Not surprising from Comey, and it's consistent with everything he's said and done before. I actually agree with him here on the principle that no President or candidate who receives the support of about half the country should face criminal prosecution, because it's too prone to abuse and the people's right to a democracy must be protected. But he should have just said that instead of creating his BS "extremely careless" standard that he applied to Hillary alone. Or else, he could have just stayed silent on the matter, which is the normal way you handle things if you aren't going to prosecute.

California has a jungle primary, so there's a good chance it will be 2 Democrats in the general. I haven't looked into her voting record but I don't remember her doing anything obnoxious, so I am open to voting for her depending on her opponent.

It's because they don't think they did anything wrong. Or at least they've been given so much slack up until this point that they believe that no one else will think they did anything wrong. All they have to do is explain their side of the story and shift blame to [Insert Buzzword] and everything will be a-okay, just like it always is.

For the most part they're right. I don't expect many consequences for any of the GOP involved in this outside of 'boo-hoo I lost a book deal and people don't like me :('.

One part of the Trump story recently that has been lost...Storming the capitol is a perfectly relevant response to an election being stolen.

The caveat here of course is that this was a free and fair election, there was no voter fraud, no evidence of voter fraud, and Trump is nothing but a loser. But Trump and many Representatives and a few Senators decided to perpetuate this lie.

Of course, a bunch of white Supremacists/Nazis also latched on this idea and mixed with the average blissful ignorance Trump supporter to further their own causes(And storm the capitol together).

Every single one of these assholes should be held accountable for this. But they wont be. They have an opportunity to scapegoat Trump for this and take a fake moral highground, but I'm not sure they are even going to be willing to go that far.

The ones up for re-election in 2022 will be in the most danger of being forced out through a primary challenge, or possibly in the general election if it's a state that's not solid Republican. It's the 2024 and 2026 re-election cycles where enough time would have passed since the riots at the Capitol where a lot of voters won't care about their actions by then. Plus 2024 will happen at the same time as a presidential election is happening.

1. When negotiating, start by asking for the moon.
2. Everything in life is a negotiation.
3. Money is nothing more than an idea we made up.
4. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, admit you were the slightest bit wrong about anything.

He is right though. The impeachment trial is Trump's last, best, chance to win reelection in 2024. I think right now he's done, he's lost just about the entire center and a big part of the right. If the election was held again now Trump loses in a landslide. And this is probably not something that is going to be buried under a new scandal and forgotten, because it struck at the heart of democracy itself.

But if the Senate acquits Trump - then it becomes substantially easier for him to proclaim his innocence and have people believe it. Of course if the Senate convicts Trump then that ends his political career by law. But he would lose anyway without the trial, so his best shot is probably to go to trial and hope 34 Republican senators refuse to convict.

But, at this point I don't believe Trump has been putting much concern to the 2024 election the past 2 months. If he had been thinking rationally about that, he would have conceded immediately, congratulated Biden, and maybe launched his 2024 campaign.

first question still is whether trump is gonna do a broad pardon or not. assuming he doesn't, the ones you can expect to be punished for more than misdemeanors (i.e., fines, max year in jail) on a guilty plea are probably the more serious actors and the really stupid ones. there's a good chunk of those, especially to the ones that beat on the cops, though those may take a bit of time. you'll be hearing of arrests for a good year unless, again, trump goes ham on the pardon there.

Were you under this impression because anyone said it anywhere, or was it because you are that much of a Democrat? (this part is a jokey quip not an insult)

I say this because the Democratic Party ran on "We'll get you $2000 checks" after the $600 checks, and just typing "Biden 2000 checks" into google, literally everything the campaign or media is reporting on specifically says the phrase "$2000 checks", which is not "We'll get you up to 2000 including the 600 Trump gave you".
