If that cast is anything like this one, there's a chance they already hit that mark.

Survivor is currently looking into filming 41 and 42 in the Dominican Republic if they are still not allowed to film in Fiji by early 2021.

Awesome, Dominican Republic will be very refreshing to see. Let's get some culture back into the seasons and not Fiji again.

Nuclear take #2 incoming.

1. TAR5 - Colin & Christie
2. TAR2 - Oswald & Danny
3. TAR1 - Kevin & Drew
4. TAR3 - Teri & Ian
5. TAR9 - BJ & Tyler
6. TAR7 - Rob & Amber
7. TAR11 - Oswald & Danny
8. TAR6 - Gus & Hera
9. TAR10 - Dustin & Kandice
10. TAR8 - Paolo Family
11. TAR4 - Jon & Al

Before I talk about the rest of the season, I want to touch on the fact that Jeremy has aged absolutely terribly in the span of like...one year. When Phil does the phone gag at the finish line again and gives the phone to Eric, I barely even recognized him. It was probably closer to 2 years, given that was likely filmed closer to the air-date and spliced in, but still.

Anyway, I actually found myself enjoying this season way more than I expected. Maybe it was the fact that I went in with rock-bottom expectations, or the fact that I knew what was coming so I could brace myself, but it really wasn't that bad. I'll discuss the things that WERE bad first, though. Obviously, Kevin & Drew were a huge disappointment. It's tough to see Drew like that, not even caring about being on the race, but the fact that they were put out of their misery early was probably a good thing. Honestly, given that Drew really wasn't in shape for this one, I would have rather they cast Ken & Gerard in this spot. Rob & Amber going out early definitely took the wind out of the sails of the season a lot, but truthfully? I kinda think it was a good thing, because it let the remainder of the season feel a little more relaxed once they were gone. The biggest issue with this season is obviously the route planning. The first few legs were fine, but those Africa legs were a disaster. I don't know why they didn't schedule charters for the teams instead of letting them going blind into a airport with almost no flights to the following destinations. Having to delay the busses in Poland to let the back teams kind of catch up was a sloppy solution, even if it did work. But then you have an intersection when there was a 3/3 split on busses 4 hours apart? What? The post-NEL legs were almost always bad too, they were extremely linear and Joe & Bill and Oswald & Danny basically had zero shot to catch up +30 minutes to avoid elimination, so why even bother? And then the leg Eric & Danielle survived there was another NEL? What would have happened if they came in last again? Nothing? What's the point? And the final task was kind of a joke. Hey, try this thing but if you don't get it in 10 minutes you can leave anyway.

THAT ALL BEING SAID...I still had fun watching most of these teams bumble their way through this busted race. The only two teams I didn't want to see went out early, and I don't think the rest of the crew was as bad as other seem to. Ian was a little more subdued, but he and Teri were still enjoyable to watch. Joe & Bill were similar, less cutthroat than season 1, but it was a nice change of pace. Uchenna & Joyce were basically unchanged (although their elimination leg was unceremonious as all hell). Oswald & Danny and Charla & Mirna were still wonderful, and Dustin & Kandice were still very rootable. Eric & Danielle were weird. It's clear neither of them really wanted to be there with each other, and I read afterwards that they had already actually broken up prior to filming the season, so that makes sense. Eric was less fun when he isn't goofing around with Jeremy, and Danielle just...kinda exists. It is a minor miracle that they managed to win though, given how much rotten luck they had over the course of the season.

I think the main thing that makes me enjoy this season more than the ones below it is that there were a lot of fun little moments that made me chuckle throughout the race. While the overall story is a mess, the scene to scene bits are pretty fun. Charla tumbling over in a suit of armor trying to lead a horse, Kandice and Mirna awkwardly riding bamboo poles trying to flatten out dough for noodles, Oswald & Danny randomly stopping to get fruit on the way to a detour. There were a lot of little moments like that to make me smile, which is more than I can say for the season I have below this, and for me, that's enough to override the obvious issues with the rest of the season.

I hear people like Season 12 a lot, so I'm interested to move on to that one. I know the winners and know the teams that ended up on Season 18, but that's about it.

Yeah, 12-18 are mostly okay. 12, 13, 17 and 18 are actively good. 14 and 15 are okay (the former being overrated as hell but not bad). 16 is the low point of this stretch.

12 was so popular when it aired that it actually saved the franchise from cancellation.

Something that just hit me, I forgot to mention it when we were talking about TAR9.

I don't remember how, but somehow I was accidentally spoiled that Eric & Jeremy won, and nothing through the season even remotely made me doubt that, so imagine my surprise when they lost at literally the last second (and the delight that it was to my favorite team).

