Think that's most of my list now? Fata Morgana was my +7, and I was one of the supporters for both Higurashi (+8) and Ever17 (+3).

Fata Morgana probably the most pleasantly surprised I've ever been by a game. It had (and still doesn't really have) basically no buzz whatsoever at the time of its release, which is very saddening to me. I only picked it up on whim because I was in a VN mood and saw a passionate tweet about it from the translator. I'm guessing the artstyle might doom the game since it doesn't seem like it would be that appealing to the visual novel fandom, but I don't really know. In any case it's very good.

Edit: No sorry, Fata Morgana was my +8 and Higurashi was my +7. I actually like Higurashi a bit more overall but I switched the order when just zero'ing in on the story.

It's amazing that Metal Gear Solid 2, as it was released, exists at all. The gaming industry hadn't yet become accustomed to Kojima being Kojima, so the idea that the follow-up to Metal Gear Solid 1, a gripping spy & conspiracy story starring the most badass game character in existence, would be a game that ratcheted the conspiracies up by 1000% and secretly replaced the protagonist in pre-release footage to hide the new one was not something ANYONE saw coming. Your mileage may vary on the result, but MGS2 has certainly carved out its niche among gaming for its themes on controlling people through information, crazy plot twists of the meta and non-meta variety, and the way it sometimes just goes ahead and fucks with your head. While some parts of it could have benefited from an editor, it was a game far ahead of its time that's more relevant now than it's ever been. Which...is kind of terrifying.

MGS3 is my favorite video game ever but I have to admit MGS2 was the right pick here. Going back to that story today and realizing it wasn't just smart but downright prophetic about how the world would look in a little over a decade is seriously incredible.

There's definitely a sliding scale of weebness

And MGS2 deserves a lot of credit for the foresight it has, but I think people just want to judge its story by the last hour or two rather than all the stuff that happened before that.

Final Fantasy being made by a Japanese developer has nothing to do with it being a 'weeb' thing or not. The term has mostly evolved into anime 'ayaya' stuff.

Not sure about the final one. Some possibilities off the top of my head:

Mainstream games - Baldur's Gate 2, God of War (2018), Silent Hill 2, Uncharted series ugh what else.
VNs, I think AA and Danganronpa are done. Maybe Higurashi? Although I'd expect it to be below Umineko. Zero Escape's just missing VLR, but maybe another Uchikoshi (one of the Infinites or AI) although top 10 seems a bit too high as well.
Indies - We have Edith Finch and Gone Home, but there's other possible walking simulators like Stanley Parable?

I guess we're also missing the David Cage games for what it's worth but I'm assuming and hoping we aren't going to get Heavy Rain into the top 10.

I mean I don't really see why any fan of "weeb games" can look at a list of the greatest game stories as recognized by this board, see one niche VN that was crowdfunded and another that has no console release outside of Japan both hit the top 20, and somehow be upset about that.

I mean yeah I wanted them higher, but come on. You can't beat pure mainstream popularity. VLR likely making the top 10 is more than I could have hoped for TBQH.

That said, I would be pretty upset about FFX being number 1 because I think that game is straight up bad and have never understood why people like it, particularly in the story and characters department (I don't like a single character in that cast). It's completely beyond me. Hell, it's literally the first JRPG I ever completed and was almost enough to turn me off of them entirely.

Hmmm, maybe you could make an argument for Utawarerumono also actually.

I wouldn't call most of the games that have appeared weeb games in the way I think you're saying though. (Which as I understand it would be something akin to Neptunia?)

FFX has an extremely well-realized world just in terms of how rich you can feel (and see!) its culture is. The story itself isn't super amazing though IMO and I might even argue its single most critical beat was done better in Tales of Symphonia of all things, but I would imagine the majority feels quite differently.

Hey, I loved DDLC! I'm not opposed to VN's for sure, although Umineko does make my eyes gloss over when anyone starts talking about it.

I'm mostly poking fun. 'Weebs' are an easy target to make fun of, but I myself appreciate the content, so if anything it's a little self-deprecating.

I agree that FFX doesn't deserve to win, and while it did end up on my list, it got a real low score. FFVII is a different story though, so I decided to poke fun after your comment.

I can definitely admit to the setting and art direction being incredibly impressive, I just wish there was a single character I liked in the cast or any story beats that compelled me all.

As for FFVII, I won't get into that because I quit after disk 1 because I wasn't invested, and was told at the time that it was the best disk by far. I did like the remake quite a bit, though!

I've been perpetually too afraid to play FFX-2 to completion because I need to get 100% completion on my first playthrough because that's just how I play games and taking a step in the wrong direction means I lose 0.1% somehow and it's bullshit.

I even tried following a guide step for step and somewhere along the way missed 0.1% and swore off the game forever after getting to CH3 for the 5th time.
