Yeah Dan ruined everything but you've got Noura, Janet, Elaine, Karishma, Jamal and Kellee as people that I'd love to see back and could actually reasonably see coming back, plus, even though I hate Dean and am not a fan of Lauren either, I wouldn't consider either a wasted returnee spot.

and there's a lot to be critical of about missy but she definitely brought a lot to the table - she'd be polarizing in a much different way were it not for the dan mess, and i STILL don't really blame her for that

Tough as Nails:
Given that they didn't say why Mikey went home or even give him a proper, televised goodbye, combined with his fairly aggressive behavior in the first two episodes, makes me think he likely got ejected for something and they didn't want to outright say that.

No. Last episode ended on a cliffhanger with one person potentially leaving due to an injury. This episode opened the next day with Phil telling everyone that she was not cleared to return to the game, then very cryptically said "In another development, Mikey is also no longer competing on Tough as Nails" and left it at that.

So the replacement is named Kyle Moore, and BBCAN twitter started pushing for him to be kicked off the show and attacking his twitter... except they attacked the wrong Kyle Moore. There's a Kyle Moore who looks like the guy on the show, who's never even seen the show, but now they realized that one is a mental health advocate, has a mental health podcast, uses his new platform to push for changes to health care, etc. He was a good sport about the misunderstanding so now he's a pseudo-celebrity in the BBCAN audience, with the community giving him endless praise, and he's already been playing Among Us with the RHAP crew.

I gotta say, I generally agree with, or at the very least respect, the opinions of Mario Lanza, but his obsession with Dan Foley and insistence that he's one of the greatest characters in Survivor history is just..... gross.

Respect the work Mario does but I'm just not a fan of his writing style. There are many other things I'd rather do than read an essay on why Dan Foley is an awesome character.

Like the first two versions of Funny 115 were amazing to read but it's such a slog to read any entry on the current edition.

I think there are two big reasons for this.

First, with a couple of exceptions, the stretch of Survivor that this list focuses on was notoriously awful.

Second, somewhere during this stretch was when the show's editing began to shift its focus from characters to gameplay, and thus it got a lot less funny, and so he feels more compelled to go into greater detail justifying certain entries, usually involving dropping references that are in fact much funnier than the actual moment.

and i also think he's too blinded by what survivor "used to be"
there's a ton of valid criticisms of modern survivor, but i think there's plenty of ways the show has evolved that are for the better. hot take or not, we really don't need shit like thailand anymore.

Yeesh, Tough as Nails has been a trainwreck. two medivacs and an ejection, plus my favorite is already out of the individual competition.

Anyway my prediction going forward...

Knuckles and Iraida will be the next two out (before tonight I would have said Freight Train with them as next three out anyway). Of the five left, I don't see Sarah winning or even making the final three. Between the four remaining I could see any winning but in order of likelihood, Scott > Zeus > Merryl > Swifty.

I'm genuinely surprised. Not only did I totally think this was Iraida's boot episode, given past trends on the show, but the fact that Merryl got booted came almost completely out of nowhere. Even during the individual competition, it just seemed so random.

Additional thoughs:

I'm also surprised Merryl is gone because I thought she was going to make the finale and maybe even win. I'm also realizing that if she hadn't told Swifty that he was putting oranges in Iraida's boxes, there's a good chance she would have gone into overtime with him or avoided it altogether, and if she had faced him she probably would have won due to his foot injury. She kinda got screwed for being honest.

But at this point I'd be stunned if Scott didn't win. He's getting the Type A Generic McWhitedude edit with juuuust enough personality and flaws to make us believe he's a real person and not a manifestation of CBS's wet dream.

Yeah, Scott worries me because he's far and away my least favorite character left. But none of the others have a decent edit. Iraida and Swifty are completely irrelevant until they're necessary to the story. Zeus only started getting a story the past few episodes because SOMEONE has to be a threat to Scott's win. Knuckles is too wishy-washy and set up to fail. And Sarah doesn't even have a story.

