I have a buddy who works at Home Depot and one of his co-workers got COVID-19. They have to shut the store down for 2 weeks, but apparently they gave the workers 2 weeks bonus vacation time to use in case this happened. He told me a bunch of them used it at the start of the pandemic in a panic and now they don't have the vacation time to afford working there.

Maybe just give them all paid time off, Home Depot. It's not like you've been hurting that much through this thing.
This happened at Lowes. They offered us 4 weeks paid time off if you or your immediate family was considered at risk. Which sucked because I opted not to take it and instead a department of 9 only had me and one other guy.

Now if you don't have those 4 weeks, you can still take time off but its unpaid.

I've had some muscle aching and general fatigue for the past two days, plus the nasal congestion and coughing that I had previously written off as just allergies got worse, so I decided to call work and tell them I'm going to get tested and self-quarantine until then. Testing appointments are full at every place in town until the 15th (some places were full until the 29th!!!) so no work until then. If my test comes back positive, I get 14 days sick pay, but for now my time off is unpaid. The extra 600 each week from unemployment for April and May means I'm not in any financial trouble from it, fortunately.

Speaking of going stir crazy I was disappointed to learn mini golf is still closed in California.

Sanitize the clubs and balls, everyone wears a mask and stays with their own party, seems pretty fucking safe.

Especially considering we attempted to open movie theaters and indoor dining already.

Just seems like a big oversight.

I just don't think it's factually accurate to say we're all fucked for something that the vast majority of people are either going to fully recover from or not even realize they had it in the first place.

I've personally had it and it was shitty. I also think the number of reported cases is way lower than whatever is out there because getting tested in most places is miserable which again I know first hand from how many attempts and how much time I had to waste trying to get a test. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if the number of cases is 10x higher than what is reported.

I don't want people to get it and I follow all the correct guidelines but I also think that statements like 'We're all fucked' just isn't the reality. There is an extreme minority of people who it is going to be incredibly bad for and there is the going to be the extreme majority where it will have little to no effect.

I would imagine that people who are asymptomatic probably won't have lasting issues. Everyone else who gets symptoms, if there is lasting effects then it will probably vary on how severe they got it and their other conditions.

Someone like me who has had five pneumothoraxes and had pleurodesis performed on both lungs is probably at a significantly higher risk of having long term health issues from having it.

Studies have already been proving this is likely not the case, since they've found inflammation in the lungs similar to pneumonia in people that have had no symptoms, so they're looking into what that could mean longer term. And they've already seen lasting effects in people deemed "mildly symptomatic."

Iirc some studies have found lung damage in a significant fraction asymptomatic patients. Maybe itll just be temporary, but our risk analysis has to consider the fact that even if only 1%ish of cases lead to deaths, we cant rule out a possibly significantly larger fraction having some sort of long term health effects.

I've been keeping an eye out for studies on long-term effects and so far the only one I've seen was one out of Hong Kong from back in May on a 10 week follow up of patients with radiologically confirmed lung damage. It indicated profound recovery in lung CT scans both of released hospitalized patients and those who were asymptomatic. I don't believe any patients in the study were ones who were placed on a ventilator at any point.

But yeah, the presence of damage in asymptomatic patients is still a big concern. There have also been reports of potential for brain effects on asymptomatic patients. One of the main things to remember is that asymptomatic does not mean that there are no signs. I would be willing to bet that if people regularly had their blood oxygen saturation checked that these people would largely get flagged by mild decreases in SpO2 to the low 90s.

The Ventilators are a cause of major long term damage. If you can help it, you should avoid them. Some doctors even question if they are the proper response to the virus even due to the damage they can cause.

This is the thing that surprised me. When I had it my SpO2 level never dropped below 97% and I was taking readings every hour. It was practically always at 99% with maybe 1-2 reading a day giving 97 or 98.

I actually get more 97-98 readings now than when I had it.

I think we will get back to some normalcy by the later months in the year. However, I don't necessarily think they will wait until the numbers are under control to do it.

With how the US has handled it, it may have actually been better to say fuck it and go the Sweden herd immunity route. The way it has been handled has basically done that anyway just with a delay to it.

That's pretty good to hear, most likely. What I'm most curious about now is if asymptomatic and symptomatic people who never have decreases in SpO2 correlate with not developing the opacities in lung CT scans

Wait, you had it?

How did things go?

I gave a kind of running diary in this topic (probably a previous topic) when I had it but it can be summised up as like 2-3 days for really shitty symptoms and then like 7-10 days of just annoyance.

Day 1 - Symptoms were just mild Muscle/Joint ache (Deduced after this was likely the virus)
Day 2 - Sore Throat, Dry Cough, Muscle/Joint Ache, Headache, Tiredness
Day 3 - All the above plus Fever/Chills, some difficulty breathing,
Day 4 - All the above but starting to reduce in severity with chest pain now thrown into the mix
Day 5 - Most of the above subsided or was minor. Basically just mild congestion and felt like my ribs were bruised
Day 6 to like 12 - Just on/off minor irritations like congestion, infrequent cough, mild chest pain that reduced in persistance

After Day 12 I just had on and off chest pains which disappeared after the 18-19 day mark. Today would be I think 25 or 26 days after symptoms first showed up. I actually still have a bit of a flemmy throat and that hasn't gone away since the beginning.

One thing I cannot stress enough is that the muscle/joint pains I had late Day 2 and early Day 3 are the worst muscle/joint pains I have ever had in my life and nothing comes close to it. I don't typically take medicine unless absolutely necessary but I was chugging painkillers for that.

But on the whole it just like 2-3 days of feeling really bad and then like a week plus of feeling run down / being inconvenienced. The worst part for me was having to keep away from my elderly cat (who is ridiculously attached to me) because I was terrified of her catching it. I slept on a camping bed out of the way for 2 weeks before moving back to the bedroom with her and the missus.

Like where? Most of the places I went pre-pandemic are either still off limits or weren't affected in the first place. I guess it would make it more feasible to go to the bar but my friends haven't had it so the risk would be on them rather than me. Easier just to have them at my house at that point.

I'll probably infrequently meet friends either at my house or theirs I guess but at this point of the pandemic, I would have likely done that regardless of getting it. No large gatherings or anything. I also work with all but one of the friends I would meet and am in rooms with them on a daily basis once I return to work on the 27th. So I'm not sure meeting them at a house is any higher risk than being with them at work.

I rarely did any of those before the pandemic.

My typical leisure activities were going to sports events (I have season tickets), going to bars (or friends houses / having them over), going to the cinema and theater, going to parks for walks or to play tennis/etc and going to restaraunts.

Sports events - Not allowed
Cinema - Not allowed
Theater - Not allowed
Restaraunts - Most of the ones we went to are still takeout only
Bars - Nobody to really go with and I'll likely avoid for a while at least (I maily went to watch sports with a friend)
Parks / Sports - No cost and could still do these during the pandemic anyway (well Tennis was shut off until late May)
Friends houses / My house - I guess buying beer and food kinda helps the economy when I do this
