Personally I can't help but judge those that don't as selfish assholes. (not directed at you, to be clear) The ones that really get to me are the ones that have a mask but are just holding in their hand or have it hanging off their ear. Like why do you even bother bringing it then?

And then there's couples or groups of people who come in yet only 1 of them is wearing a mask. Weird.

Because the point of masks is for everyone to be wearing them. If people are not, the masks are relarively useless. It only really works if everyone is bought in.

The point of the mask is to keep it from spreading. If you unknowingly have the virus and are not wearing a mask, there's a higher chance you're getting others sick. So the percentage doesn't matter.

Why did you ask me a question if you just wanted to argue the answer?

I live in an area where Wendy Bell is like a Messiah. Where masks are the exception. Not the norm. Where they post signs not to come in without a mask at restaurants and bars and every single patron is maskless.

If I got the virus, it is because someone else who didn't have a mask gave it to me by not wearing it themselves. Thus, they have given it to those around me as well. I see little reason to worry about protecting others from infection who have no worries about spreading it to me or getting it themselves. When people were wearing them, I wore them everywhere (not that I really even go anywhere anyways). I was one of the only ones at my place of work who wore them. Once we went green. Relatively everyone shed them at once and our workplace even placed guidance telling us it was allowable to shed them. I only probably say 80% don't wear them because I am biased some towards closer to the yellow phase as again I don't go out much in public. It very well could be even higher by this point. I only know of a couple of people who wear them.

Of the couple who whine about wearing masks and following guidelines on my Facebook are themselves hypocrites anyways who broke lockdowns when it was convenient for them. Posted pictures getting fucked up at parties maskless while now crying to wear them now. The girl crying on Facebook to shutdown our T-ball and baseball leagues was none other than a girl who was "over the virus and gonna live her life" when it was her birthday "week" and was partying it up nonstop.

If everyone wears masks again then in the rare time I go out, I will wear them again.

The only time I have worn a mask outside has been when I went to the DMV a few days ago. The other 3 times this month I was in public I chose not to. At 5 Guys where absolutely 0 wore masks and people even sat in cordoned off tables, Walmart once, and at a bar I went to where not a single person had a mask on.

If it becomes a law, I will abide by it. While it remains a guideline that no one follows, I am not concerned about it.

As far as I am concerned, the virus is not containable without unrealistic responses (lockdowns) until a vaccine happens. Our goal is mitigation, not eradication, for that is unattainable. I live in an area with relatively no cases, in an area where no one cares about the guidelines.

In my town the people who wear masks is basically reduced to people in the medical field, store employees and elderly people. Its rare I see anyone with one otherwise. My town is pretty small though (like 9k people) with barely any cases so I guess everyone feels pretty safe or the whole thing has gone on for so long people just no longer care and if they get it they get it. The stores say its required via signs outside, but dont enforce it probably because somebody was literally murdered for doing so in my state....

Any restaurant that tried to enforce it in my area basically has irate people mother fuck them and go elsewhere and they end up relaxing their enforcement before long, from what I have gathered from people from work.

The only place I know enforcing it is a local pizza shop. When I picked up a pizza there they said I had to have a mask. I asked for curbside. They said no and just requested I lift my shirt over my face like a mask and come in. I did because it seemed reasonable if they were enforcing it for everyone.

Deaths are a lag stat.

Hospitilizations precede a rise in deaths.

Hospitalizations being up is why everyone is concerned right now. Showing the case number is just a more effective way of illustrating the problem to the public because its larger.

The other number to look at, which this is also ignoring, is positive % of tests. This is the number of people that have reason to think they have it that actually do. This is also rising.

What happens is positive % rises, this is followed by hospitalization # rising on a lag, which is then followed by deaths rising on a larger lag.

Looking at cases vs deaths is almost entirely pointless, which is all that dumb twitter thread seems to focus on.

Increased testing does not fully explain the increase in cases. If it did, the fraction of tests coming back positive would be decreasing rather than increasing.

This guy also doesn't seem to understand that deaths lag positive tests, which in turn lag the actual date of the infection.

yeah everyone here wears masks for the most part. At least in stores and stuff. I have to for work and public transportation. You get dirty looks around here when you dont wear one which has led to my dad getting into a large number of arguments.

Speaking of which Im pretty positive the horrible coughing sickness he had all of January into February had to have been covid based off of how hes been acting. Either that or hes the luckiest person on the planet

likelihood is still that wasn't covid. Keep in mind the actual percentage of the population that has ever had COVID is still very small, even if you take the maximum "we may have 10x as many cases as reported" number. So even taking no precautions there is a chance you have never run into proximity with someone infectious, and even if you had, theres still no guarantee of transmission. Disease spread is very much an "us" problem, where it may not directly impact you, but if everyone acts like that, enough chances happen that it will spread eventually, even if not to you specifically.

See Id think that but Im in Boston. I personally know a large number of people whove been infected and gotten over it (and fortunately no deaths). My dad went into the actual hardest hit town in Boston and ate inside a restaurant during lockdown because the owner didnt give a shit. They said its something like 1 in 10 people were infected in Boston in May. So I dunno!!

People are more likely to wear masks if they see other people wearing masks. By wearing one yourself, you add a little bit to the social pressure to wear a mask. To get from nobody wearing them to everybody wear them, some people are going to have to be the first.

Yep. I'm just happy my area of the country (NoVA) is still being pretty damn good about mask wearing. At least in indoor environments.

i'm really fucking pissed that it's literally halfway through the year and there is still so much RESISTANCE to wearing a fucking mask of all things and that there's seemingly like no progress on this situation.

what really gets me is people who are like "but it doesn't work, mortality rate very low, etc." idk but i feel like if there was even like a 1% chance that i could potentially prevent somebody from FUCKING DYING by wearing one, that should be reason enough.

Well at least this is gonna make people believe more in vaccinations and herd immunity, right?

Personally speaking, I'm worried about the potential side effects of any vaccination that is getting railroaded though this warp speed process. I simply don't trust the current administration, which just wants a solution ASAP so they can try to claim it before the election. I understand that's a somewhat irrational opinion but, well, see hydroxychloroquine.

I'm very pro-vaccine and I have the same concerns. If only we had evidence that this administration wasn't explicitly anti-science... it's not like there's numerous public examples of them changing scientific results in order to appease dear leader, right?

I dont think thats totally irrational. The reason vaccines are so safe is that they are extensively tested for safety and efficacy. There are some corners you can cut (you can start manufacturing vaccine ahead of time, for example, if youre willing to run the risk of having to throw it away), but you cant skip the clinical trials. I would hope that there would be whistleblowers if Trump applied pressure to skip things like that, but I suppose we cant know that for sure.

In general it seems. I didn't mean to say the majority is against it. I am just saying people are. Not the majority are. I asked the one guy why he wouldn't get one cuz it seems dumb not to. At worst case to them, it is getting a vaccine against a virus that is not really a big deal. In best case it saves their life.

The one dude told me he isn't getting it because it is just another way for the government to control you.

Also have others that are reposting a message saying they won't get a vaccination either if available. Not sure they gave a reason.

Been wearing a mask while out running the last few days just to help reduce the stigma a bit. Though I do have to take it considerably slower to generate less heat I figure I'd try it for a bit just to increase awareness a little bit.

My cousin in Arizona is positive. She is 5 months pregnant.

A restaurant literally around the corner from the one I work at just had two employees test positive, won't be surprised if it's even more than that after tests for all the rest come back. I know their setup, the way our place works people are way more at risk than there. It's only a matter of time now.
