Or did you have to wait several years to finally experience it?

For me, there's been a lot, but as far as must-plays go, I'd say Castlevania: Symphony of the Night takes the cake since I've been wanting to play it for 13 years now, but an original PS1 copy is just too expensive.

Planet Harriers. The original Space Harrier was my absolute favorite game growing up and I was incredibly hyped for the idea of a new game... but none of the arcades I've been to had the machine and the game was never ported to any home system, so I've been out of luck.

I had waited several years to play a lot of the more obscure parts of the PS2 survival horror library, due to their high value and being unable to emulate PS2 at the time. This hasn't really been a problem for any game in a long time now though.

Mother 3, Gyakuten Kenji 2, Chibi-Robo and Eternal Darkness are all currently on that list

There's quite a few that took me awhile to play though. Here's some of the interesting ones

Final Fantasy VII - Wanted to play this since I got hooked on Kingdom Hearts back in like 2007, I didn't really have a PS1 and that was back when my parents didn't trust putting their credit cards on game consoles so no PS3 version either. I actually remember going to Blockbuster and renting Dirge of Cerberus thinking it was FF7, you can imagine my disappointment when I got home! Thankfully in 2014 I got a job and it was one of my first purchases. I binged it in like a week.

EarthBound - I was a huge fan of Ness thanks to Smash Bros. and had desperately wanted to play his game since like the early 2000's. If I was having issues getting FF7, then there was no way I was playing this one. I was definitely following the rumors of its eventual VC release, when I finally did get it in 2013, I actually kinda hated it and didn't get around to beating it until last year. Hoping that 10 years from now if we see Mother 3 I'll like it more!

Conker's Bad Fur Day - This one's fun. So I loved playing Diddy Kong Racing as a kid and one day I was reading a gaming magazine. It had some pages devoted to CBFD and I recognized Conker and begged my Dad to buy it for me when it came out. He read the rating on it and said hell no, you're not old enough. I even went as far as to suggest buying it and keeping it locked up until I was old enough to play it, he didn't budge. I'm actually pretty proud of my business sense back then, because I think the game is worth at least 100 bucks now. Eventually I did get to play it in high school because a friend let me borrow it. It's a great game that I still go back to every now and again thanks to Rare Replay, I'd still like to find a physical copy at some point

I never owned a PS1 but my brother did. Sometimes he would bring it down when he visits orr I would play it when I would visit him

I owned FFVII and he owned Tactics, so I used to not be able to play them when I wanted to. Which sucked because they are legit my fav games, even to this day. That sorta counts I think. I eventually got a PS2 in 02 though, some years later. I somehow adopted my bro's copy of FFT and I still have both to this day, even the PS2

I always wanted to try Buck Bumble, They used to advertise it alot in WCW and I saw it in magazines all of the time, but I don't know why I never did. I don't think the rental store had it. I know I finally can on an emulator if I really wanted to

I got my hands on Suikoden 1 back in the day and it SUCKED when I found out part 2 was a grail. Second time mentioning this in a week but thats why I tried buying Icon's copy off of him. I tried to for like a decade. One day he unceremoniously mentioned he randomly sold it off on ebay. After our history it didn't cross his mind to give me first pickings :(.

thanks to PSN I can now, I own it there. I just haven't gotten around to Replaying Suikoden 1

There's a few Dreamcast games that I thought looked pretty cool, but I never owned a Dreamcast or had an opportunity to play them. I couldn't name the games now but if I really wanted to look up a list and some screenshots I could figure out what they were.

Were the games actually good and are they playable now? Who knows. I'm usually occupied enough doing other things that it's never seriously crossed my mind to look into the Dreamcast library.

ah thats a good one, a dreamcast. I always wanted one but obviously my parents couldn't do that. by the time I could get a job, the PS2 was the hotness and I went for that.

The Dreamcast was the fighter's dream, man. Nearly arcade perfect fighters.

AH thats another one! Marvel Vs Capcom blew my MIND back then. Even with my limited access to a PS1, MvC1 sucked on there. And there was no machine of that game in my home town. Hell, I remember saving 50 bucks and JUST wanting to buy MvC1 on dreamcast just to look at it lol. I figure maybe it would motivate me to save up for the whole system. I had to settle for MvC2 on PS2 down the line. MvC1 still holds a dear place in my heart

Soul Calibur 2 on GCN was one, I didn't have one, just PS2. God fucking Heihachi. I did get a GCN further down the line and SC2 was on of my first purchases on it

Seconding the others saying SotN is pretty accessible these days, it's on PS4/Xbox One BC/Mobile.

I missed out on Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door at the time and Gamecube games are way too expensive these days so never got around to that one. Chrono Trigger was one I wanted to play throughout my childhood and finally got it when the DS version came to Europe, and it absolutely lived up to my expectations!

Goldeneye on N64 and Final Fantasy Tactics

I do own SOTN on PSN, but I keep getting stuck at this one broken bridge you have to cross early in the game (though I do now know that you have to buy an ability from the merchant to pass it). Also the PAL version runs more slowly which is dumb.

Oh, hey!

We have a cinema brand called Cinpolis, and there's a huge and famous mall where I live in which they have arcade machines. Anyway, I remember back in 2014, there always was this F-Zero AX cabinet always turned on but it was also always not accessible, so I was like "fhkkejzkialksd!!!" at the time because I thought: Why would they have a cabinet always on if we can never play it?! And I used to play a ton of F-Zero X at the time, so I was always hoping that whenever I visited the cinema I could get my hands on the universally praised GX/AX.

They ultimately removed it, but they kept a lot of other arcade machines, like a Daytona USA one among other ones.

That's bizarre (and a cruel blue-ball)! I have no idea why they'd do that. Even if the steering wheel was a lemon or something, it'd just make sense to turn the cabinet off entirely.

Daytona USA is the gold standard for racing games though, IMO, so at least they had the decency to keep that one going.

Some folks compiled a map of remaining F-Zero AX locations. Apparently a place in Indianapolis has a Japanese cabinet that's still operating. Indy isn't exactly my backyard, but it's certainly in weekend-trip territory and I'm going to seek AX out next time I'm there.
