I have a question for those of you doing rankings...

Are you ranking the games' stories or the actual games as a whole?

Stories. There's probably only 1-2 games on my list that I would put on a top 10 games ever list.

But considering how much the board loves story based JRPGs and story based games in general, there's going to be a lot of overlap on the final list (FFX, FFVII, MGS3, AA3, etc).

Also, seeing To the Moon up there makes me think it would've been a good competitor in GotD2, not the "Turbofodder" people were leading me to believe.

"Widely regarded as best game of all time" is probably a hyperbole, but any PC gaming site would usually have Deus Ex near the very, very top.

It was certainly a level of hyperbole

Deus Ex is def one of the greatest stories ever. The game is insanely well written

Majora's Mask, Ghost Trick and Witcher 3 are all among my favourite games, all in three different tiers and all games I'd put on my own personal games list above everything in tier 1 except Gone Home.

For my own list I weighted games heavily on whether the main plotline was thematically consistent with the aesthetics and writing that games tend to do well (worldbuilding and characters), used the medium to tell a story in a way only games can, or both.

A lot of my favorite games are my favorite games because of their stories/writing, but I definitely didn't just copy/paste my Top 10 and vote for that. For example, I really enjoy Skies of Arcadia's story and the game is an all-time favorite but I wouldn't put it on this list.

I'll say that I did rank them based on their story, but better games overall have a better chance of me remembering them.

It's completely situational, but story in general is one of the most important things to me so it does have a lot of mirroring with my top 10, though not all of it or in the same order.

Deadly P is a bad game that I love because of the story, and it's why it made my list for this. I think people who insist "it's really not that bad a game" are actually doing it a disservice, it's fucking awful. The fact that it has such a unironic loving and widespread following even though it sucks so much is WHY that game is so impressive.

Gotta be honest, I expected better from all those games, especially FF6 which I thought would make the Top 10. Metal Gear Solid wasn't even eligible for the final list until the last 1/4 or so of the voting process.

People are much more likely to want to vote in their darlings, so mainstream stuff like this is always gonna suffer for it.

Deadly Premonition's shooting sections are poor but I actually liked driving around the world and doing sidequests (although driving has its own special brand of jank). The gameplay isn't ALL bad.

Was hoping for better from FFIX but I guess I love the game more than most. Was my favorite game for many years, basically until I played the Trails series. Kuja an all-time great villain, Vivi an all-time great character, and I love the parallels the game sets up between them and also Zidane. The Zidane/Dagger relationship is also great.

To me, characters are pretty much inseparable from story. If I can't engage with the characters I can't engage with the story.

But other things like atmosphere I intentionally didn't count. (e.g. I adore Transistor's atmosphere/aesthetic/world but I thought the actual plot was kinda weak, so I never seriously considered it for my list)
