I have no idea how you are going to stop this
Every other country showed a major decline at some point
The US did not
The rate of infection seems relatively okay for hospital beds here. We never had cases like Belgium or france or spain did per population in spikes.

we've had a decline before, twice now really.
thing is there's just no way it doesn't go back up. and there's some countries you just know the data is just garbage - China, India, Iran, and Brazil are all known examples.

as it stands we're pretty much in the situation that was planned for at the start: don't overwhelm the hospitals and medical system, make sure the supplies are increased, and make sure emergency situations can be dealt with. at the time people were saying that it'd just be spreading out the virus but well... yeah, that was one of the major intentions as a worst case scenario if no better option appears (see: it doesn't mutate its own death). as long as we can improve treatment then we're pretty much doing all that can be practically done.

There are some good reasons to think it might. In particular, we know that the virus spreads much more efficiently indoors than it does outdoors, and the colder it is the more people will tend to be inside (and close windows, so there will be less ventilation). In fact, one of the theories I've seen for why the second wave this summer was concentrated in the south was that that's where it was hot enough to force people back inside.

The virus spreads optimally at a certain temperature. That has been proven already. That's why they surmised it would "go away" in the summer.

The seasonality is kind of a thing, but it's really much more of a factor of exponential growth being what it is where it rolls along barely detectable for months and then suddenly it's absolutely exploding out of control. Leaving that reproduction value above 1 tends to do that. A reproduction cycle is seen as being about 5 days, so if you expand that to 5 months, we're at just about the 30th cycle since a lot of countries lifted lockdowns and other restrictions.

Like if you're offered a penny one day, and every successive day you're offered double the previous amount across 30 days, you're going to barely make anything for 15 days, still a modest sum for the next 5, and then by day 27 you're making a million daily.

I'm kind of curious as to how Japan is doing so (relatively) well. They had a lockdown in the spring like most everywhere else, but it doesn't seem to have been any more strict or to have lasted longer than other countries. Their government response has, by all accounts, been fairly lackadaisical and haphazard at times, and their testing rate/capacity is far lower than it should be, yet they have one of the lowest fatality rates amongst industrialized nations. Being an island nation helps, I'm sure, and for all I know they're a week or two from things blowing up, but it's an interesting case.

It really does show the importance of mask wearing, which is the one thing they share in common with the other East Asian countries that have done a great job of handling the virus. I guess I answered my own question, but an important reminder of how important mask wearing is.

One thing I've seen mentioned with respect to Japan is that people typically don't talk in public there (e.g. the trains are typically silent). We know that people spread considerably more virus when talking (and even more when shouting/singing), but I don't think it's something of which people are very conscious.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually just a third variable effect (e.g. people who are more responsible are both more likely to get a flu shot and take better covid precautions), but another potential reason to get a flu shot that everyone should be getting anyway...!

We never had a lockdown, just the government saying "uh stay home if you can plz". Now they are heavily promoting domestic travel. Masks and social distancing are natural things here, but the whole staying home thing hasn't really been happening as far as I can tell

The response was also pretty quick, as there were only a few cases when they implemented travel restrictions and quarantines for arrivals. Until like this month non-citizen residents who were overseas weren't even allowed back in

Ditto. Even before this I was only going to the office 2 days a week but it's so damn nice to have a 0 minute commute. I expect they're going to push having us come in at least 1 day a week so they can "see our face" but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

If we were permanent work from home, I don't see why we'd all have to continue to live in such a high cost area (though I do really like where I live). Why not move someplace cheaper and then, if necessary, fly in for a day or two if something NEEDS to be done "in person".
