Those low estimates for household spread are a pretty pleasant surprise. It seems that making an effort to avoid infecting housemates if you get it is very worthwhile since transmission is well below 100%.

So life has gone back to normal for the most part on the small island that I've been visiting/temporarily staying on since February. We only ever got to about 200 total cases at our peak, (total population is around 150 000), but the local government did a great job with quarantine and even closing in certain parts of the island.

We are now down to zero cases total for the last few weeks and most restrictions have been lifted. Masks are mandatory indoors in public places and establishments, and bars/restaurants must stay under half capacity.

It's funny because we have more precautions with zero cases now than the US has with record high cases, which also explains why we're back to normal and the US is a shitshow.

For anyone wondering, it's the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. A group of islands just off the coast of Portugal that belong to Portugal. The mainland has been hit pretty hard, but we were okay.

Deaths by Coronavirus projected to hit 175k by October in USA.

Disneyland and world opening dates of July 17th are postponed indefinitely it seems.

Buddy Hield and Jabari Parker test positive for the kings. As well as Djokovic in Tennis.

Ezekiel Elliot reports overcoming the virus and being back to normal now.

Also the daily new cases in America broke the single day increase set in April earlier this year.

"people who have been infected make so-called memory B cells, which can rapidly ramp up antibody production when needed.

If they find the virus again, they remember and start to make antibodies very, very quickly, said Florian Krammer, a virologist...who has led several studies of antibodies to the coronavirus."

Yeah, the memory B cell (as well as memory T cells) are one of the most interesting aspects in this. They leave open the possibility that seropositivity studies for antibodies aren't revealing the true number of infected people. So you could have individuals for whom antibodies fade quickly, but immunity could still be conferred by these lymphocytes.

Unfortunately it's still in the realm of speculation, but it's one of the things I've personally believed as an explanation for instances where one infected housemate doesn't spread it to others despite repeated exposure.

Parts of the US are very much making those same mistakes!

The mask thing frustrates me so much because it's so fucking easy and a very minor sacrifice compared to the alternatives like losing your job or dying (or getting someone else killed).

Cases do appear to be going up in CA (which is very concerning), but this is a dumb comparison to make given the very strong day-of-week effects in reporting (i.e. weekend/monday numbers are always way lower because they process fewer tests).

If it makes you feel better, they are this dumb with headlines everywhere. Pittsburgh every weekend reports declining deaths for 2 consecutive days lol.

I have a technocratic question that I've been wondering about as things reopen.

When locations such as a museum open at 25% capacity, what exactly is meant by capacity? Do they mean the literal capacity of the building, or is capacity considered the point at which the museum would normally stop new guests from entering to prevent crowds. Because the latter is done well before the literal 100% capacity number.

There's no way the Florida numbers are anywhere close to accurate given how impossible it is to get tested. It's going to be significantly higher. Other than my own experience, heard from plenty of people who have tried to get tested multiple times only to be turned away after multiple hours of queueing.

Also today was the first day I would say I felt symptom free. Well kinda. I had a bit of a blocked nose / mucusy throat but that's it. I can force a little bit of chest pain by breathing deep and hard which I assume is just it still being inflammed. Today is the 11th day after my initial symptoms showed up.

It's always been expected that the numbers are significantly lower than the confirmed cases. Most say 10-30x more. Which is good. It means mortality is a lot lower than expected and social distancing naturally happens due to already infecteds.

The states that are "spiking" are testing everyone who comes to a hospital, and counting it as a positive case even if its just antibodies or is totally asymptomatic. Nearly all of the "spike" is people who are going to be perfectly fine such that they would have never even noticed they had it were it not for the government freaking out about this.

Being asymptomatic doesn't mean you can't pass it along to someone else who WOULDN'T be perfectly fine. Those people need to know that they should stay away from others.

I know you had to postpone (not cancel) your wedding and you can't go to bars because of this, but some things are more important than you.