Yeah at this point my winner preference is as follows:

DeAngelo & Gary >>>>>>>>>> Eswar & Aparna >>>>> Hung & Chee >>>>>>>>>> Maddison & Riley >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Will & James

I actually do like Hung & Chee more than Eswar & Aparna at this point but the former would make absolutely terrible winners. At least Eswar & Aparna could become come-from-behind bumblefuck winners at this point. DeAngelo & Gary are the only actual good winners left.

Yeah, it was more of a "Why did it have to be them?" so Eswar and Aparna could U-Turn one of the teams behind them.

I think it's fine the way it is. It IS a legit strategy (even if it is a nefarious one), and even without that particular strategy, it would change the game too much to implement a change.

Let's say Team X is in second-to-last and team Y is in last, coming from different detours. Team X gets to the U-Turn board and, not knowing who has left the other side of the detour yet, tries to U-Turn team W, who is already ahead of them. Under Peridiam's rule, production should force X not to U-Turn W, in which case the only team they wouldn't be prevented from U-Turning is Y, screwing them when they weren't even the target. Under burke's rule, either X gets penalized for something they could not have possibly known not to do, or they are scared shitless to U-Turn anyone, reducing the odds of U-Turns even being used. This is magnified in another situation - if X is already U-Turned and there is another one open, they either take the risk of catching up at the other detour and not having any worries next round, or they make it so that even if they do manage to survive this round, they are completely buried in the next round. Everyway they look at it, they lose.

And if you try to make it arbitrary like "they have to know the other team is ahead of them and/or do it for nefarious purposes in order to get the penalty," you're getting into really dangerous waters.

Just leave it alone.

Better than last night's episode...

1. TAR5 - Colin & Christie
2. TAR2 - Oswald & Danny
3. TAR1 - Kevin & Drew
4. TAR3 - Teri & Ian
5. TAR9 - BJ & Tyler
6. TAR12 - Ron & Christina
7. TAR7 - Rob & Amber
8. TAR11 - Oswald & Danny
9. TAR6 - Gus & Hera
10. TAR10 - Dustin & Kandice
11. TAR8 - Paolo Family
12. TAR4 - Jon & Al

9/12/7 all kind of occupy roughly the same space for me right now, so I could see 12 potentially moving up a spot after it sinks in a bit.

I think darkx said this about 9, but 12 was basically what I'd consider a textbook "good" season. I don't think it did anything spectacularly, but there was really nothing outright bad about it. The route was excellent. Even though it was a bit shorter, it helped with variety because aside from Burkina Faso, they were never in a single country for more than an episode. The cast was mostly good, though I never developed a huge attachment to any one team in particular. Ron & Christina were obviously the closest, but almost everyone added something positive, minus Ari & Staella, who were thankfully out first, and Nathan & Jen, who were awful for 10 straight episodes. TK & Rachel are fine winners, perhaps a little boring, but I have no beef with their win, even though I think Ron & Christina would have provided a more satisfying ending. U-Turn is a much better replacement for the Yield (though it does have issues, as were discussed last night) and Speed Bump is...whatever. I don't think they ever really find the right "punishment" for coming in last in a NEL. I know Speed Bump sticks for the rest of the series going forward but it still feels a bit whatever. I'm not even sure a punishment it really needed, even, but so be it.

That's basically it, not much else to say there. I know the winners of season 13, but couldn't even name a single other team because no one came back for Unfinished Business, so this'll be mostly blind.

Once again, I'm on my phone so I don't have my exact list, but Ron & Christina were indeed the best, and Nathan & Jennifer were the worst.

That being said, I don't think my cast ranking in any season changed as dramatically as 12 during my 2019-20 series rewatch. When I first watched it 10 years prior, I had Ron & Christina in last because Ron was just too much for me back then but now I find his intensity very entertaining. Also back then, TK & Rachel were one of my favorite teams ever. Now I found them mostly bland with the occasional good or bad episode. Another team I wildly misremembered was Lorena & Jason. I had remembered them being one of those nightmare borderline-abusive couples, but in actuality Jason was probably one of the more supportive and patient s/o's to a "meltdown" racer that the series has ever had.

i think the big things in 12 were:
they shortened the race course, which made the non-elimination legs much less prevalent and predictable
they FINALLY, after several failed attempts, came up with a practical and good (if unexciting) non-elimination penalty. the speed bump isn't the most essential part of the race, but it actually serves its purpose and doesn't thoroughly screw over a non-elim team like the time penalty did

the cast was pretty good though, i was rooting for nicolas and don, but honestly found myself thoroughly amused at how comically bad nate & jen were at the end (and their elimination was particularly satisfying)
