Switch is the only one I've done this with.

The only other system that I've even bought within a year of launch was 3DS (after the price drop). GBA is probably right on the line, but I think I missed the one year mark by a few days. But I plan to get a PS5 ASAP (was unable to secure a pre-order).

For the switch, I went to a midnight release with my brother not planning to get one. But when I played Breath of the wild that night, I knew I had to have it immediately I went to a different store at store opening and got it.

Never. Aside from the fact that you might be able to get it cheaper later, very few systems have ever had enough depth on launch day to justify it.

I had an N64 very close to launch, though, as a Christmas present.

I pre-ordered N64, 3DS, Xbox One, and Switch. I bought GBA very early but I don't remember for sure if it was Day One or just sometime in Week One. If we count hardware revisions, I also picked up DS Lite, 3DS XL, and New 3DS XL on launch, and I pre-ordered the Pokemon Sword & Shield Switch Lite for my kid, though I didn't give it to him until Xmas.

Huh, Xbox One really stands out among all those Nintendo consoles, doesn't it. What can I say, I needed Killer Instinct.

EDIT: I guess if we count Kickstarter, I also pre-ordered Ouya, Arduboy, and something called GCW-Zero. And in terms of retro clones, I pre-ordered the RetroUSB AVS, and the Analogue Super Nt and Mega Sg.

Im not sure about literally the first day... very close to the first day for sure, but I think I had to go hunting around a bit to get a Wii U and Switch... Wii, DS or 3DS could have been day 1, I dont remember anymore really.

Im going to try to buy a PS5 tomorrow but obviously wont get my hands on it for a few days at least.

DS was the only one, I used to wait until Christmas for my parents to buy me whatever the new thing was but it came out in March over here and I really wanted to play it, so it was like a delayed Xmas present from the previous year.

These days I usually wait a couple years for a new gen to get settled in with a bunch of games and a price drop before bothering. No intention of getting the new consoles for a while.

It sounded like you were going to try hitting up stores, if so Sony is saying there's going to be none on the shelves at launch and to order online. Not sure when they're coming to shelves.

No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) please dont plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.

I got a PS4 preorder at launch cuz (iirc) they were plentiful, i do not remember struggling to get one

everything else was not worth the hustle to get on day 1, too much bullshit and artificial scarcity

I will not be getting any new consoles at launch

No, I don't think so. I don't necessarily always wait for a sale or price drop, but it's when I'm ready to get it. Shortages don't help. I think Gamecube was fairly early.

Yeah I meant online. It took me all day of trying multiple sites are every chance but I finally managed to get one in the Walmart 9pm window

What I will say is it's bullshit that you can get to confirm payment and then still be kicked back on Walmart. That happened on all 3 of my previous tries in the day and I has a CC stored already. I feel like once it gets to the payment section it should be reserved

I forget the units exactly but yeah it ended up being in the single digits, and about that many groups of people came

Driving by at like 8pm there was zero line yet so right then I figured welp if I camp out from here on I'm guaranteed to get one! Then slowly a few more people game. My sister and dad drove by to visit mid-way and they said the other locations around town were much longer lines

also with Twilight Princess I got some cheap commemorative coin on with a sticker of Link's face on one side and "Zellers" on the back... around the coin it said mine was #1000-some-numbers out of 5000

No, but I regularly buy it on the day the game that sold the system to me launched.

I don't really have any interest in getting a console on Day 1 and never have done, unless it has an exclusive launch game that I really, really want, which has never happened.