Yeah, I was about halfway through 19 and I got stalled a little. Nothing to do with the season in particular, my schedule just changed a bit and havent had time to fit it in. Ill get back to it, but Ill probably need to restart 19 over.

Tough As Nails watched. Not surprised to see Knuckles and Iraida in the bottom two, since the former has been a long time coming, and the latter just doesn't stack up to the other four. Definitely surprised to see Iraida knocking off another bigger character though, and starting to develop a story in the process.

Early in the episode I thought it would be Sarah's boot episode because of her suddenly getting personal focus. Definitely surprising to see Iraida take out two big female characters back to back. I was surprised to see/hear about what Scott was like as a child. Definitely makes me dislike him less, but also leaves me with absolutely zero doubt he wins now. Also, last season the penultimate episode was just the team tiebreaker. Very surprised they are going to do the F5 individual comp next week too.

A little thing I was thinking about today... the most forced-positive edits in Survivor history. In other words, people who were shoved down the audience's throat as being likable or rootable, despite plenty of indication that they were actually playing a villainous game or were a mean or confrontational person.

Without thinking about it too too hard, this is what I came up with as a top 10:

I didn't realize how much Iraida was propping up the show for me these last few episodes (after Patrick's medevac). This episode just sucked the enjoyment I have for this season completely away. Not only did Dirty Hands (EASILY the team I preferred) get utterly destroyed in the tiebreaker team competition, but then my favorite player left (and the heart and soul of the show) gets eliminated in the overtime competition. It just sucks, because I look at the final four, and you have Zeus/Sarah, who are just overcompetitive workbots, Swifty, who is just a little too cocky for someone who's performed as mediocre-ly as he has, and Scott, who just sucks and is such an obnoxious overdog at this point that I once again have to fear that he's going to win the whole thing.

It also doesn't help that, aside from the first few rounds, the season's eliminations have been pretty predictable. Tara and Angel's eliminations were the only real shockers, but then the overdue Celi boot, Patrick's medevac, the slightly surprising but ultimately expected Merryl boot, and then the overdue Knuckles and Iraida boots...it's just eh. I remember last season, even though it was male-dominated (and my GOD Young sucked to beat out multiple more interesting female players), you still had Michelle, the ultimate underdog, taking out Lee and Luis. This season, the only men eliminated have been either due to ejection, medevac, or being paired up with another man in an arbitrary duo competition.

Tough As Nails finale:

God that's disappointing. The most arrogant cast member is never in danger at any point in the season and wins the final challenge after taking the lead in stage two of seven and never relinquishing it. Scott SUUUUUUCKS. And I know people don't like when I go into SJW mode, but it's annoying that in two seasons of the show, they've cast only five white men out of twenty-four casting slots, and none of them have been eliminated by conventional means. Two winners, one runner-up, one medevac, one ejection. And ultimately, this season started stronger and ended MUCH weaker than season 1.

Freight Train > Iraida > Angel > Celi > Knuckles > Merryl > Zeus > Sarah > Tara > Swifty > Mikey > Scott

Hmm, I'm not sure what my exact ranking would be yet, I might need to let it settle a bit more, but for sure we have the same split between who's top half and bottom half.

Just to play devil's advocate a bit on this point, if Freight Train hadn't been medivac'd, I think it's a fairly safe bet that he would have been conventionally eliminated in the same episode anyway.

Anyway, even though it was a disappointing final three, I can at least say that they were the three most consistently strong people in the individual competition. The team competition is another story. Zeus and especially Scott definitely get "doesn't play well with others" on their team comp report card and both cost their respective teams several wins.

Yeah, obviously I'm not saying that Mikey/Patrick would've been in the finals if not for their respective unorthodox eliminations, but it's just weird how it worked out the way it did.

somehow watching the latest rhap survivor season ranking (gabon) unearthed some unexpectedly fond memories of the season. i have to say, gabon is pretty damn great and perpetually underrated
