've never heard of a free golf course.

Obviously, the argument isn't that golf is completely exclusive to rich people, but that its prohibitive cost make it much more likely for rich people to take it up as a hobby, and that alone makes it more difficult for the middle-class and poor to do the same (because the rich won't want them around).

I'm sorry you have a hate-on for golf for whatever reason, but I've golfed tons of times with my friends who weren't financially well off at plenty of decent courses, and they primarily played with clubs they bought for cheap or got gifted.

If you treat it like a hobby, like a vast majority of people who golf do, then it's only as expensive as you want it to be, and at the ground it isn't that expensive at all.
