In retrospect, 999's placement should have been 17 (tie).

The strength of Chrono Trigger's story comes from its pacing. It's not a particularly complex narrative, but whereas most JRPGs go for 60+ of story, Chrono Trigger can be completed in 20 hours and does a fantastic job at continuously leading the player from Plot Point A to Plot Point B to Plot Point C. Combine that with endearing character archetypes, classic artwork, and even some branching endings depending on player choices (a pretty big deal for a 90s game!), and you have an experience that still resonates with people decades later.

Danganronpa is tamer than the Zero Escape characters in the design department. It's just that you can accidentally stumble on scenes that are cringey. Well, in the case of DRV3, there's one mandatory scene like that, but you can just skip the text when it comes up because it's not pertinent to the story whatsoever.

I'm that case I may have to retract my stance that you may want to shy away from DR, since that type of content is pretty exclusively in a handful of quick, specific scenes, and not just the natural state of the characters.

Three people voted for Umineko as a whole. The other three specified the Question Arc.

Umineko is without a doubt the most batshit crazy murder mystery story in existence. It repeatedly deconstructs and reconstructs the genre, weaving the base concepts of a murder mystery into an ever-evolving narrative. The player is as much an actor in the story as any character, as half the game encourages the player to find the truth while the other half simultaneously tries to coerce the player into giving up. Umineko also works very well as a character drama, containing an extensively well-developed cast and a story goes places you won't expect, but it's this meta-but-not-meta narrative that truly sets the story apart.

The second half of Umineko has a much more mixed reception than the first half, but even the people that didn't like it as much will swear by the first half, a.k.a. The Question Arc. There's a reason that Umineko overtook Board 8 for a time. You really had to be there for that zeitgeist experience.

Best version of Umineko doesn't have an official US release unfortunately (or an official release period, really), but it's pretty easy to find. I bought Umineko on Steam just to own it, but have never actually booted that version up because lol Pachinko sprites.

You did not get far enough to see it, but this is pretty funny to read considering the statements in the Umineko narrative later on about how nobody has the right or authority to say what makes good storytelling and mystery <_<

I beat it in 3 weeks and people thought I was crazy. I just...played. I see people taking days to get through and hour of game content because they're keeping a literal notebook, that ain't me fam. Just enjoy the narrative and characters.

I'm the kind of guy who finished Umineko literally in tears (though I cried much harder earlier in that final chapter), and then started browsing the Ao3 page for fics that same night.

Umineko is like 120 hours long though, so Fata Morgan's nice and easy 35 may be a better starting point.

I think most of us blew through Umineko episodes pretty quickly back in the day. It's easy to get hooked on the story's presentation.

I tried this also. I attempted more than once to read through it. The problem is that so much of the screentime is devoted to this that it's impossible to ignore.

What I suspect I should really do is just skip straight to the Answer arcs tbh.

I don't know if you're saying that because of content of the Answer arcs themselves or if it's because I'll miss foreshadowing. If it's the latter though I will say that I already know most things about the story including what I guess most people would describe as the "main" twist"?

No, I love the Answer Arc. As someone who played the game purely for it's story and character content and made no attempt to "solve the mystery", I just can't abide by skipping content at all. You talking about skipping the answer arc to me is no different than saying you'll skip to Disk 3 of FFIX without playing the first 2, or start watching Breaking Bad on season 4. It's just a ridiculous idea, you don't skip narrative.

On a basic level, I just really don't separate the Question and Answer arcs into different things to begin with. Umineko has 8 episodes, period. You don't just skip some of them.

The Answer arc is when the storytelling is at its most pretentious (episode 8 especially), so if that's what you didn't like about it, then that's not for you.

I'm not exactly gonna sit here and say episode 8 is the creme of the crop, but I'll be damned if it didn't get the highest emotionally reaction out of me the largest number of times.

A scene early on had me weeping harder than I have at anything else in my entire life, legit. I was even having trouble breathing for a second!
